Two peaks -- one at 4am this morning and one at 12:30pm.
https://downdetector.sg/status/viewquest/

Indeed this looks like a pretty bad outrage, and those with Static IP and not using FreeDOM DNS are also affected.

https://www.straitstimes.com/tech/t...for-some-viewqwest-users-due-to-faulty-switch

Seems to be a faulty switch, which is odd since should have redundant links (and switches) especially if you're running an ISP

VQ has many smaller scale outrages which have never been up in national news outlets like The Straits Times. So this time it is considered big.

As for local ISP outrages, from the hind sight, you can say they were all unexpected and mostly preventable. However, things do happen. And in the case of VQ, if there are small outrages from time to time, there will be a big one sooner or later.

I need some advice on moving to another ISP, currently on VQ and contract ending in June this year. I am thinking of moving to another ISP but I am wondering whether there will be a downtime when switching. Usually how u guys switch? Is it to sign up to the new ISP and get them to turn on another fibre point first? Then cancel the existing one?

Most homes the fibre point socket guy 2 points as redundancy. Can activate one first then deactivate the other one.

Was previously with MR but noticed that the speed started getting a little iffy since the takeover by Starhub. Started thinking of signing up with Viewqwest since some time last year. Popped into this thread from time to time and noticed
very little activity, which to my uneducated opinion, means that there were no issues and things were predominantly fine - Stable, good speeds, no throttling. However, with the latest outage I see people also mentioning that they've had regular stability issues over time. I'm left wondering whether this is colored by the latest major outage incident OR is Viewqwest just not as stable as I had imagined.

So I gotta ask all long time subscribers to VQ, within the span of an average year using their service, how often would you say you experience outages that last longer an hour?

i think once a year? this thread only wake up whenever there is an outage :ROFLMAO:
their redeeming point is their tech support is reachable. you don't have to climb mountain and cross river to request for help on route optimisation

I been with them ten years liao, outage rate is as the activeness of this thread, sometimes the outrage happens when I'm at work so not affected but usually it gets resolved pretty fast. I'm also at the west, supposedly the more stable side it seems

So in general.. Despite the recent two day outage, existing subscribers would still recommend signing up. Is that so?

It is ok except for the following:
1. CGNAT if not subscribed to Static IP
2. Slow connection to China compared to other ISPs.
3. Fixed line requires additional $4.07 per mth.

I have been with VQ for 10 years already. Prior to 2020, there has been random outages. But since then, I hasn't had issue with it. For the recent outage, I was not affected as well.

Some of these setups (not identifying which ISP) are so ancient (with past legacies)...the problems are already there right from the start but has yet to be rectified till this very day. As stack and stack of network infrastructure piles up on top of it, worsening with admins turnover, it could just be constant fire fighting and waiting for a big outage to occur.

Sound like SingTel and Starhub to me if you talk about legacy like dual up, ADSL/Cables. Hahaha. :ROFLMAO:

But both are pretty stable. So looks like VQ then. :ROFLMAO:
