IIRC advance theory actually reminds drivers to slow down and let the overtaking car go. So speeding up as a defensive manuver against lane change is ridiculous. It’s an unsafe and IMO asshole behavior.

Yup, and if you got take defensive driving course before, the no.1 mantra is to ALWAYS SLOW DOWN if a situation arises.
The fella I am replying to damm champion, say speeding up to close gap to prevent others from abrupt lane change is a type of defensive maneuver lol!
I lazy to argue with him, but for him to close the gap, Only two situation will allow that to happen,
1) it's either during slow traffic where he can get closer to the front car, Got a sizable gap in front he chiong to close it so people can't filter in.
2) or when he's tailgating other vehicles on the road at normal or fast speed.
