actually what happens if the surgeon suddenly needs to sneeze when performing a sensitive procedure?
or if he's not fully alert because didn't sleep well the previous night?
There are other assisting surgeons for a major surgery, I believe. We can come up with 1001 outlier reasons: what if the surgeon himself has a stroke during the surgery etc.....if everyone thinks like this, no need to go for any surgery.

Every operation have a risk.
Patient refuses to do.
Like my mum, Drs ask her to go for neck operation cause she has severe blockage . If stroke hits her, it would be immediately fatal. She just refuses to do. Counting down for her time

Might be right also.
Many unheard cases. Go in alive . Lay flat out

Why not seek a second or even a third opinion whereby a specialist can give you his/her frank opinion of how long your condition can last if you don't go for surgery?

My late dad had a bypass surgery at around 58 yo that lasted him for about 10 years before he passed.

Throughout those years I accompanied him to SGH Heart Centre for check ups.

Nearer to the end of the 10 years, the specialist began to give me warning of his heart was beginning to fail again and gave me an approximate timeline to prepare for his passing.

*We were lucky coz dad was under the care of the same specialist throughout the 10 years and we sort of know him well. He spoke to me in English that my dad couldn't understand (not to cause unnecessary alarm) and was willing to share with me his prognosis. He was accurate in a way.

If the second opinion tells you that your heart may last for another 10 years without surgery and you are OK with that, then so be it that you may decide against surgery. Having more info at hands to make your decision is wiser in a way.
Private check up very expensive but think result is the same need go through surgery.

When they set appointment want check more detail on my heart use transesophageal echocardiogram.

I am on hold need use scope go through your mouth to check heart...:(I cancel and told them not mentally prepare go surgery.

Yes it is important to do a CT scan or MRI for heart past 40. It can show blockage. At that age, more or less got blockage already. Last time my ECG also normal but in the end also cannot detect heart defect. I feel those one time ECG mostly is hao hsiao one, need to wear those that constantly monitor then can detect heart problems. If need to op, better to do when young, recovery is easier.

Had my open heart surgery for mitral valve replacement a month ago. Recovering now. Doc said I have 1 year to get it replaced before risk of failure is too high.

Had the valve repaired 11 years ago but because of viral infection and endocarditis in Nov last year, repair was totally damaged.

Listen to the docs advise. If you need to go for surgery, get it done quickly. We have the best surgeons here.
Hospital matters also. Choose wisely

A detailed heart screening entails the below:

Advice from specialists may or may not be the same. Some like $$$ or wanna clock KPI and so more inclined towards surgery but others may give more logical advice (which is the purpose of second opinion to see whether the first one is 'bluffing' or not).

Sad case.....this week , a friend passed away.
Only 43 , married with 3 kids.
Got to know that deceased was diagnosed with leaking valve in heart. But refused to go for operation as he worried complications of operation. After sending all kids to school, not long after he just collapsed and passed on.

I read up more about valve leaking. This would lead to cardiac arrest.

wtf? got leaking valve is no joke

likely also bui bui at that age with kids, is just waiting to drop into coffin

Maybe I will go check up again.

My brother did this via the mouth to check for clots. This was a few months after his open heart surgery. Complicated story. All turns out well. Today he has decided to fully retire, exercises and cooks his own meals as much as possible.

I cannot exercise bcos can feel heart valve weak and easily tiring.

I took redbull sometimes and help me gain more energy on my heart.
Did your cardiologist say you cannot exercise? If that bad, wouldn't he ask you to go for surgery?

Family: three siblings went for open heart bypass surgeries. Two went for stent procedures including myself. All survived. The first one who did the surgery has survived seven years.

Another sibling: stroke due to severe Afib. Didn't do surgery despite doctor's advice. Passed away suddenly last year.

If anyone experience symptoms, better do CT scan for heart . Sometimes ECG can't check much. I myself knew I have mild issue in my valve issue but ECG always showed reading ok. But chest always feel tight whenever i run . Last time during school days, couldn complete 2.4km as chest in tight n breathless. pE teach always forced me to run and my chest felt even tighter. Now I knew the reason why after consulting a cardiologist
moi did echo scan. Found one side of pump weaker than the other. But doctor say no need follow up. Should i be worried :frown:
