Ahead of the radical departure that is the Google TV Streamer, the next Chromecast with Google TV update (June 2024) is rolling out.

The STTL.240508.005 (from STTE.240315.002) update for the Chromecast with Google TV brings the Android security patch level to June 2024 (from Apr 2024). It is not yet reflected in the changelog.

Today’s 71.94 MB update is on the smaller end, with “Other bug fixes and performance improvements” mentioned.

This marks the fifth Chromecast with Google TV update in eight months — February, March, April, May, and August with Google already outpacing the 2023 cadence: January, April, May, July, October, and December.

The first update of the year brought Fast Pair and the Audio output switcher in Quick Settings. The big update we’re waiting for will add a “Home runtime.”, thus allowing the Chromecast with Google TV to act as a hub for Matter devices. It’s officially coming later this year.

On your Chromecast with Google TV, go to Settings > System > About > System update.

As we first reported last month, the long-awaited replacement for the Chromecast with Google TV is the “Google TV Streamer,” a set-top box. According to a new report, the Google TV Streamer 4K will cost roughly twice as much as Chromecast, at least in Europe.

Google launched the Chromecast with Google TV back in 2020 to solid reception, but storage woes and a lack of powerful hardware led to some long-term complaints. As we recently brought out, though, software updates and other tweaks over time left the Chromecast to age better than many expected.

But now, a new option is on the horizon, and it looks like a big improvement.

The “Google TV Streamer” that we first reported in July is a new set-top box that has an upgraded remote and more. But how much will it cost?

Dealabs reports that the Google TV Streamer will cost €119.99 in Europe.

The release of Google TV Streamer in Europe is also mentioned to solely include a “Porcelain” color variant. The device is also set to include an Ethernet port and support for Thread radio (for smart home devices).

With an announcement seemingly imminent, let us know in the comments below what you’re looking forward to with this new device.

Google on the 11-year history of Chromecast as the lineup comes to an end

Original first-generation 2013 Chromecast updates

The Chromecast line is going off into the sunset, with the iconic series now being replaced by the Google TV Streamer. In a post, Google reflects on the 11-year history of the Chromecast lineup.

Google unveiled the first Chromecast back in 2013 as a dead-simple streaming dongle that supported streaming from apps on your phone or tablet with the click of a button. It didn’t have a remote or really any software to speak of, leading to a very simple experience on the whole. And it was a massive hit.

Over 11 years and a few generations, Google says it has sold over 100 million devices.

That started, of course, with the first-generation Chromecast.

As Google explains:
This tiny device brought the experience of casting content from your phone to the biggest screen in your house. Chromecast (1st Gen) was a small, portable stick that plugged right into the HDMI port of your TV. You could then use your phone, tablet or computer to wirelessly cast content from apps like YouTube.

Two years later, Google followed up with the Chromecast (2nd Gen) which offered an updated, more flexible design that worked better with more TV designs. It also had upgraded hardware and some flashy new colors. Perhaps our favorite bit was the clever magnetic attachment point the HDMI cable which made the dongle easy to pack away on a trip.

The second-generation Chromecast had a new dongle design, plus new color options (yellow and red, in addition to black). Switching to a dongle made it easier to tuck Chromecast behind your TV. And with a magnetized back and HDMI plug, it attached perfectly to TVs and wall mounts.

But 2015 wasn’t just about that single Chromecast. That same year also saw the arrival of the Chromecast Audio, a clever little device that could turn a traditional speaker into a connected one. It still works down to today, and nothing has even really replaced what the Chromecast Audio did.

We launched Chromecast Audio, a streaming music player, which could plug directly into speakers or home theater systems for easy audio streaming. It transformed any speaker into a modern streaming audio system. It also featured a headphone jack and grooved design to resemble a vinyl record.

In 2016, Google finally ackowledged that 4K TVs were ubiquitous and launched the Chromecast Ultra, a much more powerful streaming dongle that could handle 4K output, Dolby Vision HDR, and more. It was also later used to bring Google Stadia to the TV. But this was also around the time when users started to want more out of the Chromecast, especially as Google’s device was now lacking a remote and software while competitors such as Amazon were pushing forward with new ideas.

Chromecast Ultra was the first Chromecast device to provide 4K streaming and an ethernet port for uninterrupted viewing. It was also the first to support Dolby Vision.

2018 saw the last “real” Chromecast, with the third-generation device offering a handful of improvements to what it could do, but was starting to feel the pressure of customers wanting a device that worked without their phone.

The third-generation of Chromecast leveled up with smoother playback support and 15% faster speeds than its predecessor. We also added support for Dolby Digital Plus and fully integrated Chromecast with Nest smart speakers, so you could control your TV with a quick “Hey Google.”

In 2020, Google finally answered that call with the Chromecast with Google TV (4K), an Android-based streaming dongle that also delivered on what Google says was its biggest customer request, a voice remote.

Chromecast with Google TV (4K) came onto the scene to organize all your entertainment in one place with tailored recommendations, a personal watchlist and the ability to search across all your apps at once using your voice. We also introduced our most-requested feature: a voice remote.

Finally, in 2022, what is now the final Chromecast release was the Chromecast with Google TV (HD), which brought the best parts of the 4K model down to an even lower price than the original 2013 Chromecast could deliver.

We launched Chromecast with Google TV (HD), built with affordability in mind, to bring the Google TV experience — including access to over 10,000 apps in 1080p — to even more people.

As we covered yesterday, Google is not just immediately killing off the Chromecast. Updates and support will continue, but production has come to an end. Existing stock will continue to be sold until it is no longer available and there won’t be another Chromecast coming afterwards.

Google’s reasoning for this shift to the Google TV Streamer is effectively just that times have changed. When Chromecast was first introduced, smart TVs were rare, so getting your TV connected with a $35 dongle had a huge impact. Even back in 2020, when Chromecast with Google TV was announced, there was still plenty of demand for such a product. But nowadays, smart TVs are getting better. The tech that Chromecast added to a TV – Cast and, more recently, Google TV – are already built into millions of TV sets. As such, the need for dedicated streaming devices has shifted from very basic, low-power devices, to more advanced and capable options, like the more-powerful Google TV Streamer.

With its high price and big physical size, I still cannot understand the proposition of this new streamer and how it can value add to my existing setup. I have a smart tv at home that can stream shows i want to watch. I don't have other smart devices at home since they are very costly to replace all my current setup like aircon, lightings, doors.

I only got one 4k chromecast which i plug to my old TV. Actually i don't quite like my lg tv interface which is a bit slow to use. I was hoping chromecast will have a better model than my existing 4k model as an upgrade, but then it is big, and need to find somewhere to place it. Think will give it a miss.

I have both 4k chromecast and nvidia shield pro.

i think 2024 edition maybe an alternative to nvidia shield pro. the reason I get shield pro is due to streaming bluray over wifi not as stable as LAN.

I don't think so. unless all TV manufacturer adopt Android TV, else, I think those boxes still cater to certain use cases which may not due to those illegal apps.

for me, I stream from my NAS via LAN at home. I bring along for my travel and can access my NAS. so, such device still have some usefulness.

TL;DR
  • A Google product manager told us that the company plans to eventually bring Android 14 to the Chromecast with Google TV.
  • However, we weren’t told when the update will roll out.
  • Don’t expect Thread support to be added in the update, though, as it requires new hardware.

Google may have killed it, but the Chromecast with Google TV will still get Android TV 14

Even though eventually the Chromecast with Google TV will get Android 14, it won’t get every new feature.

Although this week’s Made by Google event was all about the new Pixel devices, Google’s new Nest hardware was also on display at the event. That includes the new Google TV Streamer, Google’s latest TV streaming box that’s replacing the Chromecast. While the Chromecast with Google TV has been discontinued, Google will still be providing software updates for it, and Android Authority has learned that this will include an update to Android 14.

On the sidelines of the Made by Google event, we had the opportunity to speak to several Google TV product managers about the new Google TV Streamer. Since the Google TV Streamer is the first device in the US to run Android 14 for TVs, we had a lot of questions about the new software release. Specifically, we wanted to know whether there are any features in Android TV 14, which is how many people refer to the Android 14 for TV release, that won’t be available on other devices that receive the update.

Google TV Streamer

The answer is yes: not every new feature in Android TV 14 will be available on other devices. An example they gave is the new Thread network stack that allows TVs to act as Thread border routers. Most existing devices don’t have a Thread radio, so even if they do upgrade to Android 14 for TV, they obviously won’t be able to act as a Thread border router.

A Google TV product manager we spoke to specifically highlighted how this would be the case for the Chromecast with Google TV. They said that even though eventually the team is going to upgrade the Chromecast with Google TV to Android 14, it won’t have the same Thread functionality as the new Google TV Streamer because it lacks the hardware.

Chromecast with Google TV HD with all included accessories

Google bringing Android 14 to the Chromecast with Google TV shouldn’t really be surprising, given that the company pledged to continue providing software and security updates when they announced they were killing off the Chromecast brand. In fact, the Chromecast with Google TV (4K) is still slated to receive security updates until the end of September 2025, whereas the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) is slated to receive updates until the end of September 2027.

The original Chromecast with Google TV (4K) shipped with Android TV 10 and later received an update to Android TV 12, whereas the HD model shipped with Android TV 12 out of the box. Android TV 14 would thus represent the second major OS upgrade for the 4K model and the first major upgrade for the HD model.

Ahead of the Google TV Streamer launching later this month, the next Chromecast with Google TV update (July 2024) is rolling out. While Google is no longer manufacturing new dongles, they will remain on sale until inventory runs out, while software updates continue.

The STTE.240615.007 (from STTL.240508.005) update for the Chromecast with Google TV brings the Android security patch level to July 2024 (from June 2024). Still Android 12, it is not yet reflected in Google’s changelog.

At 143 MB, it’s bigger than the last 71.94 MB update just over a month ago. There are “Other bug fixes and performance improvements” once again.

This is the sixth Chromecast with Google TV update in nine months — February, March, April, May, August, and September, with Google already meeting the 2023 rollout: January, April, May, July, October, and December.

A big update later this year will bring Android 14 and a “Home runtime” that will allow the Chromecast with Google TV to act as a hub for Matter devices.

On your Chromecast with Google TV, go to Settings > System > About > System update.

No worry if your LG TV is on a LG TV stand. There is a tiny space under the TV so you can put the box under or behind the TV. The signal from the remote will flow normally as there is a tiny space between the TV and the TV console. I also using LG TV in my bedroom with a TV box below the TV.
