Following the launch of the Google TV Streamer last month, the next Chromecast with Google TV update (September 2024) is rolling out.

The STTL.240812.006 (from STTE.240615.007) update for the Chromecast with Google TV brings the Android security patch level to September 2024 (from July 2024). This is still Android 12 and not yet reflected in the Google changelog.

At 83.01 MB, it’s smaller than the 143 MB update less than a month ago. As always, there are “Other bug fixes and performance improvements.”

This is the seventh Chromecast with Google TV update in ten months — February, March, April, May, August, September, and October, with Google surpassing the 2023 rollout: January, April, May, July, October, and December.

As of this update, we’re not yet seeing Home Control in Quick Settings.

We’re hopefully close to the big update this year that will bring Android 14 and a “Home runtime” that will allow the Chromecast with Google TV to act as a hub for Matter devices.

On your Chromecast with Google TV, go to Settings > System > About > System update.

TL;DR
  • Google is making the new Home experience, which came with the Google TV Streamer, available to the older Chromecast with Google TV.
  • For now, you’ll need to be in a limited-access Public Preview program to see it.
  • Once in, the service appears to work much like it does on the Google TV Streamer.

When Google launched its first set-top box streaming device — the Google TV Streamer — it simultaneously announced a new feature within Google TV: the ability to access a flyout Google Home app. Using this app, you can perform smart home actions, like turning on your lights, checking your cameras, or changing your home’s temperature.

Now, Google is rolling out the Home experience to its older streaming device, the Chromecast with Google TV (via 9to5Google). However, to use it today, you’ll need to take part in a Public Preview program, which might be a bit of a hassle for some. Still, the feature coming to Public Preview means that those of you who don’t want to join will likely get the feature quite soon, once Google irons out any bugs.

Although we haven’t been able to test it ourselves, the Google Home experience on the older Chromecast devices appears to look and work just like it does on the Google TV Streamer. You navigate to the Quick Settings panel by holding down the Home button and then click the Google Home tile there. This brings out a new flyout sidebar with tiles for most of your smart home devices. I say “most of” because the service can only control lights, thermostats, locks, cameras, plugs, vacuums, other TVs, and speakers.

To join the Public Preview, you’ll need to meet a few requirements:
  • You need to be an owner or member of a Home in the Google Home app to which your Google TV profile is connected, and this profile must not be a Kids profile.
  • Your Google TV device must be in standard mode (not apps-only, or basic mode).
  • You need to opt in to the home panel on your Google TV.
  • There must be at least one smart home device aside from your Google TV in your Home.
To get started, fire up the Google Home app on your Android or iOS device, head to the Settings tab, and scroll down to find the Public Preview option.

Guys, what should be the criteria to choose Chromecast or Google TV Streamer or any other equivalent device?

Following the first Google TV Streamer patch last week, a new Chromecast with Google TV update is rolling out.

The STTL.240812.006.N1 (from STTL.240812.006) update for the Chromecast with Google TV keeps the Android security patch level at September 2024. This is still Android 12 and not yet reflected in the Google changelog.

At 59.48 MB, it’s smaller than the 83.01 MB update in October. There are just “Other bug fixes and performance improvements.”

It is the eight Chromecast with Google TV update in 11 months — February, March, April, May, August, September, October, and November, with 2023 only seeing six patches.

This release could be rolling out ahead of the big Android 14 update that adds a “Home runtime” to allow the Chromecast with Google TV to serve as a hub for Matter devices. Google still has a few weeks to deliver.

On your Chromecast with Google TV, go to Settings > System > About > System update.

Last year, Google released eight updates for its streaming dongles. The first Chromecast with Google TV update of 2025 is now rolling out, with Android 14 not yet here.

The STTL.241013.003 (from STTL.240812.006.N1) update for the Chromecast with Google TV bumps the Android security patch level to November (from September) 2024. This is still Android 12 and not yet reflected in Google’s changelog.

At 72.25 MB, it’s larger than the 59.48 MB update in November. There are just “Other bug fixes and performance improvements.”

In 2024, Google released eight Chromecast with Google TV updates: February, March, April, May, August, September, October, and November. 2023 only saw six patches.

We’re still waiting for the big Android 14 release, which will add a “Home runtime” to allow the Chromecast with Google TV to serve as a hub for your Matter smart home devices.

On your Chromecast with Google TV, go to Settings > System > About > System update to get the first release of 2025.

A bug with Ambient Mode on Cast-powered Chromecasts drastically shrinks the time and weather that’s displayed in the bottom-right corner.

Over the past few days, owners of non-Google TV Chromecasts have noticed that the weather and clock have drastically shrunk, with the latter being smaller than the former. The temperature, condition icon, and time are now about the same size as the text for the image credits/details below it.

As such, it’s quite hard to make out from a distance, thus defeating a key aspect of why people keep their televisions on throughout the day. Other parts of the Ambient Mode UI look fine.

This was most likely caused by a server-side change rather than any firmware update. We’re seeing this issue on a 2nd-gen Chromecast, but presumably the 1st and 3rd gen, as well as the Ultra, are impacted by this bug.

Chromecast bug time weather

Playing around with Ambient Mode settings in the Google Home app does not fix anything. It’s a pretty widespread issue and clearly a bug, so hopefully Google will fix it in short order.

We don’t have this time and weather bug on the Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer.

Following the Chromecast with Google TV going out of stock last month, Google is finally rolling out the Android 14 update.

This update was originally expected by the end of 2024. UTTC.241218.004 is a big 809 MB download that takes your Chromecast with Google TV from Android 12 to Android 14.

The release notes highlight how “The Google TV Streamer Voice Remote supports Find My Remote and Customizable Button,” which presumably means that those that have bought the standalone accessory now get to benefit from the two new hardware features.

The security patch goes from November 2024 to January 2025, while there are also “System Stability and Improvements.”

It remains to be seen whether this is the last big OS upgrade for the Chromecast with Google TV. It should still get smaller updates going forward as Google is still supporting the dongles despite the discontinuation. In 2024, Google released eight Chromecast with Google TV updates. We’re up to two in 2025.

On your Chromecast with Google TV, go to Settings > System > About > System update to get the Android 14 update.

Summary

  • Android 14 update for Chromecast with Google TV causing reported issues.
  • Post-update problems include glitchy sound, visuals, USB accessory recognition.
  • Factory reset may help if experiencing issues after updating to Android 14.

Yesterday, the Chromecast with Google TV started getting a major update: Android 14 is rolling out to Google's last-gen TV streaming dongle. The update's not quite going off with, though. As spotted by 9to5Google, there have been several reports of buggy behavior following the update: there have been reported issues with accessories, glitchy sound and visuals, and more.

9to5 notes that reports haven't been too widespread, but there are quite a few mentions of post-update issues floating around on Reddit. Many issues seem to be cropping up around USB accessories. One user mentions their Google TV Streamer can no longer access their external storage device; another says that the Ethernet adapter they'd been using is no longer recognized and that they can no longer access USB debugging. 9to5 also mentions a commenter on their own site who says they've started receiving a low power warning when using a USB hub.

A fourth user reports their unit is no longer outputting sound and that their settings menu is behaving erratically. Yet another says their Chromecast's color profile seems to have changed after the update; another commenter suggests that particular issue may be related to HDR settings.

Issues aren't universal, but they're numerous

Again, these reports are coming from a handful of users who've downloaded Android 14 on their Chromecast with Google TV devices, so it doesn't seem like issues are universal. Still, something in the update does seem to be going awry more often than we'd expect. If you're experiencing issues after updating your Chromecast with Google TV to Android 14, some users say that a factory reset might help sort you out.

This all comes on the heels of some issues with older Chromecast models — the pre-Google TV kind — that more or less bricked some devices. Google says it's rolled out a fix for that issue, though.

The Chromecast with Google TV got its Android 14 update earlier this year as promised, but Google quietly pulled that update from production and, three months later, we’re still waiting on it.

The update situation around Chromecast with Google TV was quite messy for a long time, but the device managed to get two major Android OS updates over its lifetime, the first being Android 12 back in 2022, and the second being Android 14 in March of this year.

Quickly after the Android 14 update rolled out, though, it was abundantly clear that it was riddled with issues.

At that point, Google quietly paused the rollout, with new users unable to download and install the update. Anyone who has already installed it is still able to continue using it, of course, but checking for updates no longer shows Android 14 as available to Chromecast with Google TV. The newer update carried the version number UTTC.241218.004, while Google still lists STTL.241013.003 as the latest available version.

This is likely the best decision for the sake of the experience on Chromecast devices, as Android OS updates typically don’t bring many user-facing changes. But the timeline here is what is surprising. After three months, one would expect the update to be available again. Google hasn’t communicated anything about the removal either, leading to some confusion around the update.

In our experience, the update works, but it is full of frustrating issues such as crashing apps. Users have also reported that external devices (including storage) no longer work, Wi-Fi sometimes doesn’t connect, and more.

Meanwhile, Walmart is currently rolling out the Android 14 update for its Google TV box, Onn 4K Pro, joining the Google TV Streamer as one of the only devices running the latest version. Android 16 for TVs was announced at Google I/O last month, and it’s hard to imagine that the Chromecast will ever see that update.

Back in March, Android 14 for the Chromecast with Google TV started rolling out after missing it’s expected 2024 deadline. There were some issues and Google pulled the OTA. A new Android 14 update for the Chromecast is now rolling out.

UTTC.241218.008.H1.13427172 (versus UTTC.241218.004) is rolling out to both those that installed the initial Android 14 update (small patch) and Chromecast with Google TV devices still on Android 12 (large download). It remains on the January 2025 security patch.

This software update includes:
  • Upgrade Android TV version from 12 to 14
  • The Google TV Streamer Voice Remote supports Find My Remote and Customizable Button
  • Security Patch Updates to January 2025
  • System Stability and Improvements

Initial user reports note a fix for not being able to use external drives/storage and a fix for Settings crashing in certain menus. There are reports of Ethernet adapters and USB debugging/ADB still not working after this patch.

On your Chromecast with Google TV, go to Settings > System > About > System update to get this new Android 14 update.
