thanks for the advice.
Currently using a pair of XD6 for my whole house which work without any issue.
So if signing for 3gbps plan, since the BE230 is free. thinking to make use of it , so my phone and some other electronic device can connect to the BE230 WIFI for speed faster than 1GB.
The XD6 will then be just for all the smarthome device will do, since they dont need to be fast, just need constant connection.
Yes , so it works. I also tried to ask chatGPT and it told me to disable DHCP and set to AP mode for the XD6.
I actually just test my Smart TV, using netflix connection test, only 100Mbps! should i use WIFI instead of LAN then, for Smart TV? As I google my LG OLED TV by right should be able to go 2.5G.

But honestly even at 100mbps, not slow or lag in streaming.

If you can use wired connection, 100Mbps is good enough for smart TV.

BTW, I do not think any smart TVs will have built-in 2.5Gbe wired networking. Most likely you use Google wrongly.

In fact Google "lg oled tv gigabit ethernet" shows all results that none of LG Smart TVs have gigabit Ethernet, all limited to 100 Mbps. Not so sure if there are any exceptions.

@xiaofan i'm coming from the Singtel 5gbps thread. let me share more about my situation here to hopefully get some of your advice.

My current MR plan is 1gbps and it's coming to the end of contract in few weeks time. Back in August, ST sale dropped by and I made impromptu decision signed up the 10gbps with 2x their lousy wifi6 routers. Just early this week I hearsay the lousiness of the routers, and with more consideration of the price, I decided to call up to ask for a change to a cheaper 5gbps option with just 1x the lousy router and intend to self purchase 2x good wifi7 routers for future proofing. Right now the ST sales guy is in process of helping me for the cancellation of my 10gbps order, to restart a new order for 5gbps.

And then I came to this forum learning all about these ONR/ONT thing, so now most likely I'm going to wait till he confirms my 10gbps order is cancelled, then I'll be telling him I do not intend to proceed further with a new contract with ST.

So question is, I've read up some info in this thread, M1 is out of question because not avail in my area. What's your suggestion? Call up to ask for recontract with MR for either the 3gbps or 10gbps plan? Or SH plan? I do realized that my existing 1gbps with MR also goes through a separate modem and then to my own router, so if I continue with MR, would I be similarly limited by the ONR like ST? Does it need to connect to a separate modem first before connecting to my own router?

Appreciate some advises. Thanks.

Since you have concerns of using ONR and you are going to buy high end mesh solution like TP-Link Deco BE85, indeed it is better to avoid Singtel.

As for which ISP to choose, please read the first page of this thread and see which one you like.

Personally I feel the best value is Starhub 5Gbps ONT offer at S$29.55 per month. It uses ONT so no limitation imposed by an ONR.

It is okay to go with MR if do not want the hassle of switching to another ISP. MR uses ONT as well.

Ok thanks. Yes its sufficient as usually it load no problem for 4k streaming. No point getting 1gb/2gb if 100mb more than enough for it to load smoothly. Will keep it to wired then.

thanks @xiaofan

Hi, I've read the updated "Recommendation for ISP Plans to Go" from this thread by xiaofan, much appreciated. 🙏

I've seen the comparisons between the fastest ISP? thread

Currently on M1 1Gbps Homepac and contract ending soon. Interested in XGSPON plans but not necessarily have to be 10Gbps

I understand about having Wifi7 or 10Gb devices for them to achieve these speeds:
  • Wifi7 routers with or without 6Ghz for wifi use
  • 10Gb switches
  • 10Gb NICs
  • ONU modules for SFP+ routers (SC/APC type) or switches

But I still can't decide which ISP with the lowest latency overall internationally, especially for gaming, streaming 4k and with many smart home cloud based devices.

I am not into gaming. But the usual way is to mention the games you are interested and ask in different ISP threads to see the response from the users. Depending on the locations of the gaming servers, it could be none of the ISPs are good.

As for the other two use cases, streaming 4k and with many smart home cloud based devices, I do not think any ISPs will have issues.

Basically your use cases do not really need higher bandwidth at all (1Gbps is more than enough), but it is much more difficult to get low latency compared to speed.

Almost all tvs (99%) in the market only have fast ethernet. The wifi on most tvs are alos just Wifi 5 AC which usually you can get higher than 100mbps though latency is higher and is not as stable.

The only way to get higher than 100mbps with low latency, is to get a 1gigbit usb dongle and connect to yr tv usb port. but some tvs do not support it (usually Android TV does, the rest maybe not and have to google and see others who tested on them). If the TV only has a USB 2.0 ports, you will get max 300mbps via ethernet.

The range of the BE230 probably wouldn't be as good as yr current Asus mesh...so depending on the placement of the BE230, you might still get faster speed connecting to yr Asus mesh.

but honestly you wouldn't see the difference in everyday use unless you do a speed test.

thanks for your comment. My Router is actually inside my DB box, which is a few steps away from the TV. But like I mentioned, even with 100mb wired connection, i got no issue streaming all the 4k content from netflix/youtube etc, hence mostly wont be bother with the WIFI anyway.

my current setup is XD6 x 2. If i got the BE230, it will be just be placed beside the current XD6 , and the other mesh XD6 will remain at its position(walkway to the rooms).

So maybe just phones and laptop will be connected to BE230 via WIFI, and if when in room connection drop, auto switch to connect the XD6 mesh?

rest of other all connection will not change. But I was wondering, with my planned set up, do i need to re-connect all my smart device or will it stay connected to my current XD6

I love my current home line number with SingTel.

But my contract is expiring soon. And unfortunately, they do not have any plans for recontract customers.

So, I’m thinking of signing up with other ISP. Any ISP allow me to retain my home line number? I know ViewQwest doesn’t. And it seems StarHub does, but requires a monthly home line fee that seems quite expensive, especially since I almost never uses the home line.

Any other recommendations?

Singtel does have recontract deals for existing customers. You can check out the first page of this thread. I collect special offer hidden links from Singtel and Starhub.

Singtel 2Gbps recontract (using Singtel GPON ONR) at S$37.90 per month.
https://www.singtel.com/personal/products-services/broadband/eform/recon-dm/fibre-2g

Singtel 5Gbps recontract (using Singtel XGS-PON ONR) at S$46.90 per month.
https://www.singtel.com/personal/products-services/broadband/eform/recon-dm/fibre-5g

If you want to switch to other ISPs, then it is better to switch to M1 (free digital voice) or Starhub (Digital voice is not free at S$2.14 per month). You can port the Singtel digital voice number to M1/Starhub without issues.

M1 can handle that. All M1 fibre Internet plans include fixed home line service at no additional charge, and number porting service is free. Plans start at $35.90 per month (1 Gb/s).

I m currently still using m1 500mbps plan (~$30.45), with huawei modem and TP-link deco mesh s4 router. I hv received promo offer from starhub for 5gbps $29.55/mth (2yr plan). I m thinking whether to switch coz at almost same price, i think its a good deal at higher internet speed.
Any comments?
Tho m1 comes with a fixed tel line, i can forego that.

Either way is fine.

If you are fine with your current M1 500Mbps plan (most users will be fine) and you do not want to spend more money on the home network, just keep using the M1 500 Mbps plan.

You may need to upgrade on the router and devices side to enjoy the higher bandwidth. 5Gbps/10Gbps capable wireless routers are not so cheap now, but Starhub got good offers of EB810v at S$360 and HB710 at S$192. On the devices side, it is also not so expensive to upgrade one device to be 10G capable. EB810v also has three 2.5G LAN ports, so you can upgrade some of your wired devices to 2.5Gbps capable as well if you do not think you need a 10G wired device. It is not expensive to upgrade Desktop/Laptop to have 2.5G network adapter.

If you have desire to improve on your home network and you are willing to spend a bit of money (say S$200 to S$600), just go ahead. You can always reuse your existing router and slowly upgrade the networking gears.

For the singtel 10gbps ONR, how do we bridge the port?

Wanted M1 but am still on the fence with singtel for stability and starhub for ONT. I think starhub has quite some connectivity issues despite offering ONT? But their 10gbps plan is cheaper than singtel. Singtel price is on the high side but I really don't like how ONR is not bridged. Is the singtel pro gamer plan any worth compared to the wifi 7 plans?

5Gbps Pro Gamer at $69.90/mth (U.P. $95.90/mth)
  • Comes with 1 unit of Asus RT-AX86U WiFi 6 Gaming Router
10Gbps Pro Gamer at $79/mth (U.P. $139/mth)
  • Comes with Asus GT AX11000 Router
10Gbps Enhanced (WiFi 7) at $69/mth (U.P $139/mth)
  • Comes with XGS-PON Optical Network Router + 1 unit TP-Link BE22000 WiFi 7 Router
10Gbps Enhanced Mesh (WiFi 7) at $79.80/mth (U.P $172.60/mth)
  • Comes with 2 units of TP-Link BE22000 WiFi 7 Router

Starhub is now stable. They have fixed the issue for sometimes (now got IPv6 issues but that is not a big problem).

If you do not like ONR, then go for Starhub or M1.

No guarantee that you can bridge the Singtel ZTE F8648P ONR, some users can and some users cannot. YMMV.

On a reliability basis, doesn't starhub also has downtime more frequently compared to singtel? I want to switch to M1. However, my area is not ready yet for 3gbps and above plans under M1.

Current router is AX86U

Would it be worthwhile to change to Starhub ONT $29.55 5gbps + $2.14 for fixed line if I plan to continue using AX86U for now since my devices don't support WIFI 7 anyway?

I ethernet cable (Cat 5e) from router to TV and PCs.

In terms of stability, no difference between M1 and Starhub.
Singtel > Starhub=M1.

Give and take. If you want to take a risk about the ONR bridging, go ahead with Singtel.

I was not able to bridge the Singtel ZTE F8648P ONR for about two months, but then suddenly I was able to bridge it.

Either way is okay, you can stay with M1 500Mbps and wait for M1 6Gbps plan to be avaiable in your area. You can also switch to Starhub 5Gbps ONT offer.

You can use RT-AX86U's 2.5G port as WAN port, wireless device can get higher than 1Gbps at near range, wired device will be limited to 1Gbps since RT-AX86U has only single 2.5G port.

I see, thanks for this. I really need to think the plans through. How's the status with MR 10gbps? Is it still having issues or resolved?
