With IC no and name, u can go print out details of home address, know your age, etc. Can also check your car details. Etc. With IC number, Can go check who is your wife at ROM, name and details. Can borrow $ from loanshark too.
Kidnapping scam will go up. Elderly might be wiser but now kidnapped know full name nric and address. Then how?

NEA officer come to your house with a fake photo id bearing a legit name and nric of a real NEA officer. He knows your name, address and nric and produces a letter bearing all the correct details and demand to be let in. You look at his warrant card. It’s fake but you don’t know it’s fake but you see the name and ic number of officer and call NEA to verify and they say officer is legit. Then how?

The idea is to make NRIC an useless data point for scammers.

Your masked NRIC is not safe, contrary to what many assumes.

Lucky draw winners may be announced with their name and masked NRIC. By obtaining the person's birth year, one can quite easily reverse engineer the full NRIC thanks to the checksum.
Yes, this is true. But shouldnt the G consider public opinion and educate the public prior to this hooha? This is yet another case of complete disregard of the common folks and why there should be more opposition in the parliament.

Our NRIC actually can tell a lot of things.
For example S9812345X

For babies born 1968 and after, last 5 digits 00000-5XXXX, it is ascending order based on date of registration for babies born in Singapore. So you can guess which month of the year a person is born based on birth stats of that particular year.

For 3rd digit starting with 7, these are all PRs and new citizens.

For 3rd digit starting with 9, this is rare and therefore not really known what is it actually for, could be Singaporean citizens born overseas to Singaporean parents who may have missed the normal deadline for registration.

For babies born 1967 and before S0xxxxxA and S1xxxxxxA, it is more random as it is based on when the person turn up for registration. But S2xxxxxxA are PRs and new citizens born 1967 and before.

Check digit generator easy to find online also.

So even just with the NRIC number itself you can already guess a person's age, birth month and whether they are native or naturalised.

Just because it becomes unmasked (again), please use common sense to protect it as it is still an important piece of information used to verify your identity to organisations
