Both the ONT and ONR special 5Gbps offer links are meant for the new users. However, existing users have been reported to be able to sign up and get waiver for the charges, either using the online link or go to the physical stores. If you go to the physical store, you may need to show them the online link since some of them may not know of the offer.

Take note for existing users, this is considered as a new sign-up and not a recontract. It is just that Starhub may make it like a recontract with the waivers.

BTW, I actually decided to keep the 500Mbps no-contract plan myself. Just lazy and it is good enough for the use case (not my main Internet plan).
Yeah think moi will do the same, seems a bit troublesome and current plan is good enough (moi just use for general web / netflix / YT anyway).

Nice setup! Have you tried running HB710 as wired backhaul?
Yes. I set it up as wired backhaul first. Then when I unplugged the LAN cable, it became wireless backhaul automatically. The HB710 does 2Gbps wireless backhaul (real world speed. Link speed is 2.8Gbps) with my BE230. It should do up to 4Gbps with another HB710.

The Deco X50 uses Deco Mesh, which is incompatible with Easy Mesh on the HB710 so you can never create a single mesh of the whole network. You might want to consider the $360 EB810v from Starhub, which has 1 10GbE LAN port and three 2.5GbE LAN ports. You can then run the X50 mesh off the EB810v's LAN ports until you decide to replace them with HB710s running Easy Mesh. Otherwise you won't get much benefit off the X50 satellites (other than going from M1 500mbps to 1Gbps) from the 5Gbps plan. Getting a HB710 and a switch is slightly cheaper, but if you do, get a 2.5GbE switch, which is not expensive. No point getting a 1GbE switch at this point.

There should be no issue running two separate Mesh networks as you upgrade slowly from Deco Mesh to Easy Mesh except that when you roam from Deco Mesh to Easy Mesh, you may face a sharp transition. For example, if you are on a WhatsApp video call while walking to another floor with a different mesh, it may cut off.

The ideal network for you is a Deco Mesh of three Deco BE85 routers, which will cost $2k or three ASUS BQ16, which will cost $2.5k. So getting three HB710s for $576 is a super bargain, since it will give you everything those expensive meshes have including 10Gbps backhaul. Thank you Starhub and TP-Link :D

I have a large Easy Mesh and it works extremely well. I cheaped out a bit and bought TP-Link BE230s from Carousell for $100. I also have one HB710.

Thanks for the advice.

I do have a 8 port 1g switch and multiple lan connections at each floor and a few deco x50s. Wifi coverage is actually adequate with min 300mbps everywhere. Just itchy hands wanna upgrade to 5gbps as price not different from M1 500mbps.

I guess an interim "cost effective" option is to upgrade to a 8port 2.5g switch and add a 2.5gb network card to my ryzen 5 5600 desktop. 10g switches and network adaptors are still super expensive. As for the wifi, can slowly upgrade the mesh devices either hb710 or be230s now, or much later when 10g mesh APs can be cheaper.

Frankly speaking, I can understand the shiokness of higher speed on desktop for torrenting but as for wifi ... any real difference btw 200mbps and 1.5g for streaming for mobiles and Tvs. haha.

I guess this situation applies to many existing home setups with decent wifi 5 devices.

Another option -- using XIaomi solution

1) Xiaomi BE10000 as main router, RMB 1599 (no 6GHz band)
https://www.mi.com/shop/buy/detail?product_id=18030

2) Xiaomi BE5000 as mesh node, RMB 279
https://www.mi.com/shop/buy/detail?product_id=19990

3) Xiaomi four-port 2.5G switch with two SFP+ ports as the main switch, RMB299 (or cheaper alternatives)
https://www.mi.com/shop/buy/detail?product_id=20072

4) Xiaomi 8-port gigabit switch, RMB 129
https://www.mi.com/shop/buy/detail?product_id=20073

5) Connection scheme
XGS-PON ONT in DB box --> patch panel Living room LAN port D2 --> Xiaomi BE10000 in living room (10G WAN port)
Xiaomi BE10000 SFP+ port --> future 10G capable wired device
Xiaomi BE10000 2.5G LAN port --> 2.5G capable wired device in living room
Xiaomi BE10000 2.5G LAN port --> Living room LAN port D3 --> patch panel in DB box --> Xiaomi 2.5G switch in DB Box --> patch panel --> other room LAN ports

Living room LAN port D1 --> cheap 1G switch like TP-Link TL-SG105 --> Smart TV and Gaming console
Main bedroom LAN port D6 --> Xiaomi BE5000 as mesh node
I'm reading through the whole post till here, having a question on the 5) connection scheme:

in my case, the Living room LAN port D2 and D3 are located on the wall facing each other, if I need to connect the LAN cable from the Xiaomi BE10000 2.5G LAN port --> Living room LAN port D3, the cable would have to be put on the floor in the living hall. Is there any better way to do it? Thanks

I don’t know your exact layout but typically both D2 and D3 will go back to the wiring closet. So to “connect” both of them you plug both into a switch in the wiring closet.

I am not so sure if you quote the full message, the above connection scheme is with either of the following two assumptions:

1) You have two LAN ports in the living room next to each other (often not the case for BTO flat)

2) You are willing to pull one extra cable.
A) from DB box to the one of the Living Room LAN port
B) from one Living Room LAN port to the other Living Room LAN port.

3) As for how to hide the Ethernet cable, you may have to discuss with the contractor and concerned family members.

This is basically the "Option 2" from the following FAQ.
How to put the main wireless router out of DB box in the central location and keep room LAN ports functional?

I called the sales hotline. The sales told me cannot port-in the existing number for new sign-up. May I know how do you convince them to do it?

I agreed to the new number initially as I thought that our home still had a second number for DV. I called up the next day to enquire about retaining the existing number and was told they could do it.

my existing number has finally been ported over. according to them they do it 24 hrs after termination of the old plan. the starhub shop CSO may not be aware of this when you return the old modem. so just get them to hold the termination until their backend does the transfer. May need to call 1630 to follow up.

I think yours is considered as recontact not new sign-up. For recontract, they can port over the existing digital voice number. The $29.55 plan is considered as new sign-up which they are not supposed to allow existing user to sign-up. For this case, they activate the 2nd TP port to allow existing user to sign-up.
Actually they also use another TP-Port to install my new plan also can transfer the number. See tomb's post at page 143. Actually possible to transfer the phone number to the new service. They wrote one number for life in their FAQ.

They cannot use back same port even when you recontract from 1Gbps to 5Gbps.

I try not to pay for devices at the moment because they are the ones that cost

That's why at first I ask for ONR but since the CS dun sell me ONR, then ONT I won't buy any devices also. Continue to use Linksys EA8100
