The 10% SG got slapped with is because of transhipping. The rationale is that a significant amont of goods are transhipped through Singapore by countries like China to evade tariffs. They are therefore slapping us with the friends and family rate of 10%. They will probably come round to us with a list of demands that plug what they feel are the loopholes that allow for tariff evasion. It is going to be a tough one whether we agree to this. If we do, it is going to blow a hole in a significant part of our economy.

A lot of people like to dismiss the Trump administration as buffons. When I see nuance like this, I tend to think that they have a really strong policy team that has been given blue sky.

10% is base universal tariff rate, no thought has gone into this, I think you give Trump way too much credit.

Israel got hit with 17% tariff even after they removed all US tariffs.

I am fairly sure we will get this lifted if we agree to their demands with regard to transhipment.

Actually I think this is quite true. A lot of China products are repackaged as SG products and sell

LPPL. Even he gives Singapore 50% tariff we also LPPL. Nothing much to say one la

Of course LPPL, but it doesnt mean that it is justified or reasonable. Reciprocal isnt reciprocal when the other party has little/no tariff on the US but gets hit by tariffs anyway, this is war.

But this isnt all that surprising, Trump has been demolishing US institutions and diminishing US soft power with lawless acts from day 1, this is just another day for him.

Didnt you read the WH interview with USTR? They are only interested in generating a trade surplus and they think the only way they can achieve this is via tariffs. It has nothing to do with China or transhipments.

This came out in Fox News from Stephen Miran who was explaining the reason for the across the board 10%. He is the current chair of the Council of Economic Advisers.

This is the kind of retards thats working for Trump now. He literally says that 10% is a base rate (base meaning it cant go lower than that) then he goes on to contradict himself by saying its about transhipments.

SG should have been hit with far larger tariffs if it was truly about transhipments because China is one of our largest trading partner, but we were only hit with 10% because the US has a trade surplus with SG.

USTR explained how they derived at the different tariff rates and I suggest you go read that interview.

Its all about trade imbalance, doesnt matter where or how that trade imbalance came about. This is why Trump is putting tariffs on even their closest allies like Israel.

We have a strategic relationship with them. They are putting us on notice. Now that this has been announced, we are a natural backdoor for those wishing to evade tariffs. If we allow ourselves to be used, I am sure the 10% can be increased.

The transhipments part is what caught my attention. I think he was being loose lipped and revealed something not meant for the public domain.

There wont be any increase as long as we have a trade deficit with the US. Mark my words. This is about trade imbalance, has nothing to do with transhipments or China.

I think that guy is trying to explain why there is a 10% baseline tax on all other countries like SG that has trade surplus….
So conveniently use Transhipping as a reason(excuse)

We have a trade deficit with the US, not surplus. We should be running massive surpluses with the US e.g Vietnam if transhipment was really a thing.

SG shd be safe because our exports to USA is peanuts. (About 1% of their total import)
