Singapore’s political system designed to host an opposition presence that works in the country’s interest: WP chief Pritam Singh

Singapore’s political system ensures that politics remains contestable, and allows Singaporeans of all stripes to organise and participate in politics, said Mr Pritam Singh in a message, as WP unveiled its manifesto today.

“Critically, Singapore’s political system is designed to host an opposition presence in Parliament – a loyal opposition – that works in the interests of the country. To reiterate: this is by design,” he says.

A loyal opposition exists to remind us that any Singaporean can legitimately host a different view to the PAP, he says, adding that there is nothing wrong or disloyal about that.

He adds that the most important thing is that those alternative views and different ideas seek better outcomes for Singapore and Singaporeans.

“This is the driving force behind the Workers’ Party’s General Election 2025 slogan – Working for Singapore,” says Mr Singh.

WP manifesto contains 125 policy proposals across 5 key areas

At the press conference, Aljunied GRC MP Gerald Giam introduced the WP manifesto, which covers 125 policy proposals across 5 key areas.

The first is on measures to target affordability and cost of living concerns. The party called for an alternative to GST to generate tax revenue, proposals to improve affordability of utilities, housing and care, and additional support for workers facing job insecurity.

The second covers economic growth and opportunity, where they highlighted the need for Singaporean workers to form the core of the economy and clear measurement metrics to promote reskilling and reemployment. They also called for better competitiveness for future industries, SMEs, as well as a reform of the CPF system.

The third addresses inclusion and equality, where they put forward suggestions for alleviating poverty, enhancing support for parents and caregivers and addressing the needs of an ageing population.

In the fourth, they called for greater levels of accountability and democracy, such as having independent institutional safeguards with the power to check and balance those in power and electoral reform.

The final section covers security and geopolitics, including proposals for strengthening external and internal resilience. Aside from defence policies, uch as greater countermeasures against grey zone tactics and higher pay for full-time NSMen, the WP also highlighted the need to enhance Singapore’s internal supply chain resilience.
