Four-cornered fight in Tampines GRC

NSP and PPP have filed their nomination papers for Tampines GRC.

PPP’s line-up comprises party chief Goh Meng Seng, Derrick Sim, Vere Nathan, Peter Soh and Arbaah Haroun.

NSP’s slate, meanwhile, is made up Reno Fong, Mohd Ridzwan Mohammad, Zee Phay, Thamilselvan Karuppayya and Eugene Yeo.

This means Tampines GRC is set for a four-cornered fight, with WP also contesting the constituency.

It is 12 noon and the deadline for nominations have closed. Here are five surprises and takeaways so far.

• DPM Gan Kim Yong was not part of PAP’s Chua Chu Kang GRC team and was seen at the nomination centre for Punggol GRC.
• Minister for Manpower Tan See Leng moved from Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC and will contest the election in Chua Chu Kang GRC.
• Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC is set for a walkover after no WP candidate turned up.
• Faisal Manap, incumbent Aljunied GRC MP, will contest in Tampines GRC instead.
• Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean is not contesting this GE.

WP's strategy for GE2025

The WP appears to have made a calculation that its best chances for electoral victory lie in fielding strong teams in Punggol GRC and Tampines GRC, instead of Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC.

The WP has contested in Marine Parade since the 2015 General Election.

This time, instead of fielding a team there - as some political pundits expected - it is diverting its firepower to Punggol and Tampines instead.

The party chose to field senior counsel Harpreet Singh Nehal in its Punggol slate and Dr Ong Lue Ping, a senior principal clinical psychologist, in its Tampines team.

One possible reason the WP has chosen not to field a team in Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC, could be due to electoral boundary changes announced in March.
Those changes saw MacPherson SMC absorbed into the new Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC.

In GE2020, the PAP polled strongly in MacPherson, with 71.74 per cent voting for Ms Tin Pei Ling.
