Mag 4 is peanuts. I'd be worried if there were a mag 5 or more. 5 is 10x more powerful for frame of reference.

Not peanuts. Did chiu see the bideo?

Some of the older flats I see, the facade already crumbling, ceiling cement coming off and leaking, even with no earthquake. If shake like this, building cannot stay already, even if no collapse. Need major overhaul 1 year, everyone need to move out in the time being. Those WW2 shophouses, don't know how many will collapse even with Mag 4.

It is peanuts. Cosmetic damage. Our definition is probably a bit different. But not like GCT wife peanut.
The video shake because the poorly mounted CCTV was jumping around.

You probably need to look into the definition of Mag 4 a bit more. Your concerns would definitely be more valid in the event of a Mag 5, maybe 5.5.

Johor very near to singapore 😱

What about Singapore?

In a written reply to a parliamentary question posed by retired Member of Parliament Dr Lim Wee Kiak in 2015, then-Environment and Water Resources Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan said that the likelihood of an earthquake occurring in Singapore is "extremely low".

"Most earthquakes tend to occur at the active margins of tectonic plates, such as in Sumatra, Java, the Philippines, Japan and South America.

"Singapore is situated about 400km from the nearest plate margin. The crust underlying Singapore is considered stable by experts in geology, and the records from our seismic stations and global positioning instruments show no evidence of active faults within Singapore," said Dr Balakrishnan.

On the frequently asked questions section of its website, the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) echoed this, but cautioned that big earthquakes occurring on the nearest plate boundary — the Sunda Megathrust, offshore Sumatra — may affect Singapore.

"An earthquake powerful enough could swing the buildings located over reclaimed land or sediments," said the EOS.

In a 2023 updated posted on its website, Singapore's Building and Construction Authority said that buildings in Singapore are designed to be sufficiently robust to withstand tremors caused by distant earthquakes.

This is enshrined in the Singapore Standards — Design of Structures for Earthquake Resistance — which follows European standards.

On Feb 25, 2022, Singapore experienced tremors when a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the western coast of Sumatra.

Writing for The Straits Times in 2022, senior research fellow at the National Technological University, Dr Karen Lythogoe, said that more research is needed to assess the activity of geological faults and seismic hazard in Singapore and the neighbouring regions.

Recently gov just say they will warn residents when emergency via sms right?
Then so fast JB quake. Wonder if they detected something beforehand.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is developing the system to provide faster, more precise alerts during crises.

"At present, we rely on telco companies to send SMS alerts but there are limitations. "Messages to large numbers of people must be queued in the telco system, which can cause delays," said the Kulai MP after presenting aid to SPM and STPM high achievers at Dewan Terbuka Jalan Merbuk in Bandar Putra on Sunday (Aug 24).

She added that the system would allow the MCMC to send location-based push notifications directly to mobile devices.

"If the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) issues an alert for a particular area, MCMC can immediately send a notification to people in that location.

"This has already been adopted in several countries, including Japan. We believe it will be very useful for Malaysia," Teo said.

She added that the ministry had proposed including the project under Budget 2026 to ensure funding and implementation.

The notification system could be used for all types of natural disasters and emergency alerts.

Teo also said the ministry, through MCMC, is monitoring the situation in Segamat and Kluang following two tremors reported earlier on Sunday.

"We have not received any complaints about disruptions to telecommunication services but we are keeping a close watch on the networks in the affected areas," she said.

Earlier, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) reported two earthquakes in Segamat and Kluang on Sunday morning.

The first earthquake, measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale, struck Segamat at 6.13am and another 2.8-magnitude earthquake 8, was detected in Kluang at around 9am.

"The tremor was felt in several parts of Johor as well as in Negri Sembilan, Melaka and southern Pahang," MetMalaysia said.
