Sure you can. However most stocks would probably run up before the dividend is announced. And fall after the stock goes XD. Sometimes by a larger amount than the dividend paid. Sometimes the stock doesn't move much.

If you can time yr buying and selling perfectly, I'm sure its possible to do an arbitrage. The most pertinent question is whether you can do it consistently.

Personally I think its very very difficult to be consistent and come up a winner every time. Some people swear by this strategy and if they can make it work for them, I say keep up the good work.

Since you are a self-confessed newbie, my sincere advise is 'DUN TRY!'. Good luck!

and regarding the 'huge load' of stocks that youcan buy -it can be constrained by the trading limit set by the brokerage firm so you can really just buy a certain amount even if you have loads of cash on hand. experts, pls correct me if otherwise :)

Think you can ask yr broker to change the trading limits for you.

Personally I think Starhub is a good stock, even at this price. But the thing is with Singtel at $3+, can Starhub price overtake Singtel one day?

Volume distribution is different, this aspect I know. But psychologically, can it go over Singtel? Any views?

And the peeve on Singtel is they are not really moving up:s13:

I think its silly to be so fixated with the absolute share price of Singtel or Starhub. Or other stocks for that matter.

Just because Singtel price is higher does not means it is better. The price of the share is a function of its market capitalisation and no of shares issued.

ComforDelgro is trading at lower price than its daughter SBSTransit. Why?

UOB is trading higher than DBS. Does that makes it a better bank than DBS?

My bad.. Absolute share price counts for nothing in the emotional controlled share market. :s13:

There are indeed many counters which are trading well above or way below what they are really worth.

Currently, (CC3.SI) is trading at 2.79. My question is is it a good time to buy 1 or 2 lots to earn good in dividend? I am planning to buy it at a good price and keep it for long term.

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

No starhub must get around $2.60 area since their highest price around $2.90.

Thanks both for the guidance. I am a newbie to investments and i have been learning from this forum for the past few days. I know it is up to individuals, but i will like to hear your thoughts; does that means to say if it does not go below 2.60 for e.g., you both will advise not to buy any?

To be honest, i will like to buy a few lots to earn some good dividends and i do not want to miss any opportunity, guessing that when the market gets better, it will take probably a lot of months (or even years) to get the price to be less than e.g. 2.75.
Thanks once again!

Well, the recent high of Starhub is $2.90, we are just trying to get a larger safety margin.

The lower the price, the larger the safety margin. For me, $2.60 is safe enough.

By the way, try not to buy 1 or 2 lots. But at least 3 lots to save on the brokerage fees.

If he uses Standard Chartered's no minimum commission scheme, he can buy 1 or 2 lots to keep.

What's the maths behind getting 3 lots?

If you buy more there's less money wasted to commission. Here is some calculations for you to understand it better.

I'm using DBS vickers as an example, not sure with other brokers.

Under $50,000, the minimum commission is 0.28% or $25(whichever is higher).

To qualify paying $25 and not paying excess for the stocks,

($25/0.28) x 100 = $8928.57 Assuming the price of starhub at 2.9, it works out to $8700 which is the 3 lots.

If you decide to just buy 1 lot, the commission in % = (25/2900) x 100% = 0.86%(thats pretty high!)

Beauty of Stanchart online platform - allows you to buy just 1 lot and not be charged w min comm of say $25. I used to but the required number of lots in order to spread out the comm. Now, can just buy lot by lot. The savings for penny stock is esp huge.
