hi

I have a mini pcie SSD. I thought of installing in MBP Early 2011 Edition. Wonder if anywhere sells this mini pcie To Sata HDD Casing, if so, any compatibility issues to install in the MBP?

thanks for advise in advance.

How cheap is cheap? 120gb is ard 250-300 for something decent.

Cheap SSDs will degrade in read/write performance over time. Better quality SSDs have sustained read/write performance over time. Suggest you get something better like OWC instead of settling for a cheaper SSD just for the sake of it.

Adata, OWC, Intel, Crucial, Samsung

is it legal to change hdd on a new macbook pro? will it break warranty? the people at nubox tell me that it will when i call them, but when i look it up on the internet it says it wont break.

i am thinking of getting a crucial m4 if it is legal.

The short answer: Yes.

---

The longer answer:
The steps for replacing of RAM and HDD are in the Manual for the MacBook Pro.

If you think on it, would Apple tell you how to do so if it would void your warranty? ;)

---

The even longer answer:
Would you be sued if you had changed the HDD? Would you violate any laws? Why use the word "legal" if what you meant was "allowed"? There is a very drastic difference in the 2. ;)

oops, my bad there, i am just very confused as to why the nubox people say it will void the warranty since there is apparently a secret sticker or whatever that will break if you open the unibody case.

As leinad has said, replacing the HDD (and RAM) will not void the warranty for the MacBook Pro, of course if you do it as per the instruction manual. Confirmed by Apple CS too. Give them a call if you are still in doubt though. Be ready with the serial number just in case.

Probably because buying the HDD/RAM from them would cost more than elsewhere. ;) You would trust the salesman, who needs your sales for his commission, over people who have been using Macs for likely more than the sales people ever had?

Apple publishes all their manuals on their web site. You could always read it yourself?

13" MBP Manual, Chapter 3: Boost Your MacBook Pro

15" MBP Manual, also Chapter 3: Boost Your MacBook Pro

/Dan
PS: We frown heavily on blatant spoon-feeding. I got the Manual links simply by going to Google and Entering "Apple MacBook Pro Manual". ;)

The thing is, I found this on the apple site also by googling but could not find any evidence of them explicitly saying that the drive could be replaced without voiding warranty. All I did manage to find was a bunch of Internet people claiming that it could be done, but also found some pages where people changed their drive, some problem happening to their computers and the technicians voiding the aarranty

If you damage the other components in the process of swapping out your drive/RAM, then yes of course you are liable. I think this is common sense.

And I will simply state with confidence that yes, Apple does allow you to change the RAM and HDD; if proof of it being published in the manuals is not good enough for you, I will have to leave it to you to decide how you wish to approach this matter. If you wish to trust a salesman who's commission is dependent on making sales, feel free to.

You appear rather reluctant to trust forum users on the word of a salesman. I can understand the reticence. I will only say this then - I have been using Macs for a good many years, coming to 15, which is longer than practically all the salespersons in Singapore have even had exposure to the platform. I've also helped buy about 12 Macs the last year alone for friends - each and every time changing the RAM and HDD myself. One of them had a logic board issue, it rejected good RAM and so was replaced 1-1 by Apple on that basis alone. None of them have had security seals - that is not how Apple does business.

If something is expressly forbidden, it would not be published in the user-manuals. That is opening yourself up to a class-action suit in the USA, where Apple is based in. I hardly think any company is quite that dumb.
