i see, how about shut down issues? contemplating getting whs2011 since it's quite affordable. but since i have a spare copy of winserver2k3, might as well make use of it.

The issue i have with this box+win7pro now is the 'restart' option in Windows. The box simply doesn't restart after shutting down.. Haven't got much time to google and check the root caused.. So, what I do now is to remote shutdown and use WOL to wake it up..

Installed WHS2011.. Find it that tis tiny box can do even better.. change to FreeNAS after reading the ZFS wiki..

Find it alot of things FreeNAS can't do, I can't even setup transmission inside... going to dump FreeNAS in 1wk time.

Preparing to setup WHS v1 and see how disk pooling works. ;)

how fast can WHSv1 recover a lost disk under the 'disk pooling' storage mechanism? Any advantage compares to say RAID 5? I know about this 'disk pooling' thingy on theory but in actual life, has anyone experinced the recovery process before?

i'm still running on bare disk with no redundancy, my best approach is to backup to external Hdd on importanat files.. Those media files can always be downloaded again so I don't care much about redundancy.

Hi Bros,

I am interested in using this server for ESXi. The price point is really tempting. The ESXi will host my WHS2011/W2k8/WSBS2011 (still deciding on which one) plus maybe 1-2 other VMs for my testing.

I plan to use it as a file and print + RADIUS server. So I really need a RAID 5 to maximize my space (4x2TB to get 6TB). My ESXi will boot from a thumb drive. It can be fake RAID but I can't use software RAID as ESXi doesn't have software RAID. Anyone have any ideas how can I get RAID5 on this?

Also, anyone have any ideas if I can do something like this:
1) Asus RT-N56U with OpenVPN for remote VPN
2) VPN in to WOL my ESXi.
3) ESXi resumes from S3 standby and thus the VMs are also resumed from suspended.

This way, I can switch on my servers only when needed and save some electricity for a greener environment :D

BTW, should be powerful enough to support 2-3 VMs if I have 8GB RAM I hope.

Sorry,

Or any other microservers that have low power consumption, cheap and support RAID 5 (can be "fakeraid" as long as recognized by ESXi)

Don't put ur hopes too high, SBS2011 consume way too much resources and if u look it up.. it requires at least 12GB of memory to function normally.

and fyi, this server is not catered for virtualization. with its low power CPU, slow speed. u will kill the server.

I have yet to explore..

got no time to port over. :(

Whoops sorry. I mean 2k8. Or SBS 2011 essentials/WHS2011.

I just found out that the fakeraid is not supported for ESXi. I need a real raid card...

Any cheap RAID cards?

bro..just get the win7pro, if u don't really need a server based OS.

look at mine :
d75Xa.png

with only uT with 200+ seeds, avr, stock tickers running mainly in the memory.. now i truely think it is over-powered for my usage.. lol

it barely sucks in more than 40W even when it is streaming 1080p mkv..

Eh I want a server not to torrent. I don't torrent often, nearly never.

I want a VM to test technologies. I plan to get technet license to play around with some technologies so I can understand things better.

I plan to use the W2K8/WHS to host different functions. But also, I want a file server to host my files as well. That is the reason I want to run VM ESXi so I can run my file server while giving me the chance to run other VMs too.

Eh, they don't sell this hardware in Singapore so there may not be any warranty. Need other bros to confirm though. Or just call HP to confirm

If you want more juice for the microserver you may want to check out the acer A100 microserver . It can go up to 16gb of ram, has raid and can also have a Intel Xeon processor. But it cost a lot more than the Hp microserver.
