AiCloud - Sync, Share & Stream your files on the go
Anybody tried the AiCloud feature?
What is AiCloud?
In short, it is like a
Dropbox /
SugarSync /
Put.io in your own home without the (free) storage size limits of 2GB / 5GB / 1GB.
The AiCloud feature is available on ASUS
RT-N66U,
RT-AC66U and RT-N16U from firmware 3.0.0.4.220 onwards.
There are other cool features which I did not try out (yet).
Why try AiCloud?
Tried the AiCloud feature over the weekend on the RT-AC66U and seems rather interesting. I work on multiple devices (sometimes desktop, tablet and mobile phone) and need a centralized storage. So both Dropbox and AiCloud's Cloud Disk feature comes in handy.
When it comes to sharing files with friends, I often hit the Dropbox storage limits. So decided to give AiCloud's Cloud Disk a try over the weekend.
Setting AiCloud up
Plugged in a 16GB USB flash drive to the USB ports of the RT-AC66U. Turned on the Cloud Disk feature in AiCloud and do the necessary port-forwarding (8082/tcp, 443/tcp). Downloaded the mobile app from Play Store.
Soon I am accessing the files in the flash drive and creating public links to my friend. The link is some randomly generated public URL that points back to your Cloud Disk. Within the mobile application (AiCloud app), you can easily email/sms the link to your friend.
To put in new files you can also access the USB flash drive as a network share by hitting the router's IP address.
How does it look like?
On my Samsung Note, it pretty much looks like this.
On the desktop, you can access it via the web browser.
So does it really work?
Well, yes. Considering that people are having high speed fibre internet plans and their router are on 24/7. Why not put in a flash disk and enable Cloud Disk to store and share your files?
Not enough storage? Well, you can always plug in a higher capacity disk or do some house keeping. But I got to warn you that public cloud storage providers leverage disk arrays to ensure that data are not lost due to failure of a single disk. You might not enjoy this (disk redundancy) if you are just simply hooking up a USB hard disk or flash drive to the
RT-N66U,
RT-AC66U or RT-N16U.
So do try it out if you are on firmware 3.0.0.4.220.
