Hi guys! This is my virgin post on HWZ and I have specially created this account because I just joined the Kindle bandwagon (yay!). Last night, I placed my order for Kindle Paperwhite (no ads) + leather cover (saddle tan) for USD178.99. I opted for the free super saver shipping to my US address (vpost). I'm not sure how the local delivery charges would be. Anyhow, I'm so stoked for its arrival since this is my first ebook.

I have a few burning questions:

1. Where can I download free ebooks?
2. I understand that Kindle PW supports PDF and DOC files. Can I just transfers these files into my Kindle and that's it? Or do I have to do some conversion?

Disclaimer: I'm a total tech idiot so please be patient with me.

THANKS GUYS!

techbumpkin, I am sure there are more format for the PW.
Me also 1st timer, also just bought online for PW last night.

I think is either download from Amazon, or download from some other website to your PC then transfer to your Kindle thro,
- USB,
- Wireless
- Send to Kindle

Offcourse there is another software that you can use to convert those format over to Kindle format and transfer to Kindle or use that as a PC Library. Forgotten what name, can try search through the previous 20 pages. Rememebred reading it somewhere.

Also Amazon already posted the Manual for the PW online, you can try download a copy to read through 1st while waiting for your PW.

software name is CALIBRE.
its really good. very worthwhile to invest your time and learn how to use it,

e-reader will have best performance when using ebook specific format. MOBI for kindle and EPUB for the rest. (both is very similar actually, can be converted back and forth easily with no quality loss using calibre)

best place for free ebook is project guttenberg. Since you have kindle, amazon also have a lot of free ebook and from time to time have some free deals. be sure to learn how to purchase ebook safely from amazon. (even free book need to be "purchased")

From personal opinion, don't get too excited over the PW. I'm v sure the light won't be even on the screen and the text may not be tact sharp.

Lower your expections, as this is the 1st model of lighted amazon Ebook. I'm sure they will improve with later models.

Very true. If you read the reviews over at Mobileread forums, some people find that the old Kindle 3 screen as good or sharper than the PW due to the layer of glass and the light etching. Anyways, I'm keeping my K3 for the physical buttons and I just installed the font and screensaver hacks to give it a new lease of life. Using new fonts very shiok.

that's why i settled for the normal ebook. no need the special light or whatever.

Those in photography will know that additional glass or filter on the lens will deteriorate the picture quality. the less glass the better.

I will enjoy my normal ebook until Nook or Kindle can improve their lighted moduels in future

Is it true that the xray function doesn't work on ebooks that are not bought from amazon? if so, is there any way we can convert the ebooks into another format such that I can use xray function?

yes it is partially true. i've got books which are not from amazon and x-ray feature is not supported. further, NOT ALL AMAZON BOOKS are supported by x-ray feature also.

Ouch. That sucks. I wonder what gives the xray function. I wish there was a way to convert the ebook to somehow enable xray. lol. :s8:

Well thats disappointing. It would really come in super handy since I'm reading the Game of Thrones. For the record, im about to finish Storm of swords, third book by tmr :s13: I'm also already armed with the feast of crows on my table. ;)
