Hi all,

I see that there are users with issues on the old set-up of white ONT + RG, and black ONT.. I have been using white ONT + RG for 2 years in Bukit Panjang area, and fortunately, the speed and DV have been consistently up all the time.

However, my plan is ending in Dec, and I am aiming for the 200mbps plan @ $49 (hopefully still available when my contract is up). I have a couple of questions.

1) If I decided to keep my current set-up of white ONT + RG, can I get the speeds advertised for 200mbps line? This is a concern as I believe the LAN ports on Huawei RG are only 10/100mbps.

2) If I decided to switch to black ONT (which will mean using DV direct from ONT, and using my own router for home network), how much do I have to pay? (assuming ONT installation waiver) Do I have to pay for the change of ONT? I have looked thru the posts and I could not see any definite answer (or I may have totally missed it).

3) If I decided to use ASUS N66U (@ $209) with the black ONT, will the M1 settings be preset on the device, or do I have to manually set it up (assuming I get the device from M1)? If I have to set up manually, what are the settings (based on page 4 of [Maylyn's Review] ASUS RT-N66U Dark Knight, I might not even have to set up anything)?

You definitely won't get the subscribed speed for 200Mbps using the white ONT + RG combination.
So, you should use this as the reason to negotiable for FREE upgrade for the Black ONT with your own router without any preset. Called 1627, if they won't allow fee waiver, then you're better off signing with other RSP for the next 2 yrs and come back (if you want) to M1 after that.

Right now, other RSP offers 150Mbps at $49.90 /mth.

Ah Wise, what's the latest now for those on the old ONT and renting HG256? Are we able to change it to the new one and use our own router? Can this be done during the re-contract without incurring any charges? And when is the earliest period where we can re-contract? My contract ends in Mar 2013 if I remember correctly.

if wanna remove the HG256 and change ONT to black ont, you must be near the contract ending period and by right there is a ONT collection fee of $12.84 for Nucleus Connect to collect back the ont.

RG HG256 you can self return at M1 Customer Service Centre.

Current they just allow a early recontract somewhere on the 22nd month but case by case basis, you may wanna call the hotline to check when u can ask for a early recontract.

1) Not possible. HG256 is not recommended for more than 100Mbps speed.

2) By right you need to pay the collection fee of the old ont which is $12.84. however u may wan to negotiate since its an upgrade speed and the device is not able to support.

3) The router is not tied on on to any m1 settings. have to self configure your own Network SSID name, password and security. Just run the CD that comes with it if you are not familar.

Hi AhWise, is it correct to assume that the port on the new black ONT is purely a connection port with no special settings required? As they say for hardware, plug and play?

yup! just a normal LAN cable connection output. just plug and play to your router thats all.

unlike some isp which u need to "registered" your router if there is any changes.

Hi, I'm not a tech geek so pardon me if I sound like a fool asking all these questions. I recently signed up for M1 200mbps and I was recommended by a friend to buy ASUS N56u wireless router. The technician came and fixed the white ONT and I connected the router to the ONT. However, I used speedtest to test and my download speed is about 30+mbps n upload is 40+mbps during day and night. The bandwidth just couldn't get any higher than that. Is it that I connected wrongly? or there is some settings I need to do?

when using speedtest are u on wired or wireless.
if wireless it is normal for that speed...........

But I think I see some people with wireless can go up to 100mbps with 3rd party firmware version and enabling hardware NAT for wifi. Eh... What is the meaning of 3rd party firmware and enabling hardware NAT thingy? Really need some enlightenment in this! LOL...

Juz an update.. I got off the phone with M1 CS regarding my home broadband contract.. I am on 100mbps fibre with contract ending 21st Dec.. Told her I wanted to upgrade to 200mbps fibre.. She said I can do early recontract, but because I claimed a laptop under the previous promotion (for the 100mbps fibre), I can only recontract upon expiry of my current contract.

As for the change of ONT, she mentioned I can bring down my white ONT and RG in exchange for the black ONT. According to her, bringing down the white ONT and RG is also considered as contract termination (in my case, expiry). [Note: I may not have rephrased that properly] In any case, I forgot to ask if there are charges involved, but since she did not say anything, I am assuming that it is free. [Note2: it is advisable to ask again on the spot]

This is just an update on my end, and until I have done it myself physically, it is difficult to confirm.

im sure people around here are glad to help out.

do check on your router settings especially the Security type. to achieve better speed, do set the encryption to WPA2/AES.

Wireless are sometimes limited by many factors surrounding your unit like small frequency channel etc.

if you want the best speed out of the plan, wired connection still the best way to go.

lastly, many claimed that 3rd party firmware performs better. u can try read up by google "DD WRT".

not the black ONT that is able to support higher speed meh? I signed up recently for 100Mbps got the black ONT.

running on the 5ghz channel can get up to 100Mbps... if running on 2.4ghz channel I can only get max of 60+Mbps

I'm also facing the same problem as you! I've also set my encryption to wpa2/aes but no luck. Have you found an answer yet?

I am surprised that M1 issued white ONT to you !
I thought AhWise said all NEW subscriber are issued with Black ONT ?
