Thank you samsung and google for spoiling my day. I now have to waste time looking for apps to replace the waste of time default player and hope the muffled sound comes only with the default music player, lest this phone needs to go. I've had a bad experience when you clowns mess my filmware update on s3 in the past and I'm experiencing it now again!!!!!

core primary things users expect from a smart phone: music player, email and Internet. Thank you Samsung for rolling out such a fantastic filmware update to sent my s4 out of this world. .. into the galaxy era where we do not need any of the 3 mentioned function above to work normally and insect free

goodbye Samsung and thank you for the wonderful experience by far. Let me wrap up history of using the galaxy line smarty phones:

s1 - full of potential back then, but filmware was coded badly resulting a lot of screw ups with apps.
s2 - perfect phone. speed, filmware, functionality as a smart phone. .. You've nailed it.
s3 - another flop compare to s2 but still decent until messing up on filmware update.
s4 - again. .. messing up on the filmware update, which is proof of a bunch of engineers not really bothered to test the final product before releasing it to public.

Big deal... Thank you for messing with my time. I truly appreciate of 1 + hour updating to kit kat and now know how TERRIBLE the filmware is. Not going to test all those regular things I do with the phone anymore to explore what other screw ups there are

Can anyone help me try this?

Open the QuickOffice app, then click 'Open File'.

Then from there, click the Menu button and tick "Show advanced devices".

After this is enabled, do you guys see both internal storage and sdcard or only internal storage?

I can't seem to get KitKat to see my sdcard in apps that use the new file picker...

Bro just root and all these problems will go away. My S3 rooted performs the same as a S4 non rooted that I got at home.

Edited: Same or better. Done by clearing all cache and opening the same apps today. S3 takes the crown for most if not even with S4.

Rooting brings you power, performance, battery life, no bloatware and many more customizations.

And it is easily done within 15mins for first timer. Better than spending hours solving cockup problems on TouchWiz...

Touchwhiz really has to tone down. Kit Kat is known to be less of a resource/memory hog and is efficient. When the phone still lags, you know that touchwhiz is too much of a bloat.

Guys, does forcing the gpu to render safe to enable? My friend has it enabled and claims that the phone is smooth. I don't mess with developer options because I don't know what the options mean, but do you guys think that forcing the gpu rendering is safe? Are there any apps that don't work well with it enabled?

Hmm, not much change detected.
My nova launcher got missing on first reboot but after second reboot, it reappeared.
Overall, it feels to be smoother but I still have to wait and see for the effects of battery life.

For my case, I'm absolutely happy with this update. Very obvious overall improvement in responsiveness especially exiting/switching from one app to another.

1) Wi-Fi connection has no issue.

2) Battery drain no difference. Overnight 5% drop. Daytime usage perfectly normal.

3) RAM usage no difference. Normally 1.1~1.2GB for my case.

4) ColorNote, Google Pinyin and 中華萬年曆 uninstalled. But upon reinstallation, all the notes and user dictionary were intact.

5) Google World 'disappeared' from the drawer. Upon another manual restart, which followed by a strange second time 'app optimization', it reappeared.

6) LINE ver 4.0.1 is now built in (?). Can only turn off, not uninstall.

I still very tempted to do a factory reset as I planned earlier on to see if I can push it further. But even now, the overall experience is better than 4.3. No regret.

Upon update, The commonly used Settings icon vanished just like MH370. Anyone knows how to locate this back?! I tried looking within the Apps and wasn't able to locate of the Settings icon either.

A few other apps icons also disappear from my 1st page and it is not obvious to me which are those at this moment. The missing is most troublesome.

I noted that upon installation of 4.4.2, the first thing this Kitkat does was to disable the Sync of my email... and it does not help that the Email setting consist of only these 2 dumb choices:
1. Disable Sync
2. Disable Master Sync

Was expecting a third option "Enable Sync" but no such luck!?

Other than for these hiccups, hope that the upgrade from 4.3 to 4.4.3 is worth the while.

It's 4.4.2, not 4.4.3.

The Settings icon should be in your App drawer. Just press the grid icon at the bottom right of your touch screen.

You may have to reset your email access again. But it should not have touched anything.

No I didn't back up anything. All data that are I need are all stored on my SD card. This is so that when I change phone, all I need is to swap out the SD card.

Only some apps went missing. On reinstallation, all the apps re-detected the relevant files in the SD card. One example is Noteeverything.

I'm also on Starhub. I have access to 4G. Have you tried rebooting the phone?

First of all dude, it's spelled firmware. I fail to see the cinematic connection in your version of spelling.

Secondly, no one except you has listed all those problems. And I'm sure most users here do everything with the phone as you do... namely listening to music, surfing the internet and accessing email.

With regard to the browser, I have no problems with Chrome. My bookmarks were all intact after the update. In fact, I have over a dozen bookmarks. I have also been able to add bookmarks to my current list of them.

With regard to the music player, I've had no problem. I only listen to classical. So maybe the shortcomings of the software do not affect me as much.

I don't sync email on my phone. But the default email client in Android doesn't play nice with all email servers. If it's a Gmail account, I don't see why you wouldn't use the Gmail client. If it's work place email, it might be the settings at the server end that might need resetting for security purposes since the new firmware may identify your phone differently to your email server resulting in the client not able to sync with the server. I have had this experience before.
