recently i face this problem, torrenting on main pc and gaming d3 on laptop, after i finish gaming normally i will plug out the lan cable from the zhone, but after 2 or 3 mins connection will stop.

i need to off/on then can get the connection back.

i notice if i just torrent/surfing on main pc the connection problem will not happen:s11: does this have something to do with the plug in/plug out of the lan cable on the other ports?
That's odd - never heard of this issue. You might want to email NOC and get them to check if there’s any notable errors in the Zhone system log (please don't reboot the Zhone meanwhile - else it'll clear the logs).

If it persists they might advise a firmware upgrade for testing.

Just some information if you are wondering why your browser isn't using the IPv6 connection and fallback to IPv4 instead

And I'm just came back from overseas :D More juicy stuff to come
Your browser is avoiding IPv6.

What we found
What causes a preference for IPv4
Why this worries us

This document explains why we worry when IPv4 is preferred over IPv6.

What we found.

This section applies only when we offered to show you this page from inside the test.

First of all, we detected you had a working IPv6 connection. We also found that your IPv6 connection, was using a "real" IPv6 address; meaning not a Teredo or a 6to4 address.

Second, we detected that when given the choice, your browser decided it would prefer to use IPv4 instead of IPv6. This has some concerns for us.

Causes for preferring IPv4

There are several possible reasons why a browser might prefer IPv4 instead of IPv6.

Google's "Chrome" has a "fast fallback" mechanism. On the first try to a site, it will prefer IPv6. If connections take longer than a third of a second, IPv4 is attempted in parallel; and the better of the two will be used for that site. (more info)
Firefox (recent builds) does the same as Chrome. (more info)
The latest Windows 7 and Windows 8 updates will periodically test to see if IPv6 works. If the health check fails, then many applications (including Internet Explorer) will use IPv4, to insulate you from any local IPv6 misconfiguration. (more info)
Apple's latest Lion and Mountain Lion updates will prefer whichever is "faster" for a given destination. (more info)

Why this worries us

When you use the Internet, a connection is made between your computer, and the service you're connecting to. To connect, you have to have the other side's IP - Internet Protocol - number. And, when you connect, they see yours, so they can send traffic back to you and your applications.

The Internet protocol that we've been using for the 1990's and the 2000s, has run out of these unique numbers. We can keep going, but with some limitations, by sharing multiple machines with one number. Often times, we do this at home or at work.

What is changing is that the Internet Service Providers are all facing the fact that they will have to implement this type of address sharing, on a much larger scale. Some buzzwords you may hear: NAT, CGN, Carrier Grade NAT, LSN, Large Scale NAT. They all look something like this:

ipv4_nat_1.jpg

The thing to watch for here: Many houses sharing one public address.

What happens if one of those homes has a bored hacker, or (more likely) a compromised machine owned by someone who doesn't stay up to date, and doesn't run antivirus software? What happens when that machine starts to attack your favorite web sites? What about your banking site?

Those sites will have to ultimately protect themselves, by blocking the traffic. Unfortunately, they only see the shared address, so their blocking it looks like this:

ipv4_nat_2.jpg

This is not a good situation. And the main way to avoid it, is to make sure that your IPv6 is working; and to make sure that IPv6 is the preferred protocol.

Most OS's and Browsers will automatically have a strong bias towards a working IPv6 connection instead of the (possibly shared address) IPv4 connection. If yours does not, and you want to see this changed, let the browser company know. You might also find other browsers on the same OS will work the way you'd expect, if you need a work-around.

Why else should I care about IPv4 being preferred instead of IPv6, when I have both available?

Sites that determine your location automatically, will get this wrong more frequently when you share an IPv4 address with people in other cities.
The box that shares an address between you and the other hundreds of houses, may become performance constrained (cpu, network, TCP ports)
The box is a potential central point of failure for your internet access
Sharing IPv4 addresses is an extra expense for the ISP that they will be passing on to their customers

Could be limitation of my infra. I'll see if I can move the Linux mirror hosting back onto my NAS.

BTW a seemingly random question - any good HTTP download manager for OSX? I've switched from Windows, but can never find anything as good as IDM...

My current server tops out at around 500Mbps (it's an ARM based server)

Single thread download from Mac Mini which is wired to Router. Not a good speed.

PC Show

Correct me if I'm wrong.

The "promo" is just "1 Free LAN Cabling" right? Or I'm missing something

1 Free LAN cabling and the option to get the Asus RT-AC68U via monthly installments instead of having to pay it all in one shot :)

Hi,

just to let you know, the application form has some years wrongly stated as 2013 instead of 2014.

On a side note, would I be eligible to switch over to this since my application is still stuck under insufficient capacity from march til now? meaning to get the free 50meters LAN cabling as well.

Also I read that there is no faceplate provided. So are you able to advise what are the rough charges for the faceplate?

I see. Just started my service on 8-May, am I eligible for this?

Hello!

I'm afraid the promo bundles are for new subscribers only, if your service has already been activated we can't do it :(

We understand that it can be a little frustrating when a company suddenly comes out with a promotion when you just signed on for no-promo price. One of the reasons why we don't usually do crazy price slashing promotions is precisely to be fair to existing customers! :)

If your service hasn't been activated yet due to an OpenNet delay we might be able to do an exception - could you e-mail sales@viewqwest.com with your details?

Best place for faceplates is likely sim lim square (or sim lim tower) - you should be able to get one for under $10 i think, but tbh havn't checked the prices in a while. Perhaps some other users can advise on this

Hello viewqwest, could you elaborate further what is meant by "LAN cabling"?

Is the promo more beneficial for those who have a need to place their modems &/or routers further away from their PCs?

Thanks!

As extracted from the Application form :

PC SHOW 2013 – Promotional Terms of Service
a) This promotion is not valid with any other promotion.
b) “1 Free LAN Cabling” refers to a Cat5e cable of length no more than 50m, with surface trunking, up to a maximum value of $75.
i. A designated contractor will be appointed by ViewQwest. Should the subscriber wish to engage the contractor for further services they may do so at their own discretion/cost.
ii. ViewQwest will not be responsible or mediate in any dispute with the contractor regarding any damages or compensation sought by the subscriber relating to the “1 Free LAN cabling” promotional item or any other services provided by the contractor.
iii. Cabling must be done on same level, no face plate will be provided.
c) This promotion is not valid to any existing ViewQwest subscriber who has more than 4 months remaining on their contract.

P.s yes there is an typo in the application form. already posted about it earlier. It should be 2014 instead of 2013
