And if all we watch is free to air channels, it doesn't make much sense.

If you r just watching free-to-air, stick to FHD tvs. 4K transmission in Singapore is going to take some time - just look at how long it took for HD free-to-air! Even today, i cant receive at my place

To be fair, Singapore is one of the first countries in the world to roll out HD free to air in a large way.

Even in USA, only their paid subscribers have that privilege.

yup, but my point is - it will prob take another 8-10 yrs before we have free-to-air 4K - so there's no point buying a 4K tv if all u watch is free-to-air

this is only partially right. Transmit HD free to sir does not means contain is HD either.
This is just like Nicam system since many years back. That does not means program is transmitted in bi-language. National day live is one very good example!

Think may be another 1 or 2 years time all TV selling over here will be 4K TV.

In that case if your existing TV is spoil and due to only watch free-to-air programs...so you will wait another 8 to 10 years than buy a 4K TV ???

Sure - target is by xmas next year you will be able to buy 4k players and 4k blurays

Next year just round the corner and when first launch both the true 4K players and blu ray will be expensive...than again need wait for the price to drop....may need to wait another 1 or 2 years.....by the time 3 years later when you ready to buy into 4K items , maybe there will be 5k or 6k or even 8k TV coming out.

So it will be an never ending story...life is short...enjoy the present technology has to offer and worry about the future technology...you are living in the present...

Good advice.

Not everything is tied to monetary terms.
One might get a cheaper TV if you wait a few years - but have you thought about the cost of enjoying the technology during that time span?

At the end of the day, some of these things will even out over time. Buy @ higher price and enjoy the new tech for a longer period of time vs. buying cheaper and missing out the experience earlier.

Of course if you're limited by budget, then plan within your means. If money isn't really a problem but you're trying to be economical, do spare a thought for the above equation if you would be better off enjoying better hardware/technology earlier or it's really negligible and it's better off waiting.

And then of course technology is ever changing... it's like someone asking if it is a good time to buy a PC now or wait till the next refresh - that really depends on the circumstances and there's always something new thereafter.

Cheers!

The question is whether you will buy any 4k content at all for the next few years.

Let's say one disc costs $50 locally will anyone in this forum buy that?

It's also about timing.. if one needs a TV today, I will still say a Full HD is good, and a 4k is a bonus.

In 1-2 years time, then things may change.

A matter of happiness will do.

Just like I brought a Pioneer Plasma 10 years ago at a price of 8K plus and happily used it for near to 10 years without knowing what new TV in the market till the day I needed one..........................:D

I think the number of years of usage is well deserve the price I am paying for..........................;)

And now we are talking about a 4K TVs which are selling at a much much lower price..........................:s12:

I can bet u r very wrong on this. FHD will be here for several more years - just like not all TVs today have 3D bec some people don't want/need 3D. As long as there is a material price difference bet the 2. In a year or two, i shall dig up your post! :s13:

Don't see the logic.

If i only watch free-to-air and my existing TV spoils TODAY, of course i will buy another TV BUT i would NOT buy a 4K TV TODAY bec there is still a significant price difference. Why pay more for something u don't need?

Tbh, the practical difference bet 4k and UHD is minimal:
No, TV makers, 4K and UHD are not the same thing | ExtremeTech

I m sure u can play back true 4k blurays on the 4k tvs being sold today provided there is hdcp 2.2 support all along the chain

Dun be a cheapskate and try to frighten everyone lah, 4K tvs are cheaper or slightly more expensive than FHD TVs, just do your homework and HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2 HEVC playback can be found on even the most basic 4k sets these days, so what are you cautioning people about? I was shopping for a TV a month ago and a 55"FHD cost more than 49" UHD, it was no brainer, with HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2, for my bedroom, so stop giving bad advise here just because you are penny pinching and expect everyone to buy a dinosaur. I am enjoying my 4k TV in my room and for the cheap price, all my blu rays never looked so good. Priceless! Hope everyone dun take this useless caution from an idiot, if you need a TV today, get a good 4k one, the only caution is buying FHD today.

I believe this thread is more for awareness and should not be so much as to discourage buying of 4K TV. I find the HDCP2.2 information is good though.

Users should consider this factor before making a purchase.

Please read this thread from the beginning b4 jumping in and making yourself look STUPID! My concern was more about AVamps than TVs. In fact, i posted this thread on the Home Theatre forum but it was moved into this House of Display forum by the moderator.

And who do u think u are that gives u the right to come in and insult people? Hv u been taught manners? Or maybe u r just a nine-yr old kid or maybe a forty-yr old with the mentality of a nine-yr old in which case u have an excuse. Otherwise please leave yr insults in some other forum b4 u get thrown out like u deserve - this forum is only for CIVILISED people (plse look that up in a dictionary if u dont understand the word)

I started this thread to give useful information to those who have NOT yet bought their av equipment. If u have already bgt your stuff and believe they are 4K compatible - good for you - I couldn't be less bothered - the road to hell is paved with good intention!

Don't talk about certain 4K models which are sold at surprisingly low prices lah. If you talk about the higher end ones that cost close to 5 figures or exceeding 5 figures, for that kind of money personally I'd rather get an OLED screen.

There is barely any REAL 4K content out there. Very few blu-rays are 4K. Have yet to see any DVDs that are 4K. As for mioTV and Starhub, many of their channels are not even HD let alone 4K. Free to air even more no need to talk. AFAIK no console supports 4K at this stage. So unless you can some how get streaming videos that are REAL 4K, what's the point?

Its just like the new Apple iMac with 4K screen. No game supports that kind of resolution and again, barely any videos that are real 4K. So why bother?

DVDs are only 480p; cable TV have the worst resolution to date
and many are still on stereo which makes it irrelevant to
watch movies on cable TV.

4K is like Sony High resolution audio which still will take years
before it become a mainstream thing for everyone to embark on.
