Erm the problem is the quantenna driver. So using RMerlin isnt gonna solve the problem, albeit RMerlin has done a good job in stablising the firmware in other aspects..
An updated Quantenna driver is included in beta 378.50, as mentioned above.

Lol. The updated quantenna driver comes from the existing firmware which was not released, but carries the same version as 3885 leh. Unless i am wrong in this, if not do u think there is a difference between RMerlin and 3885?

Since you have the idea, why dont you bring it up to them?

The thing is that things usually dont move when u make a claim publicly, unless you have the evidence to do so.

Thus far, even those who did a modification to the heatsink and has a drop in temperature, is still facing some performance issues.

So its not exactly true that its temperature related.

There are some people who genuinely have faulty products and this complicates the issue.

lets wait for ahduck's update on this..

It certainly is heat related.
What is heat related, premature failure.
I purchased 2 of these way back when they first came out, and one was for my brother, I never updated his till last night (will see how that goes but so far so good).

But mine I updated to every new firmware, and I have raised my router since day 1.
Over the course I noticed the router getting warmer, and more unreliable in the past 2-3 months.

I also did not believe the ones that a laptop cooler helped UNTIL, mine got soo bad that I even had to reflash and WPS reset to fix issues (that was NEVER there in the first 3 months of ownership). So what happens is the heat will destroy (weaken) the electronics inside, at first it starts with little glitches, then gets major like mine.

At the end of my first one, I could not get rid of PS4 lag at all UNTIL I put a laptop cooler under it (but it still had issues due to the heat damage).

MY new replacement has been running great so far, 5 days with no lag, no 5GHz drops, ect..
YES I now have a cooler under it as this router I hope will last me years now at superb performance, does the firmware need work still YES, but it is working now.

Did I have a faulty unit at start, I don't think so, as I had none of the problems I had in the past 2-3 months, can I prove anything, NO as I do not own multiple of these. Why is my brothers fine, I believe that I never updated his firmware as they cranked up something to get things working better (more heat), but he put a cooler under his also now, so I flashed it last night to the newest.

BUt if you want to throw money out and take your less than 50% chance without a fan, go for it, I am sure some will survive, but most will fail.

If you have flashed to the newest firmware and WPS reset and load everything back manually, and you still have issues, then your unit is most likely bad (due to whatever you believe). (for 1 device use only, as I do not own 2)

Offical Firmware anyway just to add the CPU temp to the interface ?

I decided not to touch the Merlin firmware as now nothing break ... so I will just stick to official firmware...... As I don't want to hard reset .
