its too time consuming, complex and very risky. I can't imagine if i brick it. haha.

for the time being, just bear with it. haha

If only DDWRT is as easy as Asuswrt-Merlin, I'm sure everybody will definitely give it a try.

Come on, today is still CNY and distro is closed. Who want the risk of bricking the router? The earliest Avertek opens is next Monday: Avertek - Contact Us

They not open on Monday too..

Dear all,

Please be informed that our service centre will be closed for Chinese New Year.

ASUS Service Centre: 18/2/2015 - 22/02/2015
Avertek Service Centre: 18/2/2015 - 24/2/2015
Ban leong Service Centre: 18/2/2015 - 23/2/2015

Best regard,

My step as follows:

1) Follow this posting to flash in DDWRT - SmallNetBuilder Forums - View Single Post - dd-wrt for RT-AC87R

2) Load factory default in DDWRT .

3) Browse to update firmware page load in Merlin 378.50.

4) End of the cycle ... power cycle the router ... no need to press the RESET .... then start to configure everything that you need in Merlin interface.

I am not sure from step 3 to step 4 ... did I mix some setting in the router .... become combining stability of DDWRT + using Merlin interface which most of us like ??

Now it is into 37 hours of connection already for both phone. Going to break the cycle liao as going out liao ........:(

Give it a try ..... who know it might have surprise result !.. it is stable for me since the pass 37 hours.... all whatapps / Q00 advertisement all functioning well in both wake and sleep mode..

Plus ... own risk .... I am not sure will it break your router during CNY ....:D

I am going to give this a try tonight, though I am going to clean it out even better (or try)

I will report my findings in a day or 2, or sooner if problems come up.

I just got done loading it, I must say Asus is easier to configure
I had a glitch, I can not use chrome web browser, I had to use firefox, BUT SO FAR it is working perfectly. time will tell but all my other glitches have no shown up yet. I had to turn on beam forming.

IF this lasts, This has to be the most strangest way to get this router to work with stock firmware (or merlins, that I am using also).

EDIT1:
Well that lasted 1 hour then iphone connected no wifi, turn off wifi then back on works, lasted one more hour and had to repeat
BUT I did turn on beamforming, SO would a few out their with this problem go into your router and shut beamforming off, start with the 5GHz and if the problem continues shut the 2.4GHz beamforming off, you may need to reboot after you do it.
Of course I may need to reboot, as I have not yet since turning it on, and I do not think its working.

EDIT2: Nope same crap as before don't bother, I will be switching back to dd-wrt tonight or in the morning. I do have to say merlins version is much worse for me than Asus official.

You might not be able to use firmware restoration utility if u spoil the unit..

Why not?
I use the asus firmware restoration tool to flash back and forth all the time, hold the reset button in while powering on the router for 20 seconds.

Its really not that complicated, what you do will clear out (at least I hope) everything.

See my first post HERE for instructions, any questions ask.

Of course there is always a slight chance of bricking your router BUT it may have been defective in the first place and it could brick with asus firmware also.

there are instances where firmware utility is unable to recognise the router even when you enter into recovery mode.. I'm unsure of the reason why. this is uncommon, but happens.

How do i get the signature version updated to 1.030? I was able to get to 1.028 previously when i was with merlin firmware. but now, no matter how many restarts or enabling the AiProtection feature, doesn't help to get the version updated..
