I dun think being an interpreter is a crime unless you actively participate in the murder and torture of people. It's just a job like any other although post war, many interpreters were murdered because of them working with the enemy.

Not a crime because no laws states that working with the enemy is criminal.
But the morality of it, and the fact that he is willing to do so, speaks volumes.

Dun be kum gong la. Posting in sammyboy and posting here in a forum of a Temasek held company is different thing.

And we have sheep who respect a man who created an atmosphere of fear, suppressing people from airing their views freely.

The amt of wealth amassed by LKY for his family is sufficient for them to last many generations to come. Most importantly, all the assets generate even more wealth for them.

The part on China is not quite correct. China had been opening up after Mao's death. And his successors had been many leaps and bounds on economic reforms. With or without LKY, China is on the path of a successful economic reform.

Sent from Windows Phone X using GAGT

Mao died in 1976 and the Gang of 4 四人帮 (Mao's wife and 3 other top officials) already plotting to seize the power. On the other side of the court, Deng Xiaoping outmanoeuvre the Gang of 4, put them behind bar and took over Mao position in 1978.

China was full of problem during 1970s, esp ppl r dying due to famine, earthquake, under employed due to aftermath of cultural revolution, the technology r still very far behind others, etc.
Indeed, many ppl in SE Asia r sending $, old clothing, etc back to China.

Deng was smart, but still a communist. The CCP was still full of 开国元勋 then. it was not easy to convince all these old communist to abandon their socialist ideas and to go for capitalist ideas. It is almost equal to giving up communism.

immediately, after Deng gain power in 1978, he visited N Korea, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia & Singapore.
he seen how LKY run the country like and get the inspiration.

In 1979, he started economy reform with Shenzhen as his experimental playground. as he said, 先让一部分人富起来. that year he was already 75 yo.

THE DHANABALAN SLAPPING INCIDENT

After being elected in 1984 , LHL was appointed a second Minister of Finance (understudy to Richard Hu, the Minister in charge of the ministry). Richard Hu’s office was on the 43th floor of the Treasure Building off Shenton Way and LHL had his office a few floors below.

During that period, the “inner” cabinet used to have pre-meetings before the actual cabinet meetings where LKY would be present. It was at one of these pre-meetings that the slapping incident occurred. LHL had earlier gone to Richard Hu’s office to request for a certain file, and when told by RH’s secretary that her boss was not around, LHL demanded the file and took it with him without first obtaining verbal clearance from RH.

Later that afternoon when they were at the pre-meeting, RH chided LHL for his behaviour, that he was not showing respect to senior members of the cabinet. Present in the meeting was RH, LHL, Dhanabalan, Dr Tony Tan, Yeo Ning Hong, and Deputy PM Goh Chok Tong. LHL brushed off RH’s criticism, to which Dr Tony Tan was the first to come to RH’s assistance, telling LHL to be more courteous in his behaviour. Dhanabalan then joined in the fracas and agreed with TT. It was at this point LHL lost his cool and told Dhana off with some racist remarks. With sentiments riding high, Dhana countered by saying that LHL’s own sister also married an Indian, to which LHL reached across the table and slapped Dhana shouting “Leave my family affairs out of this”.

Dhana, TT and Yeo Ning Hong, then walked out of the meeting. It was at this point that GCK, hitherto a quiet spectator in the heated dispute, stood up and told LHL to stand down and that he would refer the incident to his father. The 3 ministers were then recalled into the meeting. TT and Yeo Ning Hing returned, but Dhana did not.

After GCK had reported the matter to LKY, the old man then forced his son to apologise not only to Dhana but the other senior ministers as well. All 3 mentioned ministers who left the meeting tendered their resignation to LKY (RH ate humble pie, continuing as if nothing happened). The old man persuaded all the 3 disenchanted ministers to re-consider their decision. Both TT and Yeo Ning Hong then agreed to rescind their resignation and continue their services, with the condition that LKY reign in his wild card son. Dhana told LKY that he could not continue but that he would stay on until the next general elections, upon which he would not be contesting.

Subsequently a few years later Yeo Ning Hong stepped down, and a while later so did TT.

Ho Ching as ST CEO

Not many people know that the HO family already has close association with the LEE family for quite a number of years, prior to Ho Ching marriage to LHL. Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee, the Senior Minister of State for Law, btw, is related to Ho Ching.

During her tenure as CEO of the ST group towards the end of the ’90s, the group was involved in the purchase of Micropolis, an American hard disk manufacturing company which had a plant in Singapore. This takeover was done at a time when the world was moving into contract manufacturing and outsourcing was a fast catch-on word. The survival of fringe manufacturers were on tenterhooks given this scenerio.

So the timing of the purchase was certainly inappropriate. As a result of their investment, for the 3 years which they held on to this baby of Ho Ching’s, the ST group suffered a capital loss of $300m after it was disposed off to another buyer, who has since re-invented the company and put them back into the world competitive edge with new products and services.

But the real reason for the disposal of Micropolis was not so much the loss which ST group had suffered or the meaningless potential the company had for the group in the future. The reason came from a completely different quarter.

Seagate was on the verge of pulling out its factory and investments in Singapore by relocating to China, where the manufacturing of computer parts for world consumption is now chiefly concentrated in. At the back of their mind, besides this shift of manufacturing focus, was the fact that while the Singapore government had encouraged and provided incentives for them to continue their operations here, another department of the government was actually doing business that was in direct competition to them (Micropolis.).

This was unacceptable. An ultimatum was set, either Acropolis goes or Segate goes. The lost of Seagate would mean laying off more than 5,000 workers at a time when the retrenchment rate here was at one of its highest. The government could not compromise. The rest is history.

Glenn Knight – Was He Fixed?

With regards to Glenn Knight, he was a DPP with the AGC and then, the 1st Director of CAD in 1984. He poked his nose into some familee affairs and was ‘framed’ and charged with corruption (Batam Country Club) in 1991.
In the Batam investment fiasco, GK, with his wife, had “joined” TIB’s Ng Ser Miang to set up a company in Batam, working on a proposed property or resort development project. When it was decided to put down GK from his pedestal, they initially tried to catch him for “offences” committed in the Batam project, claiming that he had cheated Ng Ser Miang (misrepresentation of facts).

But they could not find any evidence to incriminate him. So that charge was subsequently dropped. But only after they had found something contentious to charge him with, and that was his earlier application for a car loan from the government. That charge, though, was frivolous and untenable in any serious court in which the adjudication of justice is of high moral principle. But that was not the case.

GK had purchase a Subaru Legacy from the agents in Singapore. It must be borne in mind that at that time Nissan in Japan had taken over Subaru Motors, and so the sale of Nissan and Subaru vehicles in Singapore posed a challenge for the agent(s). The Legacy was fighting with the Cefiro (Nissan) for market share in the same segment (up market 2 litre Japanese sedans). Nissan could not allow the Subaru Legacy to undercut and underpin its own Cefiro by offering discounts in order to get rid of a lot of unsold stocks.
So they devised an ingenious way – buyers of Subaru Legacy would not get discount, but they would receive a credit note of $5,000 after the purchase was completed (i.e. after full payment has been received). This was a commercial decision by Nissan/Subaru, and the practice was uniformly applied to all customers. GK, in order to apply for the government car loan, had to provide the Ministry of Finance with the Quotation/Invoice from Subaru. This was given to MOF accordingly upon which his loan was approved.

Subsequently, Subaru issued a credit note to GK, together with the cheque for $5,000 in line with its promotional campaign (the same $5,000 refund being given to all buyers of Subaru in Singapore). His nemesis chose to use this “credit note” (refund) as the weapon to destroy him. They interpreted this as committing fraud to cheat the government of lending him a loan of a quantum higher than would have been the case by inflating the purchase price by $5,000. In any court of law where justice is fairly applied, this charge could not hold. Reason was, firstly, it would mean that Nissan/ Subaru had collaborated together with GK to cheat the government (which was not the case); and secondly, all other buyers of Subaru vehicles who had obtained finances from their employers or the finance companies has also cheat under similar circumstances (which again was not the case).

Being a qualified lawyer, why didn’t GK fight his case based on this tenable ground? He knew his time was up, if they had lost this case in court they would have trumped up some other charges, and the next one could even involve punishment would could be more punitive than the last (to teach him a lesson he’ll never forget). He was convicted and jailed for this offence, and debarred from legal practice. So, he was initially sentenced to 3 months imprisonment but his appeal was successful and was reduced to 1 day imprisonment and a fine. The appeal Judge then was L P Thean.

Glenn was lucky to get off with a slap on the wrist for his offences (whether framed or not) because of his close connections with many TOP officials and that he was intended to a cursory warning for those know too much . Another Head of CFB in CID although charged with the same offence didn’t get the 1 day’s jail and fined. His name was Wilfred Adrian Nathan.

Anyway, slap or no slap on the wrist, Glenn was out of the game and went into the low. He was disbarred by the High Court. After his release from jail, he gave up his SICC membership, sold his bunglow in Frankel estate and a terrace house in Balestier. He move to a 3 room flat at Telok Blangah.

You could see help out in his wife’s Pub in Boat Quay, where he either chat and drank with TOP officials and lawyers chatting and drinking with him, seeking solace from the booze. He kept his gap shut about the real story behind his conviction, hoping for deliverance. He could not practise law, but some from the legal fraternity paid him on piecemeal basis for legal advisory work from time to time to keep him financially alive (great friends he got).

He was later reinstated in 2007 as a lawyer and joined the law firm Bernard & Rada Law Corporation. Surprisingly during his reinstatement application hearing, K Shanmugam backed Mr Knight’s strength of character and CJ Chan Sek Keong and 2 other Judges allowed his reinstatement to the Bar.
His removal from office is construed as a blessing for Sinkapore, in disguise. Glenn was a PAP man and would have been an great asset for the PAPies had he not stuck his nose into where it doesn’t belong. Had he stayed on, he would most probably be a formidable force to be reckon with, for the opposition, that is.

Coming to Phey Yew Kok, the official story is that Phey Yew Kok, President of the NTUC and a PAP MP, was charged on four counts of criminal breach of trust involving a total sum of S$83,000.He was also charged on two counts under the Trade Unions Act for investing $18,000 of trade-union money in a private supermarket without the approval of the minister.

This is actually what happened. Phey and his buddies set a private supermarket called Safewell or something like that. On public holidays, his staff loaded goods from SILO supermarket main warehouse and sent these to Safewell supermarket. They then invoiced this company at cost price. There is therefore no loss on the books but no profit either. Further investigations revealed that these cashiers from SILO were in cahoots with the owners of nearby provision stores. These owners lined up with (eg) $200 worth of goods and the cashiers keyed in only $100-00 and the proceeds were shared later. Phey then rented a couple of lorries to physically steal goods from his own supermarkets on the first day of CNY, when the supermarkets were closed. Someone took photographs (obviously not with digital cameras, and certainly no STOMP) and these surfaced later. In short, he was abusing his position to get his supplies cheaper by getting the buying power of SILO to benefit his company.

Also, he was alleged to have used union funds to invest in a private venture and purchased tour buses for the unions amongst other things. (Just a trivia, the Merz he abandoned, Car plate 6666, 6666 struck 4-D 1st prize two weeks after he ran.)

As normal in such cases, he was released on bail. But unusually, he was not asked to surrender his passport. But Phey Yew Kok decided to jump bail anyway, and his two sureties lost their $50,000 deposit. Some say he was last heard of in Thailand, eking out a miserable existence as a fugitive, others claim he is operating a transport company in Taiwan.

When JBJ asked in parliament why the police did not ask the court to have Phey's passport seized, Chua Sian Chin the MHA minister lied in parliament that the police officer forgot. Later after repeated questioning by JBJ, he revealed that the Police did ask for the passport to be seized. The solicitor general Ghow however did not do so.

It is speculated that Phey would have open a can of worm if had he been really taken to the stand. The charges he faces was just the tip of the iceberg.

The story started when Lim Chee Onn was slated to replace Devan Nair, who was stepping down to be President. Phey sudddenly made know his intention to stand for the post and oppose Lim Chee Onn.

He had the support of a few omnibus unions under him (SILO and PIEU). Mind you, SILO, PIEU etc were large omnibus unions based on broad industry grouping. Simple maths would have him taken away a significant no of votes if he run for election in NTUC. What Phey want to gain by opposing Lim Chee On was protected his power base and uses the union funds to provide perks to his member and enriching himself.

But Phey was not a very popular person in the labour union scene. He not only had a lot of enemies in his own union - even Devan Nair once said in the ST I think that of all the unions, the Omnibus unions seemed to receive the most number of threats in the mail. In fact, after Phey's downfall, the NTUC even got letters from INDONESIA, believe it or not - people had actually left Singapore to live there because he made life so tough for them.

Phey also was on the NWC. When some people in SIA didnt' want to donate money to schemes he supported e.g. lottery tickets, he actually HAD THEIR NWC wage increase and 13 month pay withheld!!!

Moreover, he had a role in fixing Tan Wah Piow and other students activitists. In the 1970's, student agitation in Uni Singapore was growing and for the first time, they realized that there were no hidden hands involved, no foreign funding and worse still no communist bogeyman available. It was a genuine student movement who became aware of the wider world.

Toh Chin Chye was getting mad and demanding detention, deporting of foreign students and sacking. But some PAP cadres and the Union movement actually showing empathy. They fought the communist in the trenches and knew without doubt the differences between the communist and this lot. Even more upsetting was that the general student population including academia actually supported the student leaders. The suitability certificate introduced to keep away undesirable students was not working.

For the first time, old man and his close associates were in a quandary. ISA could not be applied. So in the end, the courts we brought in, Tan Wah Piow was charged (and he fled), the Malaysian and HK students were deported. Others student was expelled from their unis.

Hence, there's a school of thought that he was going to blurt the lot on the PAP/Government's role in assisting him to fix the students activists if he was taken to court.

But opposing Lim Chee Onn was certainly the biggest mistake he made. Shortly after he made the announcement, he was arrested for embezzlement and charged. Lim Chee Onn took over and disbanded the omnibus unions and broke it into 90 odd smaller unions. They even charged one of his staff for CBT for an amount less than $50 and convicted him. People then knew that it was frighten the rest of the unionist from opposing Lim Chee Onn.

this one ish the typical $2 AIM saga lah. and they are still doing it till this day... put in one more layer of admin to take a chunk of the profits, then transfer the costs to govt or consumer.

anyway the whole WOT has been circulating around for several yrs liao. i rem reading them at least 2 yrs ago. lim kopi ish wait nong nong....

i keen to know about what happen to Lim Chee Onn ? actually, i tot LKY intend groom him take as PM and not GCT.

he seems to be more popular candidate than GCT, with lots of media exposure.

then, suddenly, he left politics in '92 when GCT become PM in '90 and joined Keppel.
