I guess it's okay if you want a sweaty lump on your back.

And I don't understand the logic of not liking to add weight to the bike. Just by carrying the backpack on your back you're already adding weight to the bike. And it's even worse because you are heightening your center of gravity which makes you less able to control the bike in an emergency situation.

TBH and it's for your own good, it's a stupid idea to have a pack on your back.

I pretty much prefer to steer a lighter and more controllable bike then a heavier bike. why bother to reduce weight by buying expensive lighter parts only to add bags on it. with a small backpack that fits snugly to the back, its not much of an issue, to me at least.

gotta check lol bike not with me now last time i use weight + bike - weight to measure

i use (bike + my weight ) - my weight to determine bike's weight

my hardtail ish 14+kg, with everything on about 18kg :s22:

i think frame size plays a part? smaller frame surely is lighter... but by how much?? :s11:

most guys ride on a 17" frame whereas 13.5" is for ladies so it has to be lighter

Thinking of upgrading my foldie to make my ride smoother/faster but not sure what components should i be looking at...

It's a 7-speed Dahon Boardwalk with upgraded wheelset (Kinetix Comp). Planning to change the stock tires to Kojak once i worn them out. Can give some advice?

Except for the wheelset, rest of the specs can be seen at the bottom of this webpage http://www.dahon.jp/2015/product/BoardwalkD7/index.html

Funny leh.

Brompton/Tern/Dahon bikes have luggage mounting in front. It is attached directly to the bicycle frame. Hence, it will not affect the steering.

Something like this:

Way neater and elegant.

Your backpack will smell and you need to wash regularly. Not to mention it is uncomfortable cycling with it for long distance. Will affect cycling posture. I have not seen anyone cycle with a backpack during the half round island and full round island ride.

You can go read it:

http://handsonbike.blogspot.sg/

Easiest way is to either sell it, or change your wheelset so that you can change to 9/10/11 speed groupset.

I feel the bag will affect the handling of the bike even if its on the frame, due to the different weight distribution. I've ever cycled from jurong to changi, take bumboat with bicycle to ubin, cycle around, come back then cycle back to jurong, all with backpack. think I'm used to backpack. :)

anyway I wash my backpack.

Regardless bag on man or bag on bike will affect traveling weight.

Got minimum items attached bag under seat for minimum disturbance. Got more items, use those hugging bag that doesn't sway during piggybacking.

Got even more items, consider driving or taxi.

nope, weights on bike and body is different. trying to steer a heavy bike and a light bike, I'm sure you also experience the difference. also for folding bikes, gotta take into consideration the folding everytime want to fold need to take this out take that out, very troublesome.

Did once with an estimated ard 12kg backpack full of my photography equipment doing a almost 100km familiarization ride for an event. Was testing out how workable was the configuration in order to help with photography covering the event. Felt drained after 60+km. Had to stop for a prata break. :s13::s13:
After the 90km mark, we reach the end point I was totally drained but still need to ride home. Dunno what helped me complete my 10km ride home. Maybe the thought of a good shower and my bed helped me to pushed on till I reached home. =:p

How much time you spent for the round trip?

What was the route you took for the return trip?

i spent about 7 hours total, which included having a nice long meal at changi village hawker centre and countless rest stops. return trip was the same trip there as i wanted to ride back to ECP with my friends where they returned their bikes.

to each his own, i don't think its fair to say another way is stupid just because its not your way. something like this should be down to personal preference, nothing more.

just my 2c!

Based on the link u provided, it seems that my current Kinetix Comp wheelset already can support 9/10/11 speed groupset?

What's the smallest tire available? Durano? Mostly ride on road or PCN.

You are using Kinetix Comp? Yeah.. 10 speed should be ok.

Durano is ok. Or if you are adventurous enough, try Panaracer Minits.

I recall Boardwalk will flex when you pedal hard enough when going upslope or when going fast. Maybe you want to verify that first before deciding?
