Can you guys share your settings because the wireless is not working fine, I'm transferring from my local to the attached USB and the transfer speed is only 4MB/s.

Sorry guys, but no matter what AC87U firmware (Merlin, AsusWRT Betas and Official, even HGG) I've tried, and even after factory resetting my iPhone, the 5GHz network is still bad. I am getting >2000ms pings and packets drops, and it's frustrating to have to fall back on the 2.4GHz network. So I'm going to put my router up to trade with an AC68U since that doesn't have a QTN chip. I hate this router to the extent that I'll do it with no need for a top up. Of course Asus won't care if I'm dissatisfied, they've already got my money.

I know I should probably RMA it before writing it off, but I really don't have to time to go down to their service centre and deal with the downtime while they try to "diagnose the issue" all that. I got this router in September 2015 and it has been nothing but like that since day one. I just want my network to work.

U can go down and swap 1 for 1 ma. Just ask if they have ready stock before gg down, then go down bang table and convince them

Get the 88u or the 5300, I switched to the 88u from the 87 and it works beautifully.

Noted. How does the 5300 differ from 3200 ah? Same triband just higher speeds?

Or if on budget just get second hand ac68u with Warranty also good hor

Theoretical max speed for 5300

2.4 Ghz = 1000Mbps
5.0-1 Ghz = 2167Mbps
5.0-2 Ghz = 2167Mbps

2167+2167+1000=5334 approximate 5300

Theoretical max speed for 3200

2.4 Ghz = 600Mbps
5.0-1 Ghz = 1300Mbps
5.0-2 Ghz = 1300Mbps

1300+1300+600=3200

Just turn off your 5GHz beamforming and you're good to go, no need to write it off lah.

For those having frequent disconnection , you may try what Oric1 said , cool down the router . I used to have bad frequent disconnection after abt few hours of usage , sometimes it just completely disconnect, sometimes it shows connected but just unable to access the internet. The only way to solve it was off the router for about 15 min and turn back on again :( Out of frustration, I came across sbforum and decide to do what they said. bought a laptop cooler and place it under the router to cool it . So far touchwood , about few weeks already never have a disconnection .

I suppose the router has a design flaw and the chips is running too hot ,my cpu temp can go up as high as 89 degree, after placing a cooler , its constant at 64 degree.

I m in no means a network expert, but cooling the router does help solve my issue . Hope it helps for others too . no harm giving it a try :)

* bought the Cooler Master NOTEPAL X-SLIM II too, compliment the router nicely ..lol :)

Did you select 'forget this network' your iPhone (5GHz) after installing the new firmware?

Yes I did. I even reset all contents and settings and set it up as a new phone. I also downgraded down from 9.3 beta to 9.2.1.

My family have iPhone 6 Plus, 6S, iPad Pro, iPad Mini (all 9.2.1) & Galaxy S6 all on AC87U 5GHz (Merlin 378.56_2) without any issue.

Other than your iPhone, did you tried other devices on 5GHz, any problem?

Did u do a ping test to see if theres high ping result or packet drop? Have u ever encountered any apps that tells u yr network is unstable?

Question, does 5ghz work properly on ANY of the stock firmware?

$180 and deal can close.

Finally, after 10 months of struggle I have sent the router back and got a refund. It was a wild ride! I suppose I am not patient enough or was petiant for wey too long! ;) Considering to replace it with 88u or 5300! Any suggestions guys? I just want to feel stable, no thrills, no feeling like a testing monkey in a vicious circle of relentless firmwere updates.
