Hey guys, can I check what is the advantage of using SFP+ ONU stick over normal ONT + rj45 connection to get 10Gbps?
Anything like less heat, more stable connection etc?

I realize only VQ has the ONU SFP+ stick option. I want to see if it is worth it to stick with VQ just for this option.

if you're willing to tinker around a bit... and perhaps gamble the price of a XGSPON ONU stick, i'm sure you can get it working with other ISPs too

the ONT that my ISP provided was a bit on the bulky side, and it also meant I had to waste power on 10Gbase-T on both ends, so i'm happier without it

(though i did have to get an ATA so my home voice would still work, since my ONU stick obviously isn't also an ATA)

Has anyone tried other ONU sticks with VQ's 10G plan? I'm scheduled to received the modem today but the N100 router I got only has 2.5gbe rj45 ports. VQ doesn't have any news when their OptiXstar S800Es will be back in stock either.

As of now, no successful report of using any XGS-PON ONU with any ISP here in this forum (eg: to replace SingTel XGS-PON ONR with a ONU stick).

Maybe it can be done with enough efforts, but the relatively high cost of XGS-PON ONU may prevent many people from trying.

The cost of GPON ONU or GPON Stick is quite a bit cheaper.

Ah okay, cause I went looking on Aliexpress and found some sticks under brands like nokia that were about the price of what VQ was offering with the Optixstar S800E and almost identical in specs on paper so I was wondering if I should give it a try, since i got one of those N100 based routers with intel X520s. But I don't know much in terms of ONUs and how they work so I've been hesitant to place the order

You may want to check out this thread for the past efforts.

GPON ONT/ONR replacement ---> quite some successful stories.
XGS-PON ONT/OR replacement --> no successful story now.

just checking. for people who subscribe 10gbps vq without router. what kind of ONT they give? ie: if i plug rj45 -> 10gbe udm se sfp+ port. i get 10gbps uplink? or should i get the xgspon onu to use with udm se?

(I'm thinking their recontract for the udm se plan requires +500 topup. its super pointless esp for out of contract monthly pricing will stay at $60/mth

if I don't have any active cooling, which is preferable?

You either get a Huawei ONT (single multigig RJ45) or a Fibrehome ONT that can act as a router with 4x1G and 1x multigig 10G RJ45. You’ll certainly get the latter if you have a voice subscription since the Huawei doesn’t have RJ11 telephone jack ports. But otherwise it’s unsure what the criteria is afaik.

exactly as you said, using a RJ45 10G capable SFP+ module to connect to the ONT will grant you 10G connection yes. Just keep in mind the UDM Pro has a max throughput cap of around 3 gbps if IDS/IPS enabled, else real world bandwidth hovers 7-8 gbps

@xiaofan not sure if anyone else has reported the use of Alta Labs Route10, which has 2x SFP+ and 4x 2.5G RJ45.
Used it with the Huawei OptiXStar ONU and working fine, temperature reported on Alta controller hovers 60-65 degrees. No active cooling, placed on desktop.

also adding an observation about performance differences in ONU vs FIBREHOME ONT setup - ONU consistently low 2ms ping to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8. ONT inconsistently high 2ms to 3ms. Honestly not going to actually be able to perceive in real world most of the time but when I play certain games with connection issue indicators, I get them less often with ONU. Not like it matters to my k/d ratio tho lol

Are you the reporter Paul Mah who had early access to VQ Alta router?

Seems to be due to OLT vendor custom profile limits, at least with XGSPON OLT and ONU from Nokia, it might have some non-generic VEIP settings that makes third party ONU not working as expected. I will look into it soon and try manually adapt some third party ONU for compatibility.
just buy one of the maxlinear XGSPON ONU sticks and put the 8311 firmware on it and chances are that you'd be good to go (though of course I can't speak for every XGS-PON ISP in Singapore...)

price is probably one of the bigger blockers but it is what it is

Have you tried it alr? What I was referring to is exactly the XGSPON stick with PRX126 chip, it is not working for Nokia with default profile. If you have succeeded, could you elaborate more on your set up?

install 8311 firmware, fill in everything you need to get O5 status (probably s/n and slid at minimum, and possibly the hw/fw versions, can't quite remember), then get internet through vlan 1494 (or whatever vlan your ISP uses)

myrepublic (apparently) uses a combined pptp/veip setup, but you can skip the veip part if you don't care about the voip/management network

where are you stuck?

I see. I disabled ISP VLAN Fix, turn it back and it works great. Thanks!

Bought the Route10 to try cos cheap lol

Pros
- cheap with good feature set. Some more has POE ports. Bang for buck
- quite plug and play - not much settings needed out of box
- WireGuard works though not available on launch initially

cons
- only 4 LAN ports - higher chance need a switch
- need to have controller - but ok is free la
- software is greatest weakness now cos it’s half way there - now feels like a dumb basic router not as feature rich but pending them to upgrade - power users will sigh for now
- super bright led if put in room - but can turn off
- don’t understand why the terminal/console need to shift click cannot just show it there
- set static ip I need to restart both router and my client. Lol.
- discrepancy between the phone app and the web based controller - like on app I find missing options like to turn off led which I find it weird

Wireguard is available now, please update to latest firmware.

Last speedtest with the Route10 was able to achieve 8Gbps up/down with the Huawei SFP+ ONU, with IPS to block out adult content.

I did mention wireguard not available initially but now it works
Whats with the mention of adult content? I didnt say i want to block anything.
I am also not on viewquest - never said I was

My post is to share what I think of it. and that its still lacking on the software part pending further enhancements. bang for buck if dont mind what it lacks right now.

Context: I have a existing singtel 1gbps fibre (ONT) and just signup of 3gbps VQ plan for fallover.

I bought the alta labs route 10 to replace my existing microtik router in hopes that I can conslidate my router into a single unit with automatic dual wan fallover, but the software is so lacking right now. I cant even assign vlans on my singtel wan for IPTV and internet properly. The router have no options for IGMP Proxy, multicast routing, unknown Multicast/unicast flooding / broadcast flooding to replicate my setup from microtik.

Now on the hunt for a new router that can do that....
