Hi, need some advice,

As you can see on the right side, my current mb and cpu is kind of ancient.
Like to upgrade those two.

My Qn is, is it worthwhile to spend that few hundreds more and get a 1151 board, cpu, ddr4
Or just save the money and get a 1150 board, cpu and use back my old Rams?

Casual gaming, usually older games, browsing, office work, very occasional video editing

Thanks

Or... 1151 board that supports DDR3 ram, and undervolt the ram to 1.35V

Will it be stable? My rams are not the L version. Any particular board to recommend? Thanks

Interesting question... my pair of Samsung CK0 is doing 1866 @ 1.35V with Skylake, then a Crucial Ballistix is doing stock clock @ 1.35V with Haswell...

Video edit, rendering and heavy multi tasking will benefit from 1151, cause extra cores. Save $ get the 1150 or 2nd hand one

But all those DDR3 mobo specs show that they support both DDR3 and DDR3L, really need to undervolt the DDR3????

Intel never officially support DDR3. Say long run will kill the CPU

Strangely nobody has said anything when the DDR3 standard is 1.5V yet everyone is using 1.65V ram.

Definitely, Skylake DDR3 IMC is only designed to handle 1.35V DDR3 RAM, running your standard voltage ones is essentially running them on overvolted condition on Skylake. Not recommended to potentially fry it.

1151 for better future value and using back your old ram will not save much.

Z170 board, i3 6100 and cheap DDR4 ram from Amazon.
Overclock DDR4 ram to 2666-2800 and you have a good new platform upgrades.

Z170 is needed to overclock DDR4 and the faster the DDR4 it helps i3 with gaming fps.
You took the wrong path to extract best performance out of the dollars. :s22:

Higher RAM speed hardly (if at all) offers fps boost to games. Rather than wasting money on overclocking RAM, take that Z170 and high speed RAM price premium and divert to Core i5 or a higher-tier graphics card that will boost game fps more directly and effectively.

lol dude, don't understand why u wanna get expensive mobo and ram and scrimp on the processor. ocing your ram won't get u anywhere and from what i understand, the higher frequency the worse the timings, so overclocking it will not bring any significant difference.

Just stick with your x4 965. Based on your usage, I don't see a need to upgrade.

I'm still on the x4 955 and I don't feel compelled to upgrade at all.
