Is 1Gbps fast enough or should i go for 2? I'm still using an old contract and its about $20 a month. Recently seeing the prices on ISP sites and they are all $40+ even for the 1Gbps plans
That is subjective to your usage. If you don't download huge files on daily basis or can afford to just download overnight, there isn't much justification to upscale.

For reference. to watch 4k stream only need 25 Mbps or worst compression, up to 50 Mbps. If you watching 360 VR (those streams are rare and limited), it need up to 500 Mbps and next gen will cut that demand by half which is 250 Mbps.

If you are self hosting then yes, it is good reason to upscale but also advise to use MyRepublic Gamer if selfhost, it is without doubt the best latency among all Residential plans.

I will think that the beauty and strength of this part of the forum is that there are more sensible and healthy discussion or maybe some "challenging questions" from actual adult behaving (except myself  ) forumers. There are of course some who shared not so well research and incorrect info, which is common in a discussion forum since everyone is learning. Sometimes we may be posed with thorny questions, issues and topics during discussion that may challenge our ego, our pride or even our profession (for some) but the outcome should be everyone taking back and learning something in the process. However, at times I do think that words/message can be conveyed in a more respectful manner and being less intimidating, which I think most will still try their best to reply or give their candid answer with a twist of wit. Just a gentle reminder to the righteous: 最有道理的人并不一定就对。To be honest, even I myself do not know as much like many here do, but I learnt a lot from them in the process.

Anyway, I hope most will not be offended on this forum (though I myself do offended few in the past), let's continue to keep the discussion rolling and contribute to the knowledge pool in the process. .
Thank you for sharing, didn't expect not only can learn networking here, also learn life lessons.
I think precisely because this forum is very informative and helpful, people gain more information and knowledge. Then naturally some people will be at the "mount stupid" of Dunning-Kruger graph. When 2 of such people don't agree with each other, argument most probably will happen. Which may be the reason why arguments tends to happen on the "easy" questions.
So after some reflection, my current understanding for 最有道理的人并不一定就对 is that, the argument is probably right but it's probably not 'right' to argue. Though no change can happen in one day but seeing the good examples above I'm inspired to change/learn.
Life is short, complaints are usually not worth sharing, so can just use the precious time to explore/share the interesting findings.
Thanks.

M1 500Mbps (without router) or 1Gbps (with free router TP-Link Archer AX72 or Asus RT-AX3000P), free digital voice.

If you go with M1 500Mbps, you can get TP-Link Archer AX72 BNIB at around S$80 from Carousell.

mesh or continue with bridging?

my current tp,ont & singtel router(old ac plus) are all in the living room. and recently i got some changes resulting in shifting my pc desk(used to be on wired lan) to another spot which is too far for a wired connection. my pc also doesnt have a wireless adapter. having no mesh device and no knowledge on mesh, i went to use an old asus rt-ac66u to do wireless bridge to my singtel router and then place it beside my pc and wired it for network. unfortunately, recently the power adapter for the ac66u broke down.

my current singtel 1gbps too exp. so i asked the question in the post.

given the scenario, would you still stick to going for the m1 plan? i do not mind spending some $ on a new device if needed.

If you plan to give up Singtel TV, then just go with M1 and get the TP-Link Archer AX72 (free with 1Gbps plan or buy at S$80 for 500Mbps plan).

Singtel AC Plus is the worst router from any SIngapre ISPs in the past 10 years. Maybe only Starhub Nokia Beacon 1 came close. So any current router in the market will be better than it.

However, you need to post the floor plan to see if a wireless media bridge idea will work or not. In fact, Archer AX72 will work in EasyMesh mode with Wireless backhaul and Ethernet backhaul, so you can get another unit if the floor plan is suitable.

M1 ONT -- TP-Link Archer AX72 main router -- wireless backhaul -- Archer AX72 EasyMesh node -- PC

Hello XF,

The red are my ONT to R-Router in the liv room. Blue is my current pc desk with a bridged asus RT-AC66U (power adapter is broken now, so back to mobile usb tethering for the time).

You can go with M1 and two units of TP-Link Archer AX72, one in the living room and one in Bedroom 3. It should work for your your floor plan.

Kitchen area may have slightly weaker signal but that is usually not a big issue.

thanks a lot for input! probably going to keep the singtel tv first since that one can be kept separate and not bundled with the home BB like the singtel home voice.

Even if you are continuing with SingTel for Fibre Internet and keep the SingTel TV box, you can still upgrade the AC Plus to TP-Link Archer AX72.

Singtel ONT -- Archer AX72 EasyMesh main router with SingTel VLAN profile -- SingTel TV box.

Archer AX72 EasyMesh main router -- wireless backhaul -- Archer AX72 EasyMesh mesh node -- Desktop PC

still on my singtel connection but after signing new contract with m1, ive replaced the ac plus with the TPL ax72. my singtel tv box doesnt seems to be able to start up properly. takes very long and eventually ask to reboot both the modem&tv box. ive tried to set up the singtel vlan profile(from the default isp list) but i've got no internet(solid amber led on internet indicator) after doing that. only if i remove that isp profile to none then i get back the internet.

Singtel ONR -- TP-Link Archer AX72 (AP mode or router mode) -- Singtel TV Box (NOT OK)
Singtel ONR -- TP-Link Archer AX72 Special AP mode -- Singtel TV Box (OK)
