I was in Boston last week so i Booked an appointment in the Apple Store for a 1-to-1 private demo of the Apple Vision Pro. As a VR enthusiast for the past decade, here are some of my thoughts:
- Pixel density is definitely the highest of the current consumer headsets I've experienced though it's not that big of a jump coming from the Meta Quest 2/3 and PlayStation VR2.
- It supports eyeball tracking and supposedly foveated rendering like the PlayStation VR2 which both the Quest 2 & 3 lacks. Tracks pretty accurate when using it to pinpoint objects.
- The augmented/mixed reality aspect is definitely much better than all the headsets I've tried. PlayStation VR2 & Quest 2 only supports black & white passthrough, Quest 3 colored passthrough is full of 'wobbly' artefacts when near the edge. Because of this, the gesture interface is fast & responsive
- screendoor effect is almost non-existent, solving a problem that plagues most current consumer headset.
- The fit with the default head strap is pretty terrible, almost as bad if not worse than the default quest 2 head strap. Due to the default head strap being just a fiber rubber strap with no weights, the entire thing is front heavy with no balance. This thing is gonna cause some stiff necks unless you fork out more money for a pro strap. I've used so many headsets through the years and this is like the bottom of the tier in terms of comfort. Apple definitely sacrificed comfort so that their headset can look 'hip'.
- the dangling battery pack looks ridiculous no matter how you look at it. This thing is definitely going back to the drawing board when or if there's a vision pro 2.
- panaromic photos and 3D videos performed as good as expected and definitely can be extremely impressive for new time VR/AR users but for VR veterans like myself already consuming such experiences for years, the media experience is up to par but not mind-blowing.
All in all, it's a decent first effort from apple and i will probably haul this hunk back to Singapore if not for the ridiculous asking price of USD3500. This thing is just too expensive for it to be accepted for the regular joe. Even an early adopter of new tech such as myself can't justify buying it as the current price, especially when there's barely an games for it. No beat saber, no resident evil 8 VR no half life alyx, no google earth VR. With its narrow use case of being an only 3D media consumption device or maybe a macbook centric extended workspace for silicon valley hipsters, the apple vision pro at its current iteration will be destined to be an even more niche product than existing VR/AR headsets.
A few things for apple to fix:
- incorporate the battery pack to the headset and bapance out the weight
- open the device so that it can interface with windows/android (highly unlikely to happen going by apple past behavior)
- the price.... seriously, not everyone can drop USD3500 for a niche device with such a narrow use case.
All in all, i came out of the demo feeling the same way exactly what i think it's going to be before I tried it. Strictly for consumers heavily invested in the apple ecosystem with too much money to spare.
Addendum: I saw a guy walking outside the streets with the Vision Pro...some of these silicon valley bros are out of their minds
