4K video playing problem

hey guys im having trouble playing 4k videos, is it something to do with hardware or software here? im using VLC player

my pc specs are -
CPU: AMD Phenom X 955 Black
GPU: AMD RX580
RAM: 8GB

Your CPU's outdated, if you're playing back h265 videos then even worse. 8GB of ram might also not cut it anymore depending on what else you're doing.

your gpu dont support 4k hevc.

Generally 2016 onwards hardware support decoding 4k using hardware. So u can get 6th gen intel onwards

Cheapest way to get 4k hevc videos to play is to buy a computer with j4105 cpu. If your budget is low, buying J4005 intel NUC cost less than $300 with ram and ssd.

You can also upgrade gpu only, and the cheapest one that supports is gtx 1030.

A value for money option is to get athlon 3000G cpu

Using this sample 120mbps 4K 10bit HEVC and DXVAChecker, it averaged around 85-100fps. This is with a 580, which is the same chip as your 470.

I have LAV Video installed, which is set to use DXVA2 (and thus GPU hardware decoding).

If you're using something like VLC, it's probably trying to decode it using your CPU.

Try something like MPC-BE (MPC-HC is abandoned). Install LAV if you haven't already.

choppy when playing, sometimes can see, most times cant

hmm how to check mediainfo?

i just know its a 4k video

hmm talking about upgrade, i'm also thinking between a qhd 144hz monitor vs 4k 60hz

i rarely play fps games, mostly mmo like wow or singleplayer adventure games. and quite often use my pc for watching tv/movies

rarely upgrade also, usually once every long while as perhaps u all can see

You could either overhaul whole system or offload to gpu for 4k encoding/decoding.

Search the vlc faq on how to enable gpu acceleration. Your rx580 should be up to the job.

have u tried installing Codec Pack Standard and use MPC-HC to play?
my video decode at 70% when playing http://downloads.4ksamples.com/videos/SES.Astra.UHD.Test.1.2160p.UHDTV.AAC.HEVC.x265-LiebeIst.mkv

i checked cpuid while running the 4k video - my gpu utilisation did increase to about 10-20% but my cpu utilisation is still 100%

so my cpu bottleneck even with gpu acceleration? or can i still do something thru software?

Is it a VP9 video? (Right click in MPC-HC -> Properties) Since your GPU is RX580.

There we go, mystery solved.

RX580's VP9 decoding is not full hardware decoding, and your CPU is too slow for it even with GPU acceleration.

Kind of sad considering even my Redmi Note 7 can full hardware 4k60p VP9

Just upgrade your CPU, and it should be fast enough to VP9 even with RX580
