That's what I have been thinking about. The thing is, although it has good prospects, I'm afraid I might lose interest in it halfway through the course. My interest in IB is probably another reason that is keeping me from going for accounting

I think filling the stomach is more important. I'm sure there are electives you can take for banking even if you are pursuing a degree in accounting.. So you can still pursue your interest, albeit not as your major. I would say if you want to do investment banking, make sure your grades are good.

I'm not sure about SMU, but if you are deciding between NTU accountancy or NTU business BnF, I would say go for NTU accountancy. If you are among the top students in year 1, they would allow you to pursue a second specialization in BnF as well. Then you will get the best of both worlds! From my understanding, year 1 NTU accounting & business take the same subjects, so you can still switch during this time, albeit more difficult if you want to switch from business to accounting. That is, provided you are interested in NTU, of course.

Hi, please do not stereotype. Please leave if u are just a pcw. If I'm only interested in making money I wouldn't have thought about this for so long

However, I still have aspirations to work in a bank as that has been my ambition. Moreover, I am also interested in investment banking.

If your end game is Investment Banking, I rather you just take the subject module u feel strongest in. I dunno what is ur major in poly.

Stick to that particular major in Uni. Then get ur First Class first + Join case competition or Some flagship programs e.g Biz Solution for NBS + Take up some extra Finance elective to wayang + Connections

I dunno about you, but if u dont have passion in the subjects u will burn out in year one in uni.

Sustain for 3 or 4 years in uni + lack of sleep + competition everyday + superficial relationships

How can one be passionate in those boring stuffs:s13::s13::s13:

Anyway ur family address also might help, connections ah connections

Plus now banking industry so cui, how to break in?

Best choice is u go apply ivy league or lagi best Wharton. Get in better then studying in SG.

Hard truth la

Silentears is a NBS Accountancy undergrad. I would say he knows a thing or two about the pitfalls prospective applicants fall into.
Ok but I don't think he should be trolling

Now it's 60-40 for me. 60 to accounting. I know what you mean and I don't know if I can work in a bank all the way for 30 years. I want to experience different industries too.

I've read quite a bit during my time in army but just afraid that IB is less resistant during recessions. I'm leaning slightly towards accounting now

I will suggest to do accounting as it is the core knowledge or skill require by all organisation. If you wish to pursue a career in banking sector accounting skill or CPA will be an advantage for to proceed in future.

If you are choosing NBS, Accounting > Business anytime. Simple reason, Acc is viewed as a better course in NBS and in year 1 the mods are 90% similar. If you realise accounting is not for you, you can drop to biz anytime but not vice versa. (You need at least a second upper to go up accountancy) Accounting skills are also more specialized compared to biz skills.

In recent years, NBS BnF have been under subscribe says a lot about how's student view that industry lately. IB is really hard to get in as well and I not sure if you are really certain what does it do. I can see where is slienttears coming from simply because too many people want to go IB as they think that is where the money is and the prestige that come along with it.

well i heard from CPA accountants being able to get out of the big 4 and start their own business but never really know any CFA personal doing something of their dreams.

at the end of the day, follow your interest.
if you are good in your interested area, money will flow naturally.

You have to know yourself first. if you are a people's person(like hanging out with people), then go for banking/ biz . If you can stand looking at numbers all day, then accounting is suitable for you. Accountancy work is rote, you follow standard procedures. Many of my friends make a career switch after a few years in accountancy as they couldnt stand the monotony.

Accounting is long hours with horrible pay... I see everyone say want to go into investment banking, but which part of investment banking?

End of the day, it doesn't matter what you major in, I see loads of engineering/history majors (people from a totally different background getting into IB) Most importantly, you'd have to come from a good uni, good grades and a good resume.

Doesn't matter what you study in school.. my degree had nothing to do with accounting yet here I am, slogging away for a big 4

Thats true, but IB is ultra competitive, since you compete with people from all majors

side note: if u can, skip the SQP and take the 5 day PAC workshop instead haha

You are one of the lucky last nbs batch to have that option. Now no more already.

2012 last batch for girls, 2014 last batch for ns-serving boys.
