Thinking of buying a new notebook PC. The two Taiwanese brands, Acer and Asus are the cheapest. Design looks good. But not too sure about quality and post sales support.

Appreciate advice from Acer / Asus PC users.

Acer is much like Dell, they assemble parts from 3rd parties. Asus do build some hardware like motherboards and graphics cards.

I have used both brands before and I can only recommend Acer if price is your main consideration. Asus if you want reliability.

Thank you for the feedback. Actually price is not my main consideration. However, if reliability and support is good enough, then price becomes a decision factor. If not, I'd rather pay a bit more to avoid frustration.

Just my experience, might not be wholly representative though. I had an Acer 4920G and now using ASUS K43Sv.

My Acer died after 3 years old. My Asus is now 3.5 years old, and still going strong. At around 2.5 years old, the Acer kept overheating and bsod. A small part of the motherboard tray melted due to the cpu heat. Well this is very likely due to wear and tear, but at least my Asus is doing better even though it is older at this stage.

The issue might be just exclusive to my unit (bad luck on my side), but I am not going to bet my money on another Acer laptop due to this. Just my 2 cents :p

I was using ASUS K45 and sold it out at $280 to a business man friend and it is 2.5 yrs old and it die off at 4 yrs old. Now using ASUS G750jx. Very stable and good.

Asus has its own fair share of issues. Look at the other asus threads.

Imo, it all boils down to luck.

Both of my current acer machines lasted more than 4 years and it is still working with 0 issues!
