Advice for first time dad

Hi all, my wife and I just did a self test yesterday and found out that’s she’s pregnant but being first timers we both very blur so any advice will be appreciated!

What’s the next step? We thought of going GP to confirm test results but some ppl advising shd go to gynae. How do I identify what’s a good gynae like and any recommendations? After that what do I need to do and look out for?

First trimester is still unstable, that is why old folk advice first 3 months dont tell anybody. Most self test kit quite accurate like condom. I would advice wait for a few days than go any GP to do a test again to be sure.

Go to gynae and do a blood test; it is most accurate test for pregnancy. As for gynae recommendation, your wife's friend should know some good Dr.

Your wife should start eating folate now. (not folic acid which is synthetic form). Can get it cheaply at local pharmacy or iherb. Remember to eat healthy, no vigorous exercise, no carrying heavy load, abstain sex for now, drink plenty of water and have plenty of rest.

When you get to O&G they scan to confirm pregnancy don’t need blood tests already unless you have hereditary background of some severe illness. Otherwise is just follow up monthly til delivery nothing unusual at all.

Ya they will say don't do anything like moving, hammering on stuffs in the house, move things must leave the house then can do etc. Mostly pantang things. but still better to believe

no point going gynae so early into the pregnancy as you wont be able to see anything anyway. suggest going only in the 6th to 7th week as you'll be able to see the sac & hopefully a heartbeat by then. if you are patient enough, can wait till 8th week - cfm can see heartbeat by then already.

you should also start looking/researching for good gynaes - imo, start off with which hospital you'd like to deliver at (govt/pvt?) before deciding on your gynae. if cost is an issue for you, you can go to a polyclinic to get referral & enjoy subsidized rates at govt hospitals.

Will the gynae be able to advise on the cost? I heard gynae is tied to certain hospitals so I should work backwards? Or if I wanna have the baby in Mt E I should search for docs that practice there? Or can they cross hosipital?

Some gynaes deliver at more than one hospital. You have to check with them. You can either choose hospital first, or gynae first. Some ppl think it’s impt that gynae is good & so will follow that gynae to whichever hospital he/she delivers at. Whereas others would prefer to read up on the various hospitals first & decide on the preferred hospital, before deciding on gynae. It’s entirely up to you & your wife. The biggest issue imo is the cost though as different hospitals’ charges are different. You can expect to pay up to 10k cash for ward A1 in gleneagles, but half or maybe even less than half of that for the same ward in KKH.

Most gynaes have a package which start from week 12/16/22 onwards. They will be able to advise you on their gynae consultation packages, delivery costs etc. But hospital charges you have to check with the hospital itself.

Any tips on questions to ask on a first gynae visit?

If you’d like, can clarify on what can/cannot be done - but gynaes usually just advise the usual, like no smoking, no alcohol, no raw food etc. But first visit normally nthg much, just do a scan to detect sac/heartbeat, ask some routine questions, then schedule you for next visit. Meanwhile you can slowly read up & think of what you need to find out from your gynae before the next visit, which would probably be scheduled in a mth’s time (this depends on different gynaes) if everything goes fine, ie if gynae sees no big problem with the pregnancy & your wife does not have any pre-existing illnesses which may affect the pregnancy in any way.

I went for monthly check ups from 7th week onwards all the way till 28th week. First trimester/Oscar scan at 12th week, then detailed scan (FA scan) at 20th week. There may be a lot of info for you to absorb at the moment but slowly read up lo, you have a lot of time from now till baby is born to do so

if you have no one to help in confinement month (like your mother in law, or your mother), guess you can start do some research on that if there is any good one.

A good confinement lady is important, especially both of you are new to parenthood. Good confinement lady usually will be booked early.

If you no pantang telling your frens before 3 months, you can also ask your frens around if got recommendation..
