Hi,

Looking to upgrade from my dated 6700k build. Looking for recommendations and advice for a gaming/browse internet pc

These are the parts I'm looking at currently:

i5 13600kf + Asus Prime-P wifi
WD SN770/850
Lian Li O11D
Deepcool Castle 360ex (existing part)
AX850 Titanium (existing part)

Just wanted to ask for advice:
Which is better between AMD and Intel value-wise currently?
Also DDR4 or DDR5? I've seen mixed comment, on the fence between futureproofing vs reusing current sticks

It would be great if you could also share more info on

1. Max Budget allocation
2. RAM capacity and speed
3. GPU model & monitor output resolution
4. Game plan to play in future or existing

More members will be able to access your requirements easier with additional information provided.

1. Max Budget allocation - 2k, willing to up budget if needed
2. RAM capacity and speed - Corsair Vengeance RGB pro 32GB (2x16GB) 3200Mhz C16
3. GPU model - Palit gtx1070
& monitor output resolution - 2x 34"(3440x1440) + 1x 24"(1080p)
4. Game plan to play in future or existing - Genshin Impact for now

looking at 13th gen core vs 5th gen ryzen, intel generally has better multicore performance while slipping ever so slightly behind for gaming at each tier (except the 13900k). if just gaming and dont want older gen, its honestly a toss up between the 7600 and 13600kf. 7600 combos are generally cheaper, but u have to spend more on faster ram for performance to not fall off a cliff. 13600kf combos are more expensive for ddr4 boards, but u have the option of reusing ram (which seems like what u plan on doing), and even if u decide on ddr5, u can skimp on ram as intel is not as sensitive to memory timings as much as amd and xmp kits are generally cheaper than expo kits locally.

honestly though, if ur not going to upgrade ur 1070, either of these options are way overkill. u can just get a cheap ryzen 5 5600 + basic b550 combo for like $400 and still get a healthy uplift from the 6700k.

I am planning to upgrade my gtx1070 sometime, just waiting for prices to stabilise (sold off 2080 super and 3070ti previously).

just mostly undecided between ddr5 and ddr4/ ryzen vs intel

Wondering how urgent you need to upgrade your PC? Do you have any intention to upgrade windows 11 as it seems your current system is not officially support windows 11.

So far for normal user both ddr4 and ddr5 is hard to tell the difference unless you are into tuning for lower latency system performance then ddr4 still have the advantage using your current kits with zen3 system for 1:1 Infinity fabric, Intel favor high speed ram but 3200 speed still doing well with 32GB.

Not many casual gamer know or will constantly monitoring game fps and 1% low which sometime it is unnecessary to upgrade higher spec new gen system, unless you are into this chasing for max fps or lower system latency category.

If you do not intend to upgrade your new system to windows 11 for next 3 to 5 years time or possible getting more busy with family and work for less gaming, then I suggest just upgrade for cpu+Mobo+nvme of zen3 5800x3d+b550 or i5-13600+b760 for less than $1k, and balance $1k go for GPU upgrade perhaps coming 4070 or 4060.

Personally using 5900x+3080 at 4k and i7-11700+1070 @ 1440p still able to play many game occasionally just need to manage expectations on graphics settings.

To be honest no point going for previous generation and thinking it's a good upgrade from a 4-5 yrs setup.

Your budget would allow at least AMD 7600 with a B650 mobo + good DDR5 memory like the Gskill DDR5 6000.

I would not bother to look back at older 5000 series set up.

i would assume ts is gaming @ 1440p, where cpu plays less of a role compared to 1080p, hence the 30% margin or so of the 7600 over the 5600 for eg that u see in cpu reviews (which are usually done at 1080p) will no doubt be smaller without factoring in gpu limitation. additionally, ts has the option of reusing decent ddr4, which means at the end of the day, zen 4 + b650 + fast 6000c30 or so ddr5 will be about twice as expensive as zen 3 + b550 with nowhere close to double the performance (keeping in mind ts' focus on value). budget also not say must use gao gao, if can get decent parts (which zen 3 most certainly still is for gaming and general use) and still have money saved, thats money that can be put into more important things too.

If he is going to use the new rig for long, going for a 7600 make more sense in term of support and upgrade path. Not to forget, he has a budget of >2K. Not my style of recommending a EOL platform considering that his budget totally allow him to get the current platform.

Let's compare Amazon singapore pricing.

5600 - 202
Asus Tuf B550 - 247
DDR4 3600 CL16 - 151
Total 600

7600 336
Asus Tuf B650 - 346
DDR5 6000 CL30 - 225
Total 907

S$300 diff for a current compared to a EOL platform. Still have S$1100. GTX1070 can run Genshin, i know because i have this GPU. NVMe always have promo in Amazon.sg. Seagate and WD have international warranty. GPU can wait for RTX4060Ti/RTX4070 release since GTX1070 can run genshin now.

Buy from SLS just factor in higher bundle pricing.

I don't know about you but if i save up my money and this is the budget i have, i will try to get the latest setup instead of going to get a EOL platform. Save money? I already allocated that budget. I rest my case and will agree with you. 5600 with B550 is more than enough then yes, it's more than enough. I'm old liao no more strength to debate. :s13: :s13:

if starting from scratch with new build i agree with u that with enough budget, no point going for last gen. but thats not entirely the case; if ts goes for the zen 3 upgrade, he can reuse his corsair ddr4, so actual cost is ~$450 which is half of the zen 4 equivalent like i mentioned. considering ts has already been on the (then flagship) 6700k for so long, and given how much of a leap zen 3 is over skylake, im not worried that a midrange part like the 5600 wouldnt serve ts well.

meanwhile me building my first pc in 2019 with x79 :s22:

If he wanna reuse his DDR4 i would suggest keeping to the 13600K. Next time if he need more power still can go to 13900K.

I went for 11700K series in a 12700K era, ultra regret.

13600k with a decent board that can handle it and not power limit it out of the box are at least $650 locally, and u still need to buy a cooler. a 13500 might make a better proposition under 600, but tbh raptor lake with ddr4 is not that big an uplift over zen 3.

Actually I'm playing genshin impact currently which isn't too graphics heavy. Mostly optimising for faster loading speed/ multitasking and future gaming (which is why gfx card isn't an urgency but I'd like the cpu to be decently good)

I also see alot of ryzen recommendations. I've picked up the i5-13600kf based on friend's reco. Based on what I read, the equivalent is 7700x which is more expensive? (correct me if I'm wrong!)

The key toss up for me is between ddr4 and ddr5 tbh. Ddr5 is better ram with prices on the decline whereas ddr4 I can reuse 3200 ram (or is it worth going for 3600?)

Couldve afforded i9 tbh but it's overkill for my usage and every gen nowadays seems to have better improvements (gone are the skylake days I guess?)

I think it is not too difficult to decide if you use the opportunity cost method consider if you do not upgrade to DDR5, this memory money allocated can help to upgrade which components better?

Could it be CPU, Motherboard, Cooler, Storage, Case, GPU and how much improvement it can bring to you, or if you use DDR5 what improvement you are expecting to see does the game give you smoother experience or higher fps if necessary?

Almost same spec CPU as yours, an i7 4790k, still using DDR3 1866mhz Rams.
