Hello,

First time building a pc, can some of you experts recommend a build.
Needs:
1)I'll be editing in Sony Vegas as a hobby(nothing major) and main issue is that I want to be able to preview my work real time without lags in video effects/transitions etc
2)I'll also be gaming on this pc and my requirements are med-high settings 1080p
Budget: Around 1.2k(let me know if this is reasonable for my needs)
Don't need any peripherals.

Also, my friend recommended me gtx970 and I understand there's a 1080 coming out soon which would cause a price drop. Any ideas on how big this drop would be? This would be a deciding factor for me as well.

Thank you all!

well im not sure if 1.2k is enough since u want sony vegas without lags.

Z97-K + i7 4790k - @605
Kingston Valueram DDR3 16GB(2X8GB) @94
Transcend SSD220S 480GB - @ 160+3 (lazada)
Toshiba 2TB - @97
Coasir 100R - @85
Superflower ledex 650w gold -@159

Total: $1203 (not inclusive of GPU)

Price quote from PCTheme
As for Gpu if u dun mind waiting, the drops will still depends on those shops and online seller, but if u want u can buy it in amazon (probably they will start selling it cheaply once after a few months when GTX 1070 is out. So overall u just have to wait for the time to come.

If u going for OC get a i7 4790k @657 and cpu cooler Cryorig H7 - @65

The base speed is already very high on the 4790k , even if maximum overclock you get 10% more only .... very limited ... the H7 is a single tower 120mm cooler, low pressure fan & only 3x 6mm heatpipe ... cannot tahan a hot chip like this -- no max overclock

Ah okay, thanks for the input. Assuming I want Sony Vegas to run without lag, what are the specs that you guys will recommend? Please quote me the price as well thanks appreciate it
Edit:Or is the suggested CPU sufficient? Open to more builds, would like to learn as much as possible!

Ah I see, well the CPU cooler I just find one that is good and seems cheap.

But do u mean that non k i7 is good enough?

But how much are u willing to go for? Beside that I'm not sure if u wanna OC or not. Lastly do u want a skylake(latest tech) build or haswell(last 2 gen below skylake) build.

the K chip base clock is few hundred Mhz higher than non K .... so there is merit in that ...
but I don't think worth the effort or cash trying to overclock it with a weak&overpriced cooler
just leave the K chip at stock speed ... it can turbo to 4.2ghz on 4 cores

Curious, what's your projected usage ratio when it comes to video v gaming? 50/50?

If vid is at least 50%, then you should go and research more on the requirements/limitations of Sony Vegas (whiehever version you are using), to find out if your upgrades will actually improve anything, before going further.

I'm not familiar with it, but just based on a 5-10 min google search, I've read some sources saying that SV is not optimized for modern GPUs? So just be aware that if you do get a decent mid-level GPU, it will probably serve you more for gaming, but may not improve your SV performance.

Dave,

I feel your pain for I just bought the 970 and all my renders are 40% slower than the 500 series.
It is interesting if I had a project that was a 15 minute render using the GTX 580 my timer would go up to 15 minutes. When I use the 970 card it goes all the way to 42 minutes than starts decreasing to a final render of 25 minutes.

from base of what u have shown us it seems like software have no optimization support for latest tech at all ???

or other driver issues?

edit: sorry after reading some post so what does the software wants more from gpu? CUDA or OpenGL?

Don't really get it either. Read another post saying better to go for AMD cos OpenCl support is better (can use new AMD cards), CUDA support only up to GTX500 series, lol. Something like that.

Choosing a Video Card for Sony Vegas and Sony Movie Studio – GPU Acceleration Explained

I have posted a new article to our website that covers what modern video cards work best for Sony Vegas Pro and Sony Movie Studio for GPU acceleration. This article is for versions 11, 12 and 13 of Sony Vegas Pro and Sony Movie Studio.

I have seen on some of the computer forum people asking what type of video card should they get for Sony Vegas Pro or Sony Movie Studio. Most of the time people are giving out advise based on the old information on the older video cards, expecting it to apply to the video cards we have today.

For example, when Sony first implemented GPU acceleration, the current line of video cards at that time were the NVIDIA GT/GTX500, GT/GTX400 and GT/GTX200. Also, included are the AMD HD 4000, HD 5000 and HD 6000 video cards.

These cards are not around anymore, except on the used market and things are different with today’s modern video cards.

Did you know there are two areas where GPU acceleration comes in. The first is timeline playback and the second is when you use the MainConcept AVC or Sony AVC encoder.

Sony Vegas Pro and Sony Movie Studio are based on using OpenCL. Both AMD and NVIDIA offer OpenCL support with their video cards. However, AMD has put a lot of effort into their implementation of OpenCL, which is why AMD video cards perform exceptionally well with Sony Vegas and Sony Movie Studio, along with other programs that use OpenCL.

Since NVIDIA is pushing their proprietary CUDA technology, they don’t put a whole lot of effort into OpenCL. It is not implemented well and it really shows when it comes to Sony Vegas and Sony Movie Studio.

Now some of you are going to say, that you can use CUDA with Sony Vegas Pro and Sony Movie Studio. Yes, I know that. But did you know it only works on the old NVIDIA GT/GTX500, GT/GTX400 and GT/GTX200 series of video cards? And, it only works with the MainConcept AVC encoder.

It’s true. CUDA does not work with today’s modern video cards from NVIDIA. The reason why is MainConcept hard coded which video cards it would support and they are the NVIDIA GT/GTX500, GT/GTX400 and GT/GTX200 series of video cards.

While I am not saying you can’t use NVIDIA video cards, you can, but the performance will not be anywhere near what you get with an AMD video card. A lot of people are unaware of this and they are telling people to use a NVIDIA card for CUDA support, when there is no more CUDA support for the newer NVIDIA graphics cards.

Take a few minutes and read this article: https://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/SonyVideoCards.htm

It has a ton of information in it and it will give you examples of some rendering tests I did with some NVIDIA and AMD video cards.

Original vegas software alrdy abt 1/4 of your budget liao. U using movie studio or really vegas?

From my pov if u r jus a hobbyist u dont even need to care abt the gpu aspect. My previous rig of 4790k @4.5.. can tank 1080p 60f editing but only up to 2 layers on premiere pro cc. Anything more than that, scrubbing on the timeline would stutter alrdy.

Normally what transitions do you apply to ur videos? Simple fading, or alot more complicated animations? And do you set multiple layering on your timeline to 'fuse' those effects?

Not sure how optimised vegas is but it is definitely not an optimal editing software choice unless u r using sony mirrorless or dslr.. it can tank all their file formats. Other than that plugin support is very weak compared to other editing softwares.

that means if he/she were to play and video editing for 50/50 rather get AMD card. so that he/she can have best of both worlds? :o

Hmm user wants to prevent render stutter during playback of video @original resolution in preview after all effects/transitions have been added on.. difficult for his budget and an amd card might better in terms of value.

I see this is really interesting and am learning a lot, thank you guys.

Using Vegas pro 13, and about 50/50 vid editing and gaming, effects/transitions can be multiple layers but only for small parts of videos in working on. I wouldn't mind a slight lag in this part of the timeline. Most of the time, about 2-3layers.

In that case, which AMD card would be most suitable?

With these requirements, what would be the rec build? Budget doesn't matter for now, willing to go above 1.2k but would obviously like to cut cost so would like to know what is the minimum I need to get to get the desired results.

Thank you all once again!

What is the export/encoding output file container?

H.264,MP4,1080p,30fps, full colour spectrum

Ok.. if you favour a faster export time, get a cpu with more cores & scrimp on the gpu. If you favour a less stuttering playback preview experience, go for a mid range gpu (400-500) and scrimp on the cpu.

Give and take for your budget, even if you stretch to 2k.

Well base on some replies that use r9 290, will be current 390(equivalent of 290, if u can't find 290 in the market). But I'm not sure if r9 380 or 380x will be fine for u?

Ditch Sony Vegas. Get the fastest 64-bit video editor in the market. PowerDirector :s12:!!!

A 2 1/2 hour M2TS video encoded in 24Mbps takes less than 3 hours to produce :D. If you use Intel QuickSync, the time is further reduced.

Yes power director is a very good entry lvl video editing software. Still upgrading and keeping it to work around with subtitles. Playing srt files along with it is so so easy. Upgrading to 14 ultimate costs only 70+ sing dollars with free photo director (mini lightroom). Can search online to use 10% coupon also.. no subscription too.. unlike moi cc ):
