Moreover I read that all non-domestic coach services on Penang island are now centralised at Sungei Nibong. Penang Sentral has become an integrated hub for KTM, non-domestic coach and ferry services but it is actually at Butterworth on the mainland.

Hi, first time visiting Penang. Would it be better to take the train or coach from KL? I read that the walk from Butterworth railway station to the ferry terminal in Penang is quite long, although it's connected via Penang Sentral. Travelling with an elderly person so trying to minimise very long walks with luggage.
Looking to stay in Georgetown, preferably near good food (not Gurney). Besides Cititel, any other hotels near good food? 3 to 4 star hotel is fine. I saw mentions of Kimberly Street and Chulia Street but can't find the specific posts already.

Stayed at Le Meridien in KL, just beside Sentral Train Station. In Sentral itself there is a coach operating to Penang if its an option for you. The coach company is called "Nice". 2 hour journey. Coach condition 4/10 though. but still it gets you to the destination. I enjoy bus rides.

Yup bus is +- about $30sgd two way. Own preference though. I love taking in the sights on the bus journey.

I think the beautiful sight is only crossing from mainland to the island, travelling on the bridge.
But why need 2 ways, you stay in KL?

no leh, NS hwy scenery from KL toward north are more beautiful
But from JB - KL boring, only palm plantations

I think the beautiful sight is only crossing from mainland to the island, travelling on the bridge.
But why need 2 ways, you stay in KL?

Either way is just as good, in my opinion, so long as you avoid visiting Genting on a weekend. For the leg between Singapore and Penang, you better fly. Between Singapore-Genting, and Genting-Penang, travel by coach is bearable at 5 hours each.

Oh, havn't try before. Last trip plan to go penang to Hat Yai, the bus journey should be exciting but change plan, since BKK ticket got promo.

Personally would prefer separating them, unless your kids are OK with the long coach rides from Penang to Genting and Genting back to Singapore. Would rather lump Genting with a KL trip so that you don't spend a lot of time on coach rides with kids.

Genting would also be my preferred last stop for a trip, so that the holiday will end off on a higher note with cooling weather and premium food/activities.

KL yes got more shopping. Penang also nothing to shop bah.

Anyway I was thinking more from a kid's perspective. Genting will be a more fun place for them. If go Genting first later go KL/ Penang they will be more rowdy coz to them these places will be more boring

KL I don't know, long time never go.
Penang Escape enough to play whole day for kids, still got so many farms to visit.

like Escape room, 3D, ghost house, etc

Or, get them to the beach to splash around.

more adventurous, hike to Penang Hill. Can do it from Botanical gardens area (Moon Gate).

Penang has always been a good family getaway for 3 to 4 days.

The museums are a little sub-standard but it is worth for 1-2 hours of entertainment each. So museum hopping can easily just fill up 1 day of fun.

Didn't know can hike up to Penang Hill....then why so many still taking the Train Funicular Railway?
