going to penang in april. staying at sunway hotel Georgetown. Any place must go or anything must eat nearby there?

Lots of food to eat nearby Sunway Hotel. Walking distance from Sunway Hotel, about 1 minute there is this New Lane Street food. More than 30 stalls of food to explore. The food that not to be missed are the Fried Kuey Teow outside of the first coffee shop, the Batu Maung satay, Chee Cheong Fun,Porridge and Oh Chien.

Across the road at Macalister Road which is just opposite BSN Bank, there is this Penang Famous Dim Sum that you could not miss. Further down, there are few chinese kopitiam and one food court: Sin Kim San where you can find lots of food stalls. There is also a mamak restaurant if you would like to try the Nasi Kandar,Roti Prata,Teh Tarik,Maggi Goreng.

There are 5 banks around there too!10 minutes walk away, you can find the expensive but famous Sister's Fried Kuey Teow and Penang Curry Mee. Over at the other side, which is the right side on Sunway Hotel, you can find the Penang Times Square mall. There, you can have your 24 hours McDonald's fast food and also clubbing at Soju Club.

If you love to try some local breakfast, you can walk to Lorong Kinta, where there is a daily morning market which is about 10 mins walk, slightly further down from Penang Times Square, you can find lots of local food. Alot of delicious food that are worth to try over there.

For confectioneries, Ban Heang Tau Sar Pneah is just beside Sunway Hotel if you intend to buy some back for your families, colleagues or relatives. In short, you won't die of hunger staying in Sunway Hotel. There are food around there 24-7!

so far, I only seen it in penang, can't find at all in SG

if you go penang to buy, please please don't buy from coffee tree tourist shop. the price is twice as expensive as outside. you can easily find it in normal super markets such as giant or any supermarket in the malls

if you see it at tourist spots, don't pay more than rm$20 per packet of 15 sachets, a few dollars extra is okie in my opinion for the extra conveninence.

Hi, I will be travelling to Penang in Mid April. Staying in a guest house You Le Yuan @ Love Lane.

Can advise if that area is accessible to nice streets food or I need to take Taxi from there to other area?

Also I watch a TV program from Taiwan recommending a Food street place called Santou Street where there are lots of Street food. Can advise if it is true?

Hi,

Nearby Love Lane there are few places to explore some nice street food but you need to walk. Anyway, that area does not have as many delicious food as that you can find at Macalister Road which I mentioned in my post earlier. There,it is definitely a food heaven!

When you are at Love Lane, you can walk down to Chulia St for dinner at night where there are lots of stalls selling food. It is to your left if you were to walk towards Chulia St from Love Lane. The food recommended there is definately the Wantan Noodles and Satay. If you like Lok-Lok,you can try too. Just 5 mins walk from Love Lane.

Another option is to walk to Red garden Food Paradise, a food court style food garden, which might not be the street food that you are looking for. It is located at Lebuh Leith or Leith St. There you can enjoy your food with some performance by local and Filipino bands and singers. There are many choices of food but the price is slightly more expensive than those stalls located at Chulia St. Oh ya, to walk there you need to take about 10-15 mins.

In the afternoon, there is a stall selling Chicken rice which is very famous among the local Penangites. It is located at Chulia St and the stall only sells the chicken rice from around 10am-2 pm! In the morning if you would like to have your breakfast, you can also explore the Morning market which is located at Lebuh Carnavon just 5 mins walk from Love Lane. From there, turn left and cross the road to Chulia St.There is a lane there which is Lebuh Carnavon.

Santou Street or the locals most famously called it Swatow Lane is a street where you can find the famous New World Park. There are many stalls inside to explore in New World Park Food Centre. You can try the 'Loh Mee' (My favourite), 'Bak Chang', 'Or Kueh','Fried Rice', 'Fried Kuey Teow' and also the not-to-be-missed fruits and dessert stall! You can see even the bees love their fruits! Over there, if you want to explore the local food, it is suitable only to go there in during lunch as the local food section is close for dinner. From your guesthouse in Love Lane to New World Park takes about 20-25 mins drive. You got to take a cab there as it doesn't make sense to walk from your place to Swatow Lane.

At night, it is the turn for the other side of the New World Park Food Centre which is the one facing Burma Road to be happening. But if your preference is to explore local street food, then I shall not explain more.

Hi, you are welcome. The two old twin grandma that u mentioned i guess they are the ones I knew. They are so famous in Penang but I don't think they sell Laksa. They are actually selling Curry Mee. In Penang, that kind of Thai style laksa that u mentioned is actually called Curry Mee.

Here is the link. They should be the old twin grandmas that u mentioned right?

I was having a simple lunch at Air Itam wet market due to heavy rain. We were sitting with some locals who are staying at Air Itam, interestingly they told us about these 2 grandmas and they dun understand why their curry mee so many people queuing to eat. but then again, they also said the famous air itam assam laksa is so so to them, they prefer their own vendor across the road right where we are siting.

I think penang hawkers too many hidden dragons and tigers, it is all up to personal taste, but I find the parting comments of the locals very adept, "you research and travel all the way here, even if people tell you not nice, you will still try 1 bowl just to justify making your way over. :s13:"

it is right behind the famous air item assam laksa stall (3min walk?) which is at the foot of kek lok si temple.

If you drive from george town with light traffic, maybe 30 mins or lesser? if stuck in jam, could take you up to 1 hr or more.

That area is kinda of a traffic bottle neck during peak hours.

Chehjin, u like very familiar with Penang. But I certainly agree with u and the locals that u mentioned on this phrase:
"interestingly they told us about these 2 grandmas and they dun understand why their curry mee so many people queuing to eat. but then again, they also said the famous air itam assam laksa is so so to them, they prefer their own vendor across the road right where we are sitting".

Like I've mentioned in one of my post before this, the famous air itam assam laksa is REALLY so so to me and us,the local Penangites. Too commercial now and the gravy is quite watery. I shy away from the stall years ago. Used to be my No.1 laksa in Penang and the one me and my mum love alot when I was young. There is really a stall that sells so much more delicious laksa just across the road but it is VERY EXCLUSIVE as the stall ONLY opens on Saturday & Sunday.
