Advice on SSD

Good afternoon IT geeks,

Im a noob in IT and computer related stuffs. However, im interested to get a 128GB SSD but not sure which brand is good and dunno how to install into the laptop.

I am currently using a Lenovo U330p ultrabook. Checked the other threads it cost around SGD120-140 .


Should i wait till warranty is over then upgrade?

Which retailer / shop provide services to change HDD to SSD and how much does it cost?

Are all kinds of ram able to work all any processor? and is it better to purchase in SG or from amazon?

Haswell 4th gen i5
500Gb HDD with 8 gb SSD ( its called a SSHD)
intel hd graphic card

Normal usage for biz use such as word processing and web browsing.

You would need to find laptop rams, not desktop rams...

you can ownself open up the chasis, find your hdd and swap urself. Not worth going to a shop to do it. Up to you to either wait till warranty up or do it now.

Win8 64-bit? Im not sure on laptop rams, but it isnt that chim... can go check pricelist. make sure the mhz are the same, and if its ddr2 or ddr3.

Ram prices are on the high, if u can tahan till it drops, it would be good.

By the way I am using Strontium HAWK SSD and so far it is performing good for me..

For 128gb ssd, can consider plextor m5s 128gb at $13x. AFAIK, 128gb ssd not worth to get online since diff is like $10-20 or lesser. Anything above 250gb will have bigger savings.

im using win 8 64 bit. how to check ram clock speed and DDR(number)? i go window system only show processor clock speed.

I mean it really depends on your budget for the SSD. Plextor M5 Pro Xtreme is a good drive and at 7mm thickness, it should fit your Ultrabook. Do note some SSDs are 9.5mm thick and likely not be able to fit an Ultrabook. You can check out in Sim Lim from the shop Tradepac. Otherwise, the hybrid drive should be good enough too.

As for ram, first you should check how many ram slots are there for your Ultrabook. Some have 2 and some single slot. Based on your usage pattern, I reckon 4gb might be sufficient. Typically, Windows should soak up about 1.5 to 1.8GB of ram. If you have all those unused software/ games preinstalled by Lenovo, do consider uninstalling them.

1 thing to note though... normal SSD using SATA3 works better than mSATA.. if can get and fit in a normal SSD, then go for it... unless your laptop mobo only supports msata.

Guess will just hold my bullet till i have more cash. Now is slowly collecting more info.

Will be installing the prog to check my ram clock speed . btw my laptop have only 1 ram slot.

I would advise you to go to www.crucial.com to check for all compatibility issues and purchase your parts from there. At least parts suggested from them will work 100%. If not, they refund you.
