Where did you carry out the test? If you test in the weak signal area, you may encounter things like this : acceptable download speed but very slow upload speed.

Reason:
1) AX3600 TX power is high, it has good range, so there is no problem from AX3600 to your test device (good download speed)
2) But the TX power of your device is weak and can not overcome the barriers so there is a problem from your device to AX3600 (slow upload speed)

If this is the case you can to get another Xiaomi to form a mesh (eg: Xiaomi AX1800).

I am currently using 2 low end Asus router ac1200g+. One as router the other as AP. Both are connected thru Lan. The AP has more device connected to it. So I'm thinking of changing to a better one. (Tbh, my current set up is working fine)

Do you think changing my ap to this Xiaomi router is good?

Yes. Just buy the China version of AX3600 and you should see some improvement in terms of coverage and speed. Of course the improvement depends on the client as well. If you have AX Client, the improvement may be very significant. If you have 2*2 AC 80MHz Client (majority of the mobile phones and laptops), the improvement will be less significant.

Asus RT-AC1200G+ is rated AC1200 (2*2 AC 80MHz, up to 866Mbps on the 5GHz band).

Any hopes for those who bought the global version to maximise the range of the router? I am not too well verse into codings, but can try if there are no other ways. China firmware have increase the range for me but created a new bug which slows down my network.

My current setup is M1 ONT, Linksys EA7500v2 as main router. Planning to get Xiaomi AX3600. The expert here is recommending AX3600 as AP. Is the security as main concern?
Just learned and setup Pihole as running default setting. Here is my thought.
1. AX3600 as main router + Pihole, Is this okay to address the security concerns.
2. AX3600 as AP, EA7500 as main router. or
3. AX3600 as AP, Old Asus AC66U as main router.

Any recommendations?

If you are concern with security, then you should be looking at pfsense + IPS/IDS/UTM rather than looking at all these home routers.

What is a UTM Appliance?

Once you setup your pfsense, use these AX3600 as AP.

It will depend on individual needs but I tend to think Xiaomi AX3600 is better to be used as an AP than as the main router because of the basic exposed firmware UI features, not because of security concern.

In terms of web UI features, RT-AC66U may still be better than EA7500 and AX3600. So probably you can go with Option 3, you can even disable AC66U wireless function.

Basically Xiaomi chooses to dumb down the AX3600 UI features for ease of use. It may be good enough for you already, if that is the case, option 1 is okay.

But if you are willing to get your hands dirty and use the SSH to bypass the web UI /app limitations, then actually you can achieve many more advanced features as well. And option 1 can be a perfect solution.

I've read the past 10 pages, and am still unclear on this: Is it possible to unlock channels above 64 on the China set and China fw?

Once this is confirmed, then i'll work out the rest from the guides.

thanks.

Read the posts by porky_88 one more time and get your hand dirty with SSH, especially his exchange with ronsky.

No matter it is China Set or Global set, based on what I read (especially post 822), the best is to edit the country code to SG and then flash the global FW (so you get English web UI), you will get the channels you want and you get Tx power complaint to IMDA regulations. 30dBm is available on CH149 to CH165.

Some useful posts:
Enable SSH and bdata edit: Post #821
Why TX power is low for Global Set with Global ROM: Post $820
Availble channel and tx power limit using country code SG: Post #822
How to change regdom and verify country code: Post #862 and #863

Anyway, just read the posts by porky_88 from Page 55 to Page 59, and gets your hand dirty with SSH, you will be fine.

But for average users, just get the China set and use it as it is, or flash the global FW to get English UI. If you happen to get the Global Set (better not to buy), flash the China FW and then the Tx power will improve.
