For aerial repellents, my recommendation is just to close everything and smoke it out ie make it lethal for a good few hours (use 2 or even more vaporizers for max effect), ventilate it in good wind for 1-5 mins depending on wind strength ventilation effect. Close doors and windows......enjoy.

Is the electric switched turned on when you found mosquitoes right next to the repellent? Is it the Baygon one?

How small area does it work? Half area of hdb bedroom? One hdb bedroom?

Is the electric switched turned on when you found mosquitoes right next to the repellent? Yes

Is it the Baygon one? ARS, Mortein, Sheildtox. mosquito appeal right in front of the repellent even after 1 hour. Baygon is slightly better, mosquito appeal 2 meters away... but hey mosquito still appear. hahaha

Baygon, ARS, Mortein, Sheildtox are tested in the same small service yard of mine. each tested for some time even before all the zika hoohaa.

Baygon, ARS. both use Prallethrin.
Mortein, Sheildtox belong to same company. They use allethrin.

My feel is that vapour repellent do help to reduce no of mozzies but maybe some already get used to the smell.

For spray on products with DEET, Picaridin, or other plant based ones. So far their effectiveness are questionable.... I'm not saying that they are useless. Just that some mozzies already got used to the smell and still bites despite these products being applied.

It's time for scientist to invent new products.

I think the smell of Baygon/Shieldtox/Mortein should be ok for HEPA (not that i recommend this coz really nobody shd be staying in an enclosed room with the aerial repellents). The smell is really some perfume in the solvents.

For the Sawyer brand DEET and Picaridin....i think smell wise is ok for HEPA.

But for those Tiger Balm with citronella, camphor, xxxx oils, the smell is really too great. I think worse than going to hawker centre eat zhi char stick to shirt smell. :s13:

Good enough for any smoke out/closed windows lethal ops!! *thumbs up*

In fact if you wanna kill all of them within 2hrs, 5-7 shd be more than enough for MBR + power strip to gun them all simultaneously. :s13:

Good video, watch this for aerial repellents. OFF! Clip ON does not really work. (or the effect is too small)
Not even in DEAD CALM windless conditions.

From what i read is that there would still be bites, it is quite reduced. For plant based ones is really just 0.5 hrs - 1 hr effectiveness, and the smell is really power. And also really need to apply on each and every surface, including areas in front of the ears. Miss any spot, even 98% DEET also useless. The vid below shows that, just a small spot missed = gone

Here's a nice vid on applied-on repellent

Consumer products testing. (shd be quite applicable to us) The concentration needs to hit a little bit on the higher side also, though sometimes you might have heard that the concentration is not repellency, but more on duration of prection. So those 7-10% DEET might not cut it in a hotspot usage, but pretty ok for regular areas not in a hotspot?

This one users need to gauge themselves and usage pattern liao. Some might need 30 mins protection for that 45 min run to NTUC, some need 2-4hrs.

Note the more aggressive aedes vs culex protection time

hahahahha...

yeah i'm thinking of using cream instead of spray.... spray really difficult to cover most area

Off Clip-on uses metoflurin. Research here says 40X more potent than d-allethrin.

And Off clip-pn uses a 30% formulation 45ml bottle.

But not sure why the above video is so lousy against the allethrin mat. But of coz, the Thermacell is using a butane burner, so not sure what's the rate of emission of the insecticide. Maybe much faster. The socket plug-ins are 5W. The butane burner at least relatively speaking 50-100W?

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14745180

Tested against the Culex (also found here in SG), but it should be v similar to Aedes aegypti and Aedes albocitus. And i believe it should both be in terms of repellency and also lethality.

(1R)-trans-Norchrysanthemic acid fluorobenzyl esters are synthesized and their structure-activity relationships are discussed. These esters show outstanding insecticidal activity against mosquitoes. In particular, the 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-methoxymethylbenzyl analog (metofluthrin) exhibits the highest potency, being approximately forty times as potent as d-allethrin in a mosquito coil formulation when tested against southern house mosquitoes (Culex quinquefasciatus). Metofluthrin also exhibits a significant vapor action at room temperature.

Previous test bt Prallethrin vs Allethrin. Allerthin at twice the concentration.
Lethal also.

They claim that the same concentration lotion gives additional 10% protection time vs spray. Not sure if that's true or not.

Or just use your spray and spray onto the hands, then spread it out.

One more thing, there is a reason why i prefer to kill mozzies in your house instead of just repelling it. It is because through experience, i found that in my area for my kids, the mozzies just bit for 1 night, then 1-2 days never bite. I suspect that they flew to other houses (proven that they do travel around esp the Aedes agyepti) for feeding and then flew back.
Anyway, this is also how dengue and mosquito-related diseases spread, they do fly around and are not totally static in one room.

So with any chance you have got, kill it and not just merely repel it with aerial repellents. You would be doing your neighbours a favour as well, and if they also do so as well they are doing everyone in the neighbourhood a favour.
If you just repel for that few hours, you will still run the risk of getting bitten immediately right after you switch off the device be it in the same room or in an "untreated" room.

You could do spray insecticides also esp useful for those dark cervices etc, but i reckon it's not an option for those with kids, coz they do touch the surfaces etc. And how the heck does one fumigate the room with spray insecticides daily as a practical option, that i really cannot understand.

Vapour is muuucch better and cleaner. Only thing is that for plug-in vapour devices, you'd need probably > 1 device + long enough duration to achieve lethal doses.

I think it is relatively safe to leave it on when you go to work and come back 9-10hrs later so that you can achieve lethal concentrations. Air it for just a min or 2 if it's windy and close everything, enjoy your AC and AP later. Just ensure no flammable materials around if in the rare case it does slightly short out or something.

Do you mean on 5 to 7 vaporisers together same time all plug into a powerstrip inside a bedroom (close windows and doors) for 2 hours will kill all mosquitoes in the bedroom?

The 5 to 7 vaporisers all at the same plug same area is it ok? Or need to separate place at different areas of the room?

Not 100% sure, but from the previous image i have posted with regards to allethrin and parellthrin, it should be sufficient to kill.

Just locate that few vaporise in the room ok liao. From our testing with 2015 haze, the vapour would diffuse throughout the whole room in just a matter of minutes.

Do you apply repellent to fingers and palm, face, cheeks, forehead, ear? I find that these areas like seldom mosquito bite. I do not like apply these areas and face since it near to lips eyes mouth (some repellent have caution on these lips eye mouth). Fingers and palm need to touch things, if there is repellent I think a bit of repellent will be on anything that I touch. Not sure.

The guy in the video eye area got itchy suddenly and he scratched with his fingers that he applied repellent. Will repellent get to the eyes or not?

Bro super365 asked a good question regarding if Prallethrin (Baygon plug-in vaporiser) is the best. Baygon is using 1.6% Prallethrin. Above d-trans Allethrin is 2% and 2.6% respectively for Shieldtox and Mortein.

This study documented the mortality timings for the mozzies. (ie close door/windows smoke out session)

http://www.icup.org.uk/reports/icup041.pdf

d-allerthrin is at double the concentration of Prallerthrin.

K5kmJyP.jpg

I found a good article with regards to metoflurin (used in the OFF Clip-on repeller as 30% concentration.

Metoflurin has very good volatility at room temperature, better than the other ****rin chemicals.

Note, in this room, the mortality with the 1 x mosquito coil (d-allethrin) is not high. This is because the room has opened windows. This kind of finding is not surprising, as with bro tilverdyn's previous findings.

Hence you'd need to close the room's doors and windows preferably windows are the new type with rubber strips (I believe 95% of the windows out there are of this new type anyway), other than sustaining the duration.

Summary : The findings found that metofluthrin does not actually repel or expel, despite being so much more potent. But it does kill them buggers extremely well, even in a ventilated setting and had a spill-over effect to the neighbouring room.

This agrees with the above video test in the real world, the Off Clip-on does not repel while the d-allethrin ThermaCell repels out in the open.
But actually the metofluthrin in Off Clip-on is much more lethal in a room with windows opened setting.

Since metofluthrin is quite volatile in our room temps, it can work even without the fan. With a fan + enclosed room with closed windows/doors, mortality effect would be very fast, i'd guess within an hour or so?

You could even just buy the refills and not the fan if you want.

Read the article yourself to have a feel on how it works.

I think 1 x clip-on with 1 set of rechargeable battery can work for a 5-room HDB totally enclosed during going to work time..

Cost should be ok. Each device is just $8.90. But need to plug-up the bottle when not in use, coz it's much more volatile. It says use within 14 days of opening, but i guess that's if it's just left there opened, screwed-in and left unplugged.

For the plug-ins they still need to heat it, but for long term > 1 month of storage you'd still need to put the cap back on i guess.

$8.90 device
http://www.fairprice.com.sg/webapp/...Id=133086&urlRequestType=Base&catalogId=10051

6.30 for 2 refills
http://www.fairprice.com.sg/webapp/...ryId=13722&top_category=13507&catalogId=10051

Just 12 hours of protection upon opening. Each refill also 12-hrs only.

Wait - made a mistake, the device contains just 46 mg. 30% of that 46mg is metofluthrin, so that's 13.6mg metofluthrin)? That's very little and very expensive to use coz it's very volatile.

For a bottle of Shieldtox/Mortein, it's $4.95 for a bottle of d-allethrin 43ml and 2.6%, making 0.86 ml of pure allethrin. Specific gravity: 1.005 -1.015. So basically that is 860mg of pure allethrin.

Actually you can work backwards a little. The NCBI article i posted earlier noted that metofluthrin is 40X more effective than d-allethrin.

So 13.6mg x 40 = 544mg, it's equivalent in KO power to 544mg of d-allethrin.

Very effective in terms of mottality, but damn expensive for real-life use.

I don't really have use for applied-on repellents now, but last time when we had to use it, we do apply on every single exposed surface. Ears and even like up to 2 inches on the face from the neck/ears. We do apply on the forehead, but do that if you are not expecting the perspire profusely.

Don't apply on the nose though.

We do wash hands, so that area would be sort of unprotected. But if you are on a trek in Sungei Buloh and not expecting to touch food, then feel free to apply as well?

What do you use to repel mosquito when you go out? Go out also never apply repellent?
