HAZE SITUATION UPDATE (15 SEPTEMBER, 9AM)

Singapore, 15 September 2014 – We experienced elevated levels of PM2.5 from 10pm last night to 7am this morning, affecting mainly the Western Region of Singapore. The 24-hr PSI entered the Unhealthy range for that region at 6am. As at 9am today, the 24-hr PSI is 105 in the Western Region of Singapore, and 78 to 84 for the other regions.

2 The elevated levels of PM2.5 experienced are most likely due to the hotspots in South Sumatra detected over the past three to four days. Smoke haze has been observed to the south of Singapore. Although the number of hotspots detected yesterday was lower than the previous day, this was an incomplete hotspot count due to partial satellite coverage. Given the continued dry weather in southern Sumatra, we can expect the hotspots to persist and the 24-PSI for Singapore to fluctuate between the high-end of the Moderate range and the low-end of the Unhealthy range for the rest of the day.

3 The health impact of haze is dependent on one’s health status, the PSI level, and the length and intensity of outdoor activity. Reducing outdoor activities and physical exertion can help limit the ill effects from haze exposure. Given the air quality forecast for the next 24 hours, healthy persons should reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion. The elderly, pregnant women and children should minimise prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion, while those with chronic lung or heart disease should avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion. Persons who are not feeling well, especially the elderly and children, and those with chronic heart or lung conditions, should seek medical attention.

My Sharp KC840 is 46dB i think. Yeah, that's about the max i'd go.

Come to think of it, it's ard there with the 50250. The 50250 shifts quite a bit more air than 300m3/h. 50250 (250) is 250 cu ft/min = 424m3/h.
50150 = 150 cu ft/min.

Actually the Samsung AX40 is still somewhat loud for light sleepers. Light sleepers gotta wear ear plugs if they want max fan speed.

Either that or they get a big Hitachi A7000 and switch in in medium speed after blasting in MAX for 30 mins. (42dB at 270m3/h flowrate in medium speed)

Even if you ignore the stock HEPA-10 filter in the Sharp, the A28 does not even have activated charcoal.

Then it's 48W for the A28 vs 34W for the AX40.
And the airflow is 168 m3/h vs 323m3/h.
Yes, you read that correct. 40% higher power consumption but flows at only half the airflow of the Samsung.

And you get 2 units of Samsung AX40 and these 2 in operation still end up being a wee bit quieter than 1 unit of Sharp A28.

And Samsung AX40 on qoo10. The 501 has the benefit of 1 additional filter. But now the "expensive replacement HEPA filter" problem has been solved with Amazon/Taobao. Just need to DIY size it down a bit to fit as it's not a direct replacement but it's definitely worth it as you do it once a year.

Ok, keep it simple here.

If you want it now, 501 still available @ 299 in OG, Robinsons Orchard, Best Denki etc.

But the Samsung AX40 is fairly more powerful, has a bigger HEPA filter, extra filters can be purchased from qoo10 (purchase in advance, HEPA does not expire). You probably will get your air purifier in 1 week's time, maybe by then no haze liao, maybe still got haze.

PS. There is no issue for Samsung AX40's 220Vac 60Hz rating being used in Singapore's 240Vac 50Hz. I have been using it since April nightly and also weekend's daytime.
It is using an electronic power supply, not old-school transformer which may overheat etc. The PSU casing runs pretty cool to the touch.
The motor is 300Vdc.

Ok, its like this. The samsung ax40 has a small negative in the sense that it only has high speed (323 m3/hr airflow) and low speed (v v silent). Auto speed works like low speed in real life...and Sleep speed is too low an output to be of any use.

The samsung ax40 in high speed sounds like its slightly more silent than the kc840 in turbo ion shower mode.

So how it may work in your case is that turn it on for 1 hr in high speed to scrub the air, then select low speed for sleeping.

Must remember that it is blowing some 323m^3/hr in high speed. The kc840 is about 216m^3/hr.
