I'll teach you guys how to save more with the AX40.

Every year, the haze months run for about 4 months. You can use 1 x original HEPA for 8 months hazy periods, so that's 2 years lifespan per original HEPA filter.

Non hazy period of 8 months, you can use this Taobao filter. Don't have to customise (so no need to type in Chinese to converse with the seller), just trim the part that runs along the pleat. Then the top part can just roll up the plastic packaging and plug the gap. It would work, trust me, I have measured.

Same, 4 months for the filter. So 1 year use 2pc.
RMB 29.90 per piece. Just buy 6 or 8 in 1 shot ba.

This would drop the airflow by about 35% max (it's more like 30% actually, actual measurement with my anemometer). So it becomes 210 m3/hr. It would also be slightly more silent, and suck less electricity due to slower motor rotation with the added resistance (as measured current draw with a multimeter). 210m3/hr is good for 14.5m2 room with 5 ACH, shd be just nice for MBR during non hazy months.

With regards to the funny smell on new AP, perhaps the LG AP Manual offer some answer:
• Is the odor generated in the initial phase after purchasing the product?

• It is a smell of activated carbon. It disappears after
1~2 weeks after product operation. It is a smell of
activated carbon (charcoal) harmless to human
body. (It is the same phenomenon as a new car.)

Just get the frame if you can afford it, not much diff. But with/without frame very little difference, since you'd be using the rolled up plastic packaging to stuff the corners.

Less airflow coz less filter depth dimension. Less deep pleat, less surface area (imagine if you pull and unroll the whole filter, like an accordion)

I'd advise you to get the 30 x 30, since if you get 30 x 40 then it becomes way more difficult to cut for one of the dimension. You ownself try to figure it out.

1cm less filter makes no difference.

AX40 is 31 x 28cm.

I bought this, cut it up and stuffed into my AX40 but it has a weird chemical smell so I stopped using it. The smell was quite bad as compared to the TCM smell of the TB custom made HEPA

I saw at amazon.co.jp that the sharp purifier is also very cheap.

The KC-D70 is very similar to the local KC-D60E but it only cost ¥ 17,780. Together with an approx shipping cost of $100+, it's about 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the local model

Of cos, there's the voltage problem, but it can be solved using a transformer. Warranty is another issue, but dep on your luck.

First off, transformers are inefficient. Secondly, you need a good quality transformer to be able to run it 24/7. Thirdly, higher risk of fire.

Personally, I try to avoid as much as possible.

Yeah pretty sure it's not the stuffing because I tried with other materials including tissue paper and it still had the weird smell

I think both the DIY cut filter and customised filter got its own filter media smell. Run it for 24hrs, it would go away.

Even the Fellowes True HEPA filter (Made in South Korea) from Amazon also got its own smell.

The Honeywell H type filter has less of a smell.

Anyway, it would go away 100% totally after ~ 2448hrs of run time.
