Two observations on the AX40 after used for more than a week.

1. fan speed on night mode is too low. Does not seem much of use.

2. dust and smoke sensors are not sensitive.

Just my 2 cents worth of comments.

Actually I think night mode works......

Provided you sleep in the toilet or store room.

I dont subscribe to what Fview's review saying that the air filter usage is basically the foot print of the fan.

If you remove the filter from your AP, you will notice an air gap between the filter element and the fan grill. This is like a airbox you find in a car engine system, to equalise the air pressure across the cylinders.

So unless you say the fan grill is directly next to the filter element, then yes, the filter surface is not fully utilized. The effect will be like what some bros here are doing or the air cannon (putting a square hepa filter one a circular fan).
There's a 2cm gap distance between the hepa and fan

At night I usually turn on Auto (fan speed higher than low and night mode imo) and cover the lights with something, although last night I only had AC on, and my room was back to its usual darkness the way I like it

those using iqair xiaomi balmuda and other AP with similar layouts, is the filter surface fully utilized? unlike those like ax40

Pretty much. But more important is the seal. For conventional (flat) air purifiers, the fan sucks in the filter a bit, so there's a sort of vacuum effect.

For the 360 degree types the Balmuda and Xiaomi have a mechanism to lift the filter (because gravity) and create a seal.

IQAir has the arms that work like a tiffin carrier to press all the sections together and seal them tightly.

Just looking at the surface of the filters, the dirt seems to be distributed quite evenly. Maybe slightly dirtier at the top nearer to the fan. Difference is tiny.

I suspect that the somewhat surprising readings from the Austin Air (also 360 filter) are because the filter is very heavy and sits on the base which is just a metal plate. So gaps form and some ambient air gets through.

Sorry for this noob question. Which is the correct way the position the AX40 in a living room. Facing the direction of a slightly open window (too warm to keep it close)? and which side of the AP should be facing the window?. The side where the Hepa Filter was installed?.

ideally rear face the window, since air is sucked in from the rear, and cleaned air is pushed through the top, directed to the front.

For any ap with night/low mode...best to let ap scrub the air in high/jet for some time b4 changing to 'night' mode. I do that with mine...auto scrub for an hr b4 it goes into auto mode. Electro static does work...nasa uses it but on a bigger scale, for commercial ones i guess compliment with hepa and good for putting right next to bed. Having ap too near to bed tend to draw cool air fr ac away. For those with cool catalyst filter which converts voc to carbon, best to have a snake plant in your bed room to convert it to O2 at night

You meant cat hide inside?

Pen, pencil, sticks, paper clips down inside.

Then the AP gg

Esp when you have toddler at home, dont know what destruction they can do.

Side Note: Maybe we should have an AP party, all the different models/brand at one place and compare.
