Yes...its an ok machine with the biggest HEPA filter size ard so that it'd come in useful if you customise the china HEPAs from taobao. In fact i measured a 5% slight increase in airflow speed when i changed out the original LG HEPA to the customised taobao ones. (Original depth is 37mm, customised taobao is 45mm). It can take a max of 45mm if you still want to use the netting prefilter.

Mine is display set from HN lah....everything good as new and used denatured alcohol (careful..can ruin plastic surfaces, test first) to clean.
269 can buy. Qoo10 cheapest is 278.

I rem last time quite long time ago, Best denki got one maroon Sharp KC-860 which is a v powerful unit that was going for 299 only. Display set but condition average only. All these are workhorses and keep going for at least 10yrs..and are energy efficient. Matters a lot if used daily for 10yrs.

Thanks bro, I am now seriously considering between this model and Sharp. :)

Which model? Dont go for the humidifying model, the humidifying rate is not high performance and over time mold and bacteria will grow inside and it's not as easy to wash vs the piezoelectric humidifiers pictured below...additional mantainence, for the same airflow performance, the dimensions are bigger than non-humidifying models.

The mist type probably performs at a few times the rate of these air purifier cum humidifier models.

Sharp A80 is a very good AP if you can afford it.

Sharp A80
Air Flow (Max / Med / Low) (m3/hour) = 480 / 300 / 120
Noise Level (Max / Med / Low) (dBA) = 53 / 41 / 23
Power Input (Max / Med / Low) (Watts) = 75/20/5
$459 at Goh Ah Bee etc.

LG 459
Airflow MAX = 318 m3/h
Noise level 47dB
40W
$269

Both HEPA size (volume) are around the same.

LG PSR459 @ 47dB is too loud for sleeping. Already at the threshold for watching TV. Same airflow as the Sharp A80 at same airflow while drawing half the power + 41dB is good enough even for the lightest sleepers.

There are 4 speeds on the LG. 47dB is the max. Throttle down 1 speed and it goes very silent, I'd estimate about 195m3/hr which is still good enough for a MBR whole night operation. Based on personal measurement of the airflow speed in Speed 4 (22kph) and Speed 3 (13.5kph). Scrub the air at Max speed for 20 mins during hazier days, more than good enough to maintain sub 1 ug/m3 PM2.5 after that.

Sharp A80 is way too powerful in a HDB MBR for folks without medical conditoons or even for infants. But if you can afford it....
That said, you can nearly buy 2 units of LG but occupy more vol/footprint.
2 units can also give you protection over a wider area (eg 1 bedroom, 1 living room) compared to 1 big ass efficient unit.

40W and 20W.
20W difference.
Cost per year is 20/1000 * 12hr *365 * $0.24 = S$87 per yr diff.
2 years nightly 12hrs operation can cover back.

** Note : Then again, 300m3/hr airflow vs 195 m3/hr is very little diff in a HDB masterbedroom daily usage, I'd expect the LG to be in the 20+W consumption @ 195m3/hr. But if you are in a large landed property room, then yes the comparison gets more meaningful as you'd need the 300 m3/hr performance.

Conclusion : Size the AP properly and run it long-term in its sweet spot. Same as the car.

I have the intention of buying an air purifier. I have a baby on the way, and due to renovation of the new estate and with the possibility of haze given recent weather changes, I hope this investment is worthwhile.

Therefore, I would like to seek some recommendations by you guys.

I understand there is a basic necessity such as Hepa and carbon where it can helped to clean the air. Also, I understand that it has to be ozone free. Any recommendations?

Also some questions.

- Do I place it in the living room and it will help purify the air in the entire home?

- Do I have to on it as long as I am at home?

Looking at a budget within S$500.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Kendoarts,

With your slightly higher budget, if you just want a 1 unit solution, then get the Sharp A80.

Q : - Do I place it in the living room and it will help purify the air in the entire home?
A : You can place it in the living room and it has just enough horsepower to clean the living room and bedroom. This is provided that you switch on the aircon for the 2 rooms and place a fan at the doorway to circulate air between the MBR and living room. Other rooms, you need to close the doors.
Or you can move the unit around the various rooms.

Q : Do I have to on it as long as I am at home?
A : No. Switch it on in Medium or High depending on your needs. Low is not very useful.

Replacement filters are available from Best Denki. If not, it's widely available on taobao. It's the FZ-A420HF, but do confirm the dimensions first with the seller. http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.71.a5nl3r&id=23339280327&ns=1&abbucket=10#detail

BTW, is your house newly renovated with new funitures/customised cabinetry?

Thanks. After reading your post and discussion with my wife, we have decided on the LG as it is for our HDB MBR. Besides the size, cost is also another major factor, and $250+ is within our expectation, considering that this is the first time we are getting an AP. Contacted the seller, and pending on his reply to some of my queries.

Again thanks very much for your input. :)

Kendoarts,

BTW, is your house newly renovated with new funitures/customised cabinetry?

Kendoarts, anyway the horsepower of the Sharp A80 is sufficient for regular days. Should the 3-hr PSI rise above 75, you might want to increase the filtration by adding 3M Filtrete electrostatic filters to both your living room and bedroom(s). Add to either the aircon FCU, in which you'd have to ensure that its clean/unclogged and blowing sufficient airflow to prevent the metal fins from freezing, or you can add to the back of your fan.

Add more 3M Filtrete as long as the PSI rises, you'd have everything covered for the next 3 years which is the really critical development stage in your kid's life. (it goes up to 6 years old)

Can buy from Taobao which is much cheaper ($4 per each aircon use) or SG retail DIY shops/NTUC etc. (approx. $17). The links and tests done by me are all in the past 5 pages.

Great, seriously there is no need to get heck loads of filtration for regular folks, or even for infants. You can just slap on the HEPA in front of the fan or some 3M Filtrete electrostatic filters, all very scalable. You'd have all bases covered whatever the PM2.5 concentration is .

Your wife is expecting, actually she needs the filtration right now.
But you don't have to rush to buy the AP, can consider the 3M Filtrete, which lasts for 4 weeks in local conditions.

Even as we speak right now, place in the East, South, West are very slightly hazy, PM2.5 concentrations of 40+ and 51 max for East from 0600-0700h. 51 ug/m3 corresponds to a 1-hr PSI of 95 and AQI 139.
40 ug/m3 is PSI 83, AQI 112.

There are several biological reasons why young children may be more susceptible to air pollution's effects. Children's lungs, immune system, and brain are immature at birth and continue to rapidly develop until approximately age 6, and the cell layer lining the inside of the respiratory tract is particularly permeable during this age period. Compared to adults, children also have a larger lung surface area in relation to their body weight, and breathe 50% more air per kilogram of body weight. The process of early growth and development is important for the health of the child in general, and therefore may also be a critical time when air pollution exposures can have lasting effects on future health.

Actually yesterday evening 6+ PM can already see the viz dropping, but NEA 1-hr reading doesn't even begin to rise till 9pm. I really stunned like vegetable when I see north side 7pm reading is 9um/m3.

Looks like a mini/mild inversion layer.

I am looking at the hotspot maps and Fire Danger Rating maps (FFMC). The whole region wet. Could it be temperature inversion related and car exhaust fumes (JB, Batam, SG area)? Remember, Batam and JB esp Batam...have stuff that are super duper polluting. In China, one of such vehicle is as polluting as 500,000 normal certified vehicles.

And also, 50 ug/m3 of such pollution is significantly worse than 50ug/m3 from biomass haze.

Chanced upon this 2013 conference presentation:
Singapore’s Approach to Air Pollution Control and Challenges Faced During the Jun 2013 Haze
http://phconference.org/yr2013/Downloads/Slides/Day2/Mrs Indrani C Rajaram.pdf

Second slide already pattern zuay.....Bejing air quality actually looks good vs ours which is slightly better. :D. No PM2.5 even though its already available there.
We know that is untrue.

Passing a laser particle counter to another bro later, your wifi data logging one is good also. Thats the best bet for those with such a need.

Seems like Sharp A80 is the choice. Just wondering, nobody mention Novita, is there a reason why?

You mentioned about adding the filters? I'm noob at this so I hope you can enlighten me. You mean on top of the filter that comes along with the air purifier, I can still add additional filter if necessary/required.

Yes, I just shifted into a newly renovated home for 2 months, while I have neighbours renovating their homes at this moment. And with a newborn on the way, therefore, the need to invest in the air purifier.

Found it, the 4 types of Filtrete selling in Taiwan and China. The purple is the highest grade. Blue has activated charcoal in it.

Renovation construction dust is probably coarse type PM10 or bigger.
Is definitely a risk in your new house, I have experienced before. Everyday wipe once also not enough due to neighbours. My 7 blocks got a total of 1878 households renovating at the same type. :s13:

Remember, your baby is the one staying at home 24/7, maybe you'd have parents coming over to take care for the first few months. Parents go to work in Grade AAA offices in MB, Somerset/Orchard, Suntec, Shenton Way, AHUs all equipped with F9 grade filters that would clean the air to safe 24-hr levels even if outside were PSI 300.

http://www.hse.gov.uk/construction/faq-dust.htm

Novita, a bit expensive lah. Sometimes there are offer. Novita is a local brand but some models are China factory taobao models + 加工 and using better motors etc.

You don't have to add filters. I am talking about utilising the Sharp A80, but you probably would want coverage for living room PLUS bedroom coz it's not feasible to get holed up in a room for > 50% of the day/night. So you would need some auxillary filtration. 3M Filtrete is the affordable answer.
Picture this, you have an extremely powerful 28k BTU/hr aircon in the living room. You master bedroom would be cold, but just a bit. Would be nice if you have another mini aircon that's 3000 btu/hr inside + some fan to circulate the air from the living room to bedroom.

NEA and ST is keeping pretty mum this year round with regards to haze forecast compared to last year.

Try to leave a bit of gap in the doors/windows in the room that your baby is in, to prevent formaldehyde build up due to new furnitures. This places additional performance demands on your air purifier, so a Sharp A80 + 3M Filtrete would definitely be good.
