for such high flow rate I rather you get 2 smaller ones.

for redundancy, 1 spoil due got 1 and issues with air circulations.

having 2 means you can stick both at each end of the room/house to spread the load.

No 2 x AX60 no tok. :s12::s22:

But seriously, replacement filter cost is an issue. The customised TB filters are not to the original filter performance, though 60mm depth would get the airflow up.

In this regard, Xiaomi and Mfresh are great. Their filters measure great as well for airflow.

Just qurious, why would any unit, whether it is aircond or fan have problem (overheat?) when there is restriction of airflow?

agree. that's why some china brands are really viable if you want to use them for the long run.

my sharp HEPA filter just uplorry that $110 compared to xiaomi $40 after coupons.

now my xiaomi has become my primary ap due to lower running cost using original filters.

Cooling efficiency aside (the power consumption of the compressor stays about the same) It's more of coil freeze. Expensive repair if it does gets spoiled. For healthy coils that are cleared of dust, it's usually ok. But in reality, I dare say 80% are not healthy in Singapore.

How much filter replacement. Liking at a unit for my parents living room

Best is still go carousell/gumtree and get the cheapies. :s22:

Living room, both are ok, there isn't a BIG difference in real life.

I remember gunning 1 piece of LG PS-R459 (200m3/hr med speed), 1pc LG PS-S209 (180) and 1pc Midea KJ30FE (probably around 280 m3/hr in Low speed) non-stop during that Hari Raya Period which went into hazardous zone and the most important thing to do is to keep any door/window closed without any gap. That's 660 m3/hr of horsepower.

Even with the louvre window pane for the yard-kitchen closed, my kitchen registered 70 ug/m3 on the B4 while living room was 40-ish.
MIL forgot to close the yard door + no wind at all coz all other interfaces are closed tightly, whole house shot up to 100-ish.

All my normal windows and yard door got rubber sealing, during thunderstorm if closed tightly got no woo-woo sound, leave a very slight gap and you can heart the loud whistle. Confirm tight, only gaps are main door and yard louvre windows pane.

323 vs 439 m3/hr 7 minutes difference 1000 ug/m3 -> 1 ug/m3

Double filter replacement price...like the castor wheels too.

Think developed for cn market only?

I think most sharp models have castor wheel to roll side ways.
My A50 comes with casters.

P.S. Someone gonna screw for posting image intensive review.

Just now I tested my sharp a28 in MBR after airing my room. In 10 min it brought down raw reading levels from 180 to 70. Not bad I should say. In 20 min from 180 to 30. (After that ended experiment, didn't check any further as B5 no power already. I suspect it will do down further given time)

And this is using my ultra sensitive B5 which need to divide by more than two to normalize.

Of course I need to say that I upgraded the original filter to a commoner hepa filter from TB.

I do think it's sufficient and value for money, especially since I bought it last year at $99

You have to run the A28 on high in order to get the rated CADR, if you operate it on Medium or Low, the CADR might not achieve enough Air Changes/Hour to keep up with door opening/closing(toilet/drink break). It's rather noisy too as compared to Samsung or even Xiaomi

Introduction

Xiaomi better known for its low cost mobile phone launched its own air purifier December 9, 2014 at half the price of traditional purifier in the same. Though not available for sale through Singapore’s Xiaomi sales channel, it can be bought through taobao or local xiaomi importers.

Unboxing

G6mayEQ.jpg

The air purifier comes in a traditional xiaomi brown box.

KsSzjQI.jpg

The accompany instructions are very basic. What is surprising is the purifier comes packed with a dust cover.

Ifiiryt.jpg

Great for long term storage if you plan to throw away box after the haze period.

The foot print of this purifier is smaller to other purifier in this class(next to a Sharp A50); taking up only 260 by 260mm of size, about the same size as an A4 size paper as advertised on the its product website.

Note: There was a piece of paper inside the air intake that I didn’t notice.

The purifier

oDftI7u.jpg

The xiaomi air purifier is strikingly sleek and strikingly similar to Balmuda air engine though more feature rich and cheaper. The control on the xiaomi air purifier is very basic.

Cliss38.jpg
Y2RjgXL.jpg

The button at the top to turn the purifier on/off and choose 3 different modes, auto, night, jet. An ambient light sensor is next button which will adjust the brightness of the lights according ambient light condition. The button at the back to turn off the lights (great for bedrooms) or reset (Long press power button + reset). The sharp IR PM sensor is located just underneath this button which can remove for cleaning. This sensor is good for PM0.5 (see http://www.howmuchsnow.com/arduino/airquality/)

Thfkgro.jpg

My purifier came with an IEC UK 3 pin power cable as I bought from xiaomi importer(who value added), purifier from taobao is expected to come with China Type I plug you will need a travel adapter to convert to UK 3 pin.

I find that the power cable is a bit too short. I also find connection between the cable plug and the purifier rather loose, contact can be lost simply by moving the purifier around.

Safety feature

hratmUb.jpg

Built-in safety features will automatically shutdown the air purifier when the air filter cover is removed, or the top fan guard is removed. A push notification alert will also be sent to the connected phone informing the users that the purifier has been tinkered. Good feature if you have itchy fingers around.

The filter

The purifier comes equipped with a standard cylindrical H11(or E11) filter rated efficiency at 99.3% (better than H11 but worse than H12). Unlike other conventional flat filter from typical brands, cylindrical filter allow air to flow more efficiently and reduce the airflow disruption from fan or aircon. I do notice the airflow of my standing fan is greatly when I place my Sharp A50 next it compared to the xiaomi.

UTHpjmv.jpg

The filter is of 3 layer construct, the outer prefilter mesh to block hair and fibre, the heap filter and followed by a removable activated carbon filter.

There are reports of new filters emitting sour smell which I also experienced. The same smell from my brand new A50 HEPA filter. The xiaomi filter smell went away after about 200 hours of usage. Alternatively you can remove the carbon filter if you do not need it, as the smell originates from this filter.

AGOzMoI.jpg

There is also a high density activated carbon filter which come at higher cost ($10-$15 more) which basically the same filter with a different activated carbon filter. It is said to better also removing VOCs from new furniture. The effectiveness of this has not been tested.

Operation (without App and/or wifi)

Just simply plug the purifier to the power socket turn on the power. Wait a few second for the purifier to “boot up” with a short beep and you are ready to power up the purifier by a press of the top button.

Only 3 modes are available through this method, auto, night and jet. Jet mode will put the purifier in turbo speed for 15 minutes before kicking back to auto, great for initial deep cleaning of air. For 3 other modes of low, medium, high, you will need the app to set the purifier. To turn off just hold the power until there is a long beep.

The App

All the talk about smart home and internet of things, I thought were bullcrap until I got this purifier. Xiaomi air purifier allows control of the air purifier through its smart home app.

Download this app through the QR code label at the top of the purifier. The smart home app is available for iOS and android. The app is in chinese though but translated app can be found in miui forum.

Setting up can be a little confusing and tedious due to the lack of documentation but once connected the app allows you control the air purifier remote as long as the purifier is connected internet enable wifi.

AcWz6bt.png

The main page shows the list of xiaomi smart device registered to your micloud account.

T4CCWtj.png

Going in gives you access to different modes of the purifier, on/off, auto, night, jet mode and display the level of pm2.5 and air quality advisory. However do note the air quality advisory is based on China’s AQI which is a lot stringent that USA EPA standards. The auto mode follows the China standard which is too low for sensitive people. I do not recommend people to use this, the best would be manually choose the mode, be it medium or high depending on conditions.

kUq4Z8l.png

Side scrolling given you access to 3 other modes that is not available physically on the purifier, low, medium and high mode.

kqFvszd.png

Tapping the centre of circle will display the life remaining of the filter, this is purely based on purifier runtime and can only be used as guide.

aGPzc2D.png

The setting page allows scheduling(requires wifi connection to be on), blue sky notification(to open windows when outside air is better; does not work in Singapore), on/off purifier lights and sounds(a feature that missing in many brands and real time detection which is real time monitoring of air quality in the house.

I find that the static air at house and static air stuck within air purifier will cause real time monitoring to be under reported, so this feature is not useful. In order for the sensor to be accurate, on the purifier at auto and allow the air to circulate for about a minute, the true air quality figure will show up after some air circulation.

Performance and noise

Unlike conventional air purifier of back/front intake, top exhaust, xiaomi employs a bottom intake, top exhaust layout. Together with a small impeller at the top with mixes filtered air with ambient air, this layout reduce the chance of short circuit whereby the air purifier taking in clean air it had just purified. This decreases performance due to poor air circulation.

The inherent small foot print of the purifier is also its greatest weakness. How much air a fan can push depends on the fan diameter and the fan speed(rpm). If you limit the size of the fan (in this the purifier) the only way to increase air flow is to increase fan speed(rpm) and creates a lot of noise.

This is the noise data compared to my Sharp A50.
All noise taken @ 1m distance

Xiaomi, Jet, High, Med, Low, Night.
Noise (dbA): 61, 54, 46, 44, 43
Flowrate m3/h: 406, 271*, 174*, 93*, 68*
*estimated

Sharp A50, High, Med, Low
Noise (dbA): 50, 44, 41
Flowrate m3/h: 306, 216, 60 (Published Spec)
For comparison I just measured my vacuum cleaner: Bosch 2000W GL-30
73dbA @ 1m at max speed.

This Xiaomi purifier is loud, but not as loud as what people have exaggerated like it is as loud as a vacuum cleaner.

As such here are my recommendations for use at different speed:

Jet Mode (auto switch to auto after 15 minutes)
For temporary usage everywhere in the house, great for precleaning large space when you are not home, or clean individual room after airing.

High speed mode
Too loud for bedroom or study room but is ok for living room. Looks great in the living room as well.

Medium speed mode
Not too loud for bedroom and study room, very very light sleepers might have issues.

Low/Auto speed mode
Good for bedroom and study room under less hazy days (AQI<150)

Night mode
Don’t bother, too low an airflow to effect any changes in air quality.

Pricing

The xiaomi purifier cost $250-$290 depending on where you buy from, filters are pricing at $45 for standard, $55 for high density at qoo10 before coupons. Definitely a steal compared to my Sharp A50 (machine: $459, hepa filter: $109).

At this price bracket, all local distributed brands cannot fight the Xiaomi. The comparable ones are the Samsung AX40(<$300 from qoo10), Baomi and the Mfresh M8808A. Very few purifiers can sell at this and give this sort of performance.

Conclusion

The Xiaomi air purifier jet mode with CADR 406m3/h which can be remotely start is the main selling point. Before having this xiaomi, every time I reached home, I have to continue to wear my N95 mask, set my Sharp A50 at full speed for a good 10-15 minutes before the air quality reaches acceptable level.

Now, 10 minutes before I reach home, I would switch on my Xiaomi air purifier to jet mode. Once I am home, I would just simply remove my N95 mask and walk around my house like a free man without the effective of leaking nose and sore throat.

The Xiaomi is not without its drawbacks, I wished it could be a bit less noiser, I wish I could switch the speed to low, med, high without using the app and I wish I can switch the auto speed threshold to kick in earlier.

Still, at end of the day, the benefits together with the low life cycle cost of changing its filter, the Xiaomi has dislodged my Sharp A50 to become my primary air purifier in my house. The A50 kept aside as a backup, secondary air purifier when conditions worsen.

I tot it's SGD298 everything in, that them when I got it......

999 unit price. add RMB80 for shunfeng (optional, but recommended).
235 4PX to SIN.

Total 1314. Add 3% TB charge and then 2.5% CC forex = 1387.

SGD 305 now current exchange rate.

It could be SGD285 if you don't need shunfeng go with its free shipping, maybe it's 中通 or 圆通。

My speedpost uncle knows me, coz I get iherb, AMZ as well. He's an ok guy. Your mileage may vary, coz some speedpost folks may be !@%@#$.

4PX - Transrush is extremely gentle. I have not heard of issues.

Oh, your m8088a needs transformer? Or it comes with local 3 pin plug?
