I've been on an Alaska cruise. Go for a balcony cabin, nothing
beats enjoying the fresh air and Alaskan scenery from the comfort of your bed.:D If you go in June, daylight hours are v long, still bright late at night and sun doesn't seem to set.

Lots of activities to do in the ports, Juneau, Ketchikan etc, can go fishing, or take a small float plane excursion.

Inside cabin can be as cheap as US$1000 pp or even lower including their port tax for 7 days cruise. Balcony cabin add maybe 50% more. Airfare however can be expensive as most cruises start from Vancouver or Seattle, and there are seldom good offers for these 2 cities.

I also went to tour West Coast also as part of same trip, but if just take the cruise portion plus airfare, is about S$2.5-3k per person. This excludes the in-port optional excursions like the float plane ride, which is about another S$500 ea.

Best deals if you book direct from cruise company in US or online travel agents. Not all cruise companies accept non-US online booking through their US agents, think NCL and Celebrity are ok.

I did an Alaska cruise a few years ago from Seattle.
The prices were really good then as there was a recession and the cruise line cut prices by quite a bit.

U have to get a balcony room as the outside scenery is fantastic.
Pay a little more but definitely get a balcony cabin.

One morning, we saw Orca whales swimming near the ship.

Also be sure to bring a warm jacket as it can get cold in Alaska in the early hours/night.
It was actually cold and rainy when the ship went up close to the glacier.

It was an extremely relaxing week.
Definitely recommend it for people who are stressed out! :)

Your starting/ending port will be either Seattle or Vancouver.
You can budget a few days as well in your port city for sightseeing.

Hi hisashiburi,

Agree that balcony is a must, especially for first time visitors.
Nothing beats waking up in the morning to such beautiful scenery.:s12:

We did a one way trip that starts from Vancouver and ends at Whittier followed by a 3 day land tour to Fairbanks. :)

Hi ceecookie,

It depends if you want a particular cabin.
For us, we wanted a starboard side (RHS of ship) balcony cabin for our north bound trip, thus we booked quite early in march 2012 for our sep cruise. In fact, we have to settle for a cabin which is quite in front as most of the starboard side cabins have been booked.

If u not too particular on which side or are ok to settle for a inside cabin, you may want to book nearer the dates and monitor for possible price slashes near the sailings when some people give up their cabins. :s22:

Thanks. My parents are interested in alaskan cruise next year, but rather than opting for the usual ones departing from Vancouver or Seattle they want to visit Niagara Fall and from there somehow cruise to Alaska.
Im not sure if that is even possible :s22:

Hi ceecookie,

It's possible.

I just googled. There are flights from buffalo airport (niagara falls) to anchorage airport.
Around 10 to 11 hrs though with 1 or 2 stop overs.
You can then take the south bound cruise from anchorage (Whittier) to Seattle or Vancouver.

Niagara Falls is a very nice place too.
We visited it last year.
You may want to check out our blog for posts on it.
