Hi Alaskan travellers, just wondering, is it possible to see the northern lights during the cruise? which periods are the best to go if the main objective is the northern lights? Thanks for any info!

Hi scholes25,

There are dedicated Northern lights tours in Alaska from November to march if you want to be almost 100% sure to see it.

However, if u are on an Alaska cruise, the best opportunity will be to take a end sep cruise like us and all the way to fairbanks for the best chance. Although we didn't get to see it though even when we were at Fairbanks on 25 sep.

Hope that helps in your planning! :)

On another note, we have just update our blog with a posting on the dinner menu that we had on our first day on diamond princess for potential alaska cruisers. :)

TommyGreen...

We had the same 1st on-board purchase - the cruise companion guidebook. The other thing that I bought from the cruise is the full set of DVDs for that cruise. Usually, you could just get the Glacier Bay one only, but well, since it came in a package, I bought the package (yes, just once, and the most expensive cave in I did, hahahaha).

Hi alpc,

The cruise companion guide book is a MUST buy! Well worthy the price :)

We got the full set of DVDs too!

Love your blog. You are amazingly detailed with all your posts.
Envious that you are able to do that.

Make me miss Alaska. We went back this year in June on the Diamond Princess
from Anchorage to Vancouver. We have booked again to go back in June 2013.
Can't wait!!!

TommyGreen, I don't recall going for the naturalist presentation. Ha ha! But I have to check my diary if I ever did - I know I went for the talk by the 1st female Iditarod champion (whose name just slip from my mind).

stuckintinysg, saw your blog, you have travel a lot as well. You are going back to Alaska again?!?! Since you have done the south-bound route, I supposed you are doing the north-bound this time?

Then again, I guess I am the same, I am trying to see if I can head back to Arctic area to catch the northern lights in 2013 (was in Finland, Jan this year).

Thanks TommyGreen & alpc...
I'm lucky that I got the chance to travel alot..partly due to (as my name suggest)
i can't stand SG!! That's why the hubby and I travel overseas alot, esp this name.
My blog has been neglected and I wanted to write more on my alaska trip,
but I've been too busy travelling, partly because we are relocating back to the UK,
so I've been travelling every 2 weeks (UK, then NZ then UK next week)
for househunting purposes, so no time to write my blog :p

Will probably have to change the name from stuckintinysg to nolongerstuckintinysg :s13:

Alpc: Yes I will be doing the northbound this time finishing in Anchorage, then can rent a car and explore around and go to Denali.

We hope to go back to Tromso in 2013 winter since we will be in UK, going to Tromso will
be easier to catch the lights another time. It was spectacular and once is not enough :p
