Hey guys! I can see that most of you are rather happy with your Kindle PW. I'm rather excited about purchasing an e-reader for myself too!
However, I'm considering between Kindle PW, and the newest Kindle (Kindle 5). Anyone knows any other differences other than it having the build in light? Such as the dictionary option, and the time it takes to complete the book, etc.
Hope someone would be able to help me make up my mind. Thanks in advanced!
Been using my pw ever since my kindle 5 went bonkers on me a couple of weeks back. Sometimes still miss the kindle 5.
Here is my take
Kindle 5 has physical page turn buttons, a home button, a back button, keyboard button and menu button which to me is the main reason why I love the k5. There's no need to touch the screen to flip pages, access menu, type or anything. Leaves the screen free from any smudges or blemishes. While reading a book, my hand is usually positioned such my fingers are on a page turn button where if needed to turn the page forward all I had to do was depress the button without much pressure. N also it was the most comfortable position for me. Don't have to lift my finger to touch the screen or move any of my fingers at all.
The pw is a touch screen device except for the tiny on/off button at the bottom so everything is done via the screen. But because it is a touch screen device, typing on the pw is a lot easier. The pw screen is such that you don't really need the screen protector as it's pretty resilient against blemishes. That's not to say that it can't get dirty, it can if you've been eating chocolates and what not. For me, while reading on a pw, my hand is positioned such that my thumb is either hovering just above the screen or at the side and touching the screen to flip the page forward. Maybe others have a better way to hold it but that's the most comfortable for me. Here I prefer the physical page turn buttons as to me it is a lot more seamless when turning pages.
I like the wake/sleep function of the Smart Cover even if I have to swipe to unlock after flipping the cover open. I like it because I can just flip the cover close if I have to attend to something urgent unlike the k5 where I have to switch it off then close the cover or close the cover and wait for it to go to sleep by itself. Don't like to waste the battery.
I don't really see the difference in the fonts. To me both look the same. The pw is not crisper than the k5. Maybe I'm just blind
The k5 with a cover is slightly smaller than the pw and it fits very nicely in my berm pockets leaving my hands free and also minimizes the possibility of it slipping through my fingers. The pw with a cover does not fit into some of my berms while I have to force it into the others. But that's not a big thing for me as it's quite rare that I don't carry a bag and I rarely take public transport.
Way before I ever thought of getting a kindle, I had installed reading lamps on my wall in my bedroom so that I can read while in bed but ever since I had to read with the pw my wife thanked me for not disturbing her sleep as she is a light sleeper and the reading lamp disturbs her quite a bit. Tried reading with an iPad but after 15 mins of reading, my eyes get really tired because of the glare no matter how low I set the brightness level to. But the light from the pw does not disturb my wife and I can continue reading in complete darkness without my eyes getting tired. At the right setting, you don't have to keep adjusting your pw for different lighting situations.
The dictionary works pretty well on both the pw and k5 with side loaded books. The k5 does not have the x ray nor the reading progress. Btw looks like the X-ray function does not work that well with side loaded books
Right now, I'll keep on reading with the pw but only because it has a light and the reading progress option
Hope that helps.
The best will be if amazon can combine the both. A pw with physical page turn buttons
Sorry for the long post.
