thinking 1700 or the 1900x.

If 1700 is either i go for Crosshair or Crosshair Extreme.

If 1900x, is either Gaming Pro Carbon or the see if got Asus offering.

Too atas. And totally overkill for my needs.

Threadripper is cut-down epyc. It has a lot of PCIe lanes. But the CCX penalty will be on 4 dies, 8 modules if u look at 1900x.

Ryzen 7 is 1 die, 2 module only. But of course if SLI / CFX is 8x lane.

Get Ryzen 7 will do, unless u doing some heavy computation that requires a lot of CPU threads. If only gaming, simple 6-core 12-thread processor can already handle well.

And if going for the 64-lane pcie3.0 lanes on threadripper, no point really. As long as u gaming, pcie3.0 x16 and pcie3.0 x8 difference only by 1fps (tried that out previously). Unless u really have so many pcie devices or have devices that need the full x16 bandwidth.

Just do it! Lol.

Im still thinking whether should i go for TR or just use AM4. The only reason i would buy TR would be the 8 slots of rams and 64 pcie lanes given on every processor. Unlike intel giving limited pcie lanes when buying such an expensive cpu.

Another thing to consider, TR definitely not so fast to find waterblocks.

Decisions decisions decisions.....

Don't need to think just go with... Thread Ripper. :D

Yeah, I'm going to wait a bit first. Wait for the waterblocks and let things stabilise a bit more first - new bioses etc.

Not really satisfied with the range of motherboards out right now as well, see if Asus comes out with more boards. :s12:

That is the thing that set me thinking for a few days to plan for my next upcoming build with the Inwin 909.

But however i do intend to add in a sound card and a PCIE NVME (using an adapter heatsink).

Ytd i was trying the Crosshair, i ran 1 GPU, 1 PCIE cooler adapter on the 2nd slot, and now i intend to add a soundcard soon.

I intend to use the PCIE cooler adapter because of Crosshair does not have a m.2 cooler. Hence i was also considering the Crosshair Extreme which has a heatsink for m.2.

And yes, i'm doing some photo editing/lightroom and some video rendering. So yet again i'm still considering a HEDT platform but 1900x or a R7 with mainstream platform.

Given up on Skylake X due to the heat and crap paste being used. Coming in from 5820k, i think i have enough of intel's heat/power consumption output over the years.

If u buying for looks and bragging rights for the Inwin 909 build, then no stopping u, get the 1950X :D

But from a practical standpoint, do u actually need to upgrade? If u need better performance in lightroom, just get faster NVMe storage and more RAM. If u want better performance in video editing, just get faster NVMe storage for scratch disk. Unless do 3D video animation (e.g. Autodesk Maya), else so many cores also no use (Adobe's performance scaling declines after 10 cores). So u might find staying put in X99 platform a better choice in terms of cost-to-performance.

Edit: swapping out ur 5820k for a second-hand 6850k or 6900k might even be a better choice than upgrading wholesale.

I'm glad Gamer's Nexus covered all aspects of the CPU down to its installation process along with the potentially problematic cooling performance for the typical Asetek AIO coldplate that a lot of major AIO brands are currently using. But it is good to know that the installation bracket is included with the CPU. So there is no need to make a second trip down to distro to collect a compatible AIO bracket.

As seen in the video. The effective range of the cooler is dead centre whereas the CPU dies are located near the outer edges of the CPU coldplate. And to emphasize, it is just a coldplate. Only half of each CPU die is covered with the copper heatsink where liquid is actually running.

If this is the case, then it is either you have to buy an AIO cooler with a bigger coldplate or use custom watercooling which I am sure our TR enthusiasts here will do.

But when it comes to the 1900X vs Ryzen 7, this is where I am somewhat stuck in between. 1900X with its many PCIE lanes will be of use ensuring a lot of overhead that the chances of a lan bottleneck is low but on the other hand, the 1900X cooling performance may be affected resorting a lower chance to Overclock and/or a shorter life span for the die due to the heat generated.
Ryzen 7's AM4 motherboard on the other hand has the advantage of upgradability whereby I can easily replace the CPU with the next iteration which is the APU which hopefully might help with gaming performance a bit.

Would love to hear you guys input on this.

So i dont think a 8 cores thermal output would be any higher than a 12 cores cpu. Just like how cool the 1600/x vs the 1700/x.

So how soon can we expect the local distro to start bring in TR, their mobos and air coolers? I don't really want to risk about having water leak in the system. If there's no news I guess I will take my chance overseas
